The sun, that lights its shining folds,

In anxious silence o'er the sign;
And vainly seek to comprehend
The wonder of the love divine.
Fling out the banner! heathen lands

And nations crowding to be born,

This popular missionary hymn we
owe to one of the greatest of the bi-
shops of the Protestant Episcopal
Church is the . United States, the
Right Reverend George Washington
Doane, A.D., Bishop of New Jersey
front 1832 to 1859. Readers of these
articles tray remember that to an-
other bishop of that branch of the
Church Catholic, Arthur Cleveland
Coxe, Bishop, of New York, we are
indebted' for "`Saviour, sprinkle many
nations," one of the finest of all mis-
sionary hymns, as well as for that
popular carol: "Carol, carol Chris-
tians." Another U.S: Bishop, Phill-
ips Brooks of. Massachusetts wrote
`"O Little Town of Bethlehem,"
Bishop Doane wrote many hymns
which are well known, as for instance,
"Thou are the way, to Thee alone,"
which some people, think stands first
among hymns written in the United
States,' "'Softly, now the light of day,"
"Lord, should we leave Thy hallowed
feet," "To Thee, 0 Lord with dawn-
ing light," "Young and happy while
thou art," etc."
"],fling out the banner," one of ,his
later compositions, was written at his
residence Riverside for the Second
Sunday in Advent, 1848, which was
Missionary Sunday in his diocese that
Year. 7t was taken up quickly by
several of the Protestant denomina-
tions, and wedded to a stirring tune
"Waltham" by Jean l3aptiste Calkin,
became. .as popular for missionary
meeting as "Froin Greenland's icy
mountains," by Bishop Heber, or as
"Saviour sprinkle many nations." No'r
is its use confined to such meetings.
It is often sung as a general hymn
at church services of a revivalistic
tendency and it ha's a special signifi-
cance to British people,; whose nation-
al flag is made up of three forms of the
cross of the Crucified. It would be
au " admirable hymn to be sting at the
unfurling , of our flag over new, nor
newly, settled territory. And well,
would. it be for the race, if all who
live in security ander its protection
always realized their duty to set for-
ward by their lives and words, their
faith in, and love for, "Our only hope,
the Crucified! The "result upon our
young, aspiring Canadian nationality
might be incalculably, for good if this
hymn were sung in every school in
the land, every time the Union Jack
was either used or referred to.
George Washington Doane was
born at Trenton, New Jersey, U.S.A.,
in May 1799. , His higher education
he received at TJnion College, Schen-
eclady, New York. in 1821, while
slightly under the canonical age of
twenty-three, he was on account of
his talents and ability ordained to the
office of Assistant Minister at Trinity
Church, New York city. From
thence' however he was removed three
years later to become a professor at
trinity College, Hartford, Conn. In
1828 while only twenty-nine years old
he became rector of Trinity Church,
Boston, afterwards made famous by
the personality of Phillips Brooks.
His rectorate there was memorable
for under his ministerial guidance the
parish increased greatly in numbers
and in influence.
So . prominent did Mr, Doane be-
come in the church councils, and so
distinguished were his abilities that
in 1832 lie was elected Bishop of New
Jersey. His episcopate was some-
what troubled by 'financial and fac-
tional worries. He . founded .St.
Mary's Hall, Burlington, and Burling-
ton College for young women, the
other for young men, and their in-
stitution and maintenance , pulled
heavily upon his time, patience and
financ?s. There were difficulties a-
bout investments and collections, and
like all other energetic men who do
important things, he, found enemies
to oppose and hinder his work, even
lo bringing him to trial before the
courtswhere he readily obtained ac-
quittal. His eldest son left him for
the Romanists and became a bishop

9HE Ford car fuel system is simple because
-a- it is direct. Gravity flow does away with
forced feed. A short feed line with a mini-
naum of elbows and connections is easy to
service and eliminates approximately 100
parts required by the vacuum tank or fuel
pump system.
The nine gallon tank is so placed that it is well
protected from front or rear end collision.
Any overflow rims off on the ground with
no serious results, since the only point of
possible spark contact is the rear end of the
exhaust. Three screens instead of one, as in
most fuel systems, prevent foreign matter
reaching the tank, A solid steel dash sec.
crates the Ford gas tank from the engine.
The gas guage on the dash of the Ford car is
controlled by, a simple float as shown in
diagram, being more direct, simple and
accurate than any other type. Another
point of driving convenience made possible
by the gravity flow system is the ease with
which the tank may be filled, while the driver
supervises the operation without moving
from behind the wheel.

among them. Another son, however,
became the honored bishop 'of Al,
bany.
Bishop Doane was a poet of much
ability, and his "Works" published in
four volumes,b yhis son the reverend
Bishop of Albany, the year after his
death, had a good curculation and
found a place in most public libraries.
In 1824 the Bishop published a little
volume of poetry entitled "Songs by
the Way," which is now rare and val-
uable financially. It contained sev-
eral of his hymns, and was issued
again and again in enlarged editions,
the last of these that of 1875, (six-
teen
sixteen years after his death) containing
some poems of a private, others of
inferior character which he, himself,
would never have allowed to get in-
to print.
MODERN, REFRIGERATION
a capacity of four cubic feet for food
storage, selling at the lowest price in
Frigidaire history seems destined to
become the most popular model yet
introduced.. Although production has
been increased twice in the past four
weeks, the factories are thousands of
orders behind on this particular mod-
el and the demand is increasing
steadily.
"The average user will put more
things in an electric refrigerator than
she will in an ice box. For this rea-
son we have felt that a cabinet with
a storage compartment of five cubic
feet was the smallest we should build
for general use. But there has been
a long and insistent demand for a
smaller household model, which we
have been forced to supply with a
four .chic foot cabinet. This is a
beautiful unit, equipped with the cold
control, self-sealing ice trays, and
crher exclusive features• which have
helped to make Frigidaire the choice.
cf the majority In refrigerating re-
sults it equals any o€ our highest
priced models."
Two outstanding features of the
month were the marked increase in
sales of household equipment and the
increase in the number of installa-
tions made through power and Iight
companies. Frigidaire Corporation
recently began the policy of slipping
its smaller household units complete-
ly assembled, ready to plug into an
electric outlet. As a result, power
companies are increasing theit retail
sales of the corporation's products.
Although operating at 20 per cent.
above their maximum rated capacity,
plants of the Frigidaire Corporation
are running behind orders, and sales
for the year to date have far exceed-
ed all previous records, according to
E. G, Biechler, president and gener-
al manager,
'April shipments totaled 1,501 cars,
the high mark for one month to date"
he said. "And May indications point
to another peak month. Every 12
seconds of the working day a Frigi-
daire compressor is finished, ready
for shipment,"
As compared with the same month
last year, April shipments showed an
increase of 129 per cent. in house-
hold electric refrigerators, 85 per cent
in compressors and 88 per cent. in
cooling coils for both household and
commercial use.
"The introduction of a new Frigid-
aire at the lowest price in Frigidaire
history and the new Frigidaire Cold
Control by means of which the user
can, obtain any necessary temperature
for dessert making has, we believe,
contributed most to these phenomenal
conditions," said Mr. Bitchier.
"More than 25,000 of these Cold
Control devices have beet ordered as
special equipment for machines in the
field, which is a fair indication' as to
what people best able to judge of the
value of this device actually think of
its particular . advantages. ' It is not
'merely i temperature adjustment for
the food compartment, but it .is pri-
marily a device for controlling freez-
ing speeds in the dessert and ice
trays and is capable of producing
