Recently while looking at some
ready-made dresses I remarked on the
uneven stitching, careless worlernan-
ship 'generally in one of the dresses,
'he sales,•lady;.told .tire quite 'depre
catingly'' that it was a New York
dress. Then she went cn to say. that
they : much preferred buying Caned-
ian di-esses as they were so much bet-
ters nude and were better value for,
the;,eneney. This quite thrilled ine
for, it is not very long ago, since a
clerk would try to impress' you by
telling you in tones of awe that the
dress you were looking at was -a New
York model and would expect you
to fall down and worship it. Canad-
ian manufacturers have certainly
come into then; Own:
A Modern Evil.
One of the- curses, of modern living.
is ` constipation. There are times'
when this is the result of disease but
,-ordinarily faulty elimination is dud.
to laziness or carelessness in some
form, People who are absolutely;
fastidiqus about their person.in every
other respect will allow this condition
to exist: Women who would' throw
us .thea hands in holy horror- at a
clogged sink will make only half
hearted attempts oto clean out their,
own clogged systems.
Sedentary occupations and faulty
diet are the foundation of the evil.`
People form the habit of taking lax-
atives until it is very difficult to res-
tore the natural peristaltic action of
the intestines. Discard the laxatives
and try exercise and diet persistently,
The condition probably did not devel-
op in a day and it cannot; be expected.
to be cured in a day either. That is
where the persistence comes in. It
may not be much fun to keep up the
good work, but neither is it -'much
fun to have the vitality depleted by
auto intoxication.

Exercise Is Necessary.
Exercise is one of the 'rnost necess-
ary things in the cure of constipation.
Any kind of exercise which is not
overdone is good for you, but for,
constipation special , exercises are,
needed. Just to exercise thearms
aid ]egs docs not do much good.
What is needed are the bending and
twisting motions which exercise and
squeeze the abdominal muscles. Tire
old familiar one of touching the toes
with the fingers without bending the
knees is effective- A distinct-improv-
ernent on this is to keep the thumbs
locked and come up bendingfirst to
one side and then 1.0 the next. Get
your exercises out of a book, or make
your own. It is not hard to get those
which bend, twist and squeeze the ab-
dominal muscles. To get resitlts they
must be done each clay and ,twice a
day. is 'even better.

EMPIRE SHOPPING
WEEK IN CANADA
A new high record, even surpassing
the most prosperous war years was
reached in Canada's foreign tradetfor'
the year 1928. Imports were $1,222-
000,000.00 and exports $1,374,000,000.-
00 which .left us a balance of trade
in Canada's favour. of $152,000,000.00:
(Included ,in, this total of exports
were $24,000,000:00 -or re exports).
The total'of Canada's trade for 1928
reached the tremendous figure of $2,-
596,000;000,00 'compared to $2,326,-
000,000.00 for 192.7; an increase of
$270,000,000.00

Use Water Freely.
You -should drink lots of .water each
day. The most important, drinks of
the day are those taken after rising
You need one or two glasses at least,
a half an hour before breakfast.
Many people find this alone suffic-
ient tp regulate them. If you can; to
add lemon or .orange juice to the wa-
ter so much the better.
The Proper Diet.
Constipation, is one of the diseases
which is • greatly influenced, by diet.,
Common sense will tell you the nec-
essary foods, Fruits, 'vegetables and
whole' wheat bread or bran are nec-
essary to provide the minerals and
bulk: 'Use plenty of fresh fruits" and
the dried ones like. prunes and figs.
Eat apples and more apples. Orange
juice in the morning is good but the
whole orange is better as there is
additional cellulose in it. Many peo-
ple finch that an apple or an orange
eaten each night before retiring is
effective. Extra bran may be added
to the diet to provide more rough -
t ge. A` simple way of taking _ bran
is to put it in a half glass of 'water
and stir rapidly. Drink it quickly be-
fore it has time to settle,
Whole grain cereals should be used
at breakfast time. Sometimes it is
very difficult' to get a cereal which
contains the entire grain. You are
snore apt toget it at a flour and
feed store than at the grocers. Bruis-
ed wheat makes a delicious porridge.
'To: sttm., up, drink 'water before
breakfast; eat fruit first thing in the

Without considering the natter
from the point of view that Cen tda

of the British Empire as was .so, prace

quite sufficient; to study it from the
angle of the treatment one would ac-

It is to stimulate trade within the
Empire that Empire Shopping Week
in Canada:is being put over.
The underlying principle on which
the "Empire Shopping •ti'Veek" will'
operate .is that a natural first prefer-
ence be given to goods that are the
product of the country in which the
Week is held, ire this case Canada,
other: Empire products receiving the
next preference. Pranced in Can-

backing Empire' Shopping Week in
Canada which so becomes a great
stational effort:

Canada.

Empire:

Boy Scout Association.

among : the countries of .the world
Canada is fifth in total exports and
third in total turnover of trade.
This huge volume of foreign trade
is clue mainly to three reasons.
1: The rich natural resources of
the country.
2. Thegreat purchasing power of
the population.
3. The, great efforts it is snaking
to increase the external trade of -the
Dominion. :
The -Unitech States is the largest
supplier of comneod ties to Canada,
total imports from that country dur-
ing 1928 amounting to $826,000,000.-
00 ars -increase from 1927 of $119,000,-
000:00 when it was $707,000,000.00
On the other hand exports to. the
United States from Canada for 1928
amounted to $493,000,000.00 compar-
ed to $475,000,000.00 in 1927,an in-
crease of $18,000,000.00
The deficit as it were, or perhaps
i1 is more correct to call it the bal-
ance of trade against .u5 in our deal-
ings with'tlie United Slates last year
amounted to the vast sum of $333,-
000,000. compared to $232,000,000.00
m 1927„
Among a great many Canadians
this situation is causing concern, for
limiting out ability to increase and
catch up with our exports to the
United States we find a strong curb
in the form of an increasingtariff
barrier and it is advocated that more
effort be naacle to purchase our re-
quirements from those countries that
are taking the larger shale of Can-
ada's exports.
When out minds follow this vett',
logical line ofreasoning we find that.
the British Empire ;.is our best ,sus-
tcmcr, ` In 1928 Canada's 'exports to.
the .British .Empire were • $545,000,
000,00 in coparison with $500,000,-
000,00 in 1927 an increase of $45,00%-
000.00 and imports in to Canada from
the rest of the British. Empire were
$254,000,000,00 for 1928 compared to
$240,00Q,000,00 for 1927, an increase
of $14,000,000.00 1eav ig a balance of
trade in our favour of $291,000,000,00
in 1928 and :$260,000,000.00 in 1927.
To sunt up, we now see that with
our best customer the British Empire
we buy less from them to the tune of
$291,000,000.00 than they from us, anti
with our next best customer, the Un-
ited States we allow them to sell us
s333,000,000.00worth of .goods more.
