dHURON PRESBYTERY.
The meeting of' the Huron Pies-
;bytery of the United Church- was held
in the Main Street United, church,
Exeter, on Tuesday of last week, with
a large attendance of delegates. The
following officers were in charge:
Rev. R. H. Barnby, of Myth, chair-
man; Rev. W. A. Bremner, Bruce -
field, chairman of M. and E. fund;
Rev. W. R. Alp, Of Auburn, secre-
tary.
An interesting item of the 'morning
-program was the statistics report by
the secretary, which showed a splen-
-did and encouraging growth in the
church work- for the county. After
the morning session the delegates ad-
jcurned to the basement of the church
where a splendid lunch was served by
the ladies of the church
At the afternoon session Rev. Mrs
'Gilchrist of St. Catharines, on behalf
of Emmanuel College reported the
ere•ngested condition of Victoria Col-
lege, and set forth the imperative
-need of a new theological institution.
An appeal was made to the Presby-
tery for hearty co-operation and a'
committee was appointed to present
the whole question to -every charge in
Huron Presbytery.
Arrangements were made for the
calling of Presbytery at a special ses-
•sion to consider theenew hymn book
and orders for the churchIt was
unanimously agreed to accept the in-
vitation of Auburn United Church
for the next meeting of Presbytery!
There were 100 representatives from
•the thirty-nine charges present. A
•racord attendance showed every char-
ge to be represented by both minister

and layman.

PLAY STARTS MONDAY EVENING NEXT FOR
- ADVANCE -TIMES SORT BALL TROPHY
The Soft Ball season, opens •Mon-
day night, May..13th, when the cele-
brated'Stars will battle with the Unit-
ed church team in the first game of
the schedule. This will be a battle
royal as the United church are out
to win if the captain of the Stars will
only control his roaring howl.
There are six teams in the schedule
this year viz. Foundry, X-RaYed
(Fry & Blackball's), Gunns, Stars,
Lloyd's and the United Church.
• The Executive is putting the dia-
mond in shape for the opening game.
There is a new ruling •this year—
a ford tip is counted out only on the
third strike.
At a meeting of lite Soft Ball As-
sociation on Friday last Mr. A. For-
bes was appointed umpirean-chief.
He appoints the base umpires. Mr.
Forbes certainly understands his job,
and every team is satisfied with his
decisions.
Mayor Fells will pitch the first ball
while A. I. Walker, President of the
Business Men's Association, will be at
the receiving end and the genial
Principal of the High School, Mr.
Brackenbury will be*the first batter.

and Miss Hornfelt, three of the staff
of Wingham High School, are leav-

The subject of this sketch was
born near Stronmess, Orkney Islands,
Scotland, in 1836, and came to Can-
ada with her parents, brothers and
sisters about seventy-five years ago,
In 1862 she was married to the late
William Young who for over thirty
years was Reeve of Colborne town
ship. Mr. Young died in 1896 and
three years afterwards Mrs. Young
moved to Wingham where she has
lived ever since.
Eight of Mrs. Young's nephews
and ,nieces from Goderiche and vicin-
ity were present with her and added
to the enjoyment of her party. Mrs.
Andrew Johnston, Mrs. R. M, Young,
lfr. Alex. Young, Mr. and Mrs. Gor-
don Young, Mr. and Mrs. Alex W.
Young and. Mr. Victor Young.
Mrs. Young is enjoying good health
and is in possession of all her facul-
ties and is an example of industry.
Her guests were surprised to see the
beauty of her needle work, as she
still takes pride in doing things well.
She is a faithful member and attend-
ant of St: Andrew's • Presbyterian
church, Win gham.
Mrs. Young has twelve nieces in
and around Winghann and she enjoy-
ed having all with her on this happy
occasion. '

There passed away on Saturday at
his home on the ate, con. of Col-
borne, one of the piesieers of Huron
County in the person of Col, john
Varcoe. Col. 1/fit:cent tuok part

in Colborne and was very much in-
terested in raising Aberdeen Angus
cattle. He was a member of Smith's
Hill Presbyterian Church and svent

DANCING IN ARMOURIES
TO -NIGHT
The Blue Water Boys will play for
the weekly dance in the Armouries
this (Thursday) evening, under aus-
pices of Wingham Arena. Last week
despite a down -pour of rain, a good
crowd came, and went away very
much pleased with the music the Blue
Water Boys provided. $100 per cm-
ple and extra lady 25 cents. Danc-
ing at 9 o'clock.
Ripley Lad Wills 'Scholarship
Mr. Moorehouse Morgan, of Rip-
ley, a graduate of the University of
Western Ontario, a former student at
Wingham High School, and at pee -
sent carrying on his work at McGill
University, .Montreal, has been a-
warded a fellowship of $1200 in Hon-
or Chemistry research work by the
National research council at Ottawa.
This is the third successive year that
Mr. Morgan has won, the. award in
Chemistry. He expects to continue
his studies at McGill. He is a son
of Mrs. Morgan and the late Levi
