War time c piaster of music with poetic taten in an inspired moment; In its way the Iittle hymn is as per.. feet an outburst of praise as Bishol Ken's' "Praise God from whom al blessings flow," and it is- a wonde that when it first appeared steps wer not. taken to secure the author's nain so that it might be revered by tho; who valued it then, and also by gen eratons still to conte. The sheet was headed, "Hymns of Praise. For Foundling Apprentices, attending Divine Service to :Return Thanks." Three of the other hymns had the author's name, as well as the name of the music to which each of thein was to be sung. This one is merely headed "Hymn, from Psalm CXLVIII,". That Foundling Collection, as it is often called was notable in more than one respect. James Ednteston, an architect of note wrote for it several hymns including: "Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us," sung at royal 'mar- riages, -and "Saviour, breathe an Ev- ening Blessing." "Spirit of mercy, truth and love," and "Great God to Thee our songs we raise" also came from the same book as did tunes es- pecially composed for it. Sonte 'hymn -books wrongfully as- cribe our hymn to . Rey. John hemp tlorne,` Prebendary of , Litchfield, Eng„ who compiled a collection of Psalms in 1810, who however only ex- tracted hymns from the Foundling Collection. Other books credit Bish- op .Mant with its authorship, confus- ing it with the good bishop's hymn ,``Praise the Lord, Whose mighty - wonders." • As hinted previously the words may have been written to fit the tune said to have been composed by one of the world's greatest'musicians, F. J, Hay- dn, an Austrian who lived from 1782 to' 1809 as a national air, after hear- ing. Great Britain's National Anthem finely rendered in'. London. Accord - ng to one authority he was fired with he desire to give his country as size - Praise the Lord! for He is glorious; Never shall His promise fail; God bath made His Saints victorious, Sin and death shall not prevail, Fraise the God of our salvation; Hosts on high His power proclaim; Heav'n and earth, and all creation, Laud and magnify His Nae! There is a mystery about the gen- esis of this hymn which from the pre- • sent appearances never will be solv- ed. Who wrote it, where it came from, we cannot tell. All that is definitely known of its origin is'that in a copy of a 1797 edition of a great- ly valued hymn -book, called "Psalms, Hymns and Anthems: sung in the Chapel of the Hospital for the Main- tenance and Education of Exposed and Deserted Young Children, Lon- don," there is found pasted in at the back a four -paged sheet containing the words of five hymns, includnig 'Praise the Lord, ye heav'ns; adore Him, Music 'by Haydn." Just that; our hymn being set out in four verses of four lines each. There would be nothing' peculiar a- bout that arrangement, had it not been specifically indicated that it was sung to the eight line tune "The Au- strian Hymn," which made it necess- ary to join the verses, two and tto. The title as given, in the masted -in sheet would perhaps indicate that the words were written for Haydh's tune, to which they are always sung. The rhythm,- the lilt of the words fit the music perfectly, and may indicate that r they were composed by a. first rate t r c e F TIMOTHY PLANS FOR .ELECTION To the Editui av all thin.
