the bushman has the humor and the

INSECTS' STRENGTH.
Earwig Draws 5$O Times Its Olen
Weight.
Investigations have been made to
ascertain the strength of insects. By
means of a -toy coach and truck one
student ,tested the pulling power of a
bee. It very ably performed the
tasks that he assigned it, and drew
both the empty coach and the truck.
The truck was gradually; loaded with
plastieine until a weight of one hun-
dred and sixty-six grains lead been
added. The total weight of coach.
truck, and load was six hundred and
one grains. Sines the weight of the
bee itself was exactly two grains; i'
followed that the little creature was
pulling a load slightly more than
three hundred times its own weight.
The inves'i,gator concluded, there-
fore, that the pulling power of a bee
is proportionately thirty times as
great as the pulling power of a horse
or a man even of the greatest
strength.
It appears, however, that even the
extraordinary strength of the bee is
insignificant when compared with the
strength of the insect that was next
tried—namely, the earwig.
The investigator .,is'inclined to be-
lieve that in proportion to its size
the earwig is the most powa.riul of
'all insects.
The earwig in question 'pulled the
empty truck of one hundred and sev-
enty
eventy grains' weight with the utmost
ease; and it also drew the little coach
without difficulty. But when the roof
was placed upon tate' coach the limit
of the earwig's strength was reached,
and it count move only very slowly
and had to make frequent stops for
rest;
The weight of tite covered coach
was ' two hundred and sixty-five
grains, , and that of the earwig . was
only half a grain; so that the insect
was drawing about five hundred and
thirty times its own weight. .Allowing
forthe difference in size, the earwig«
is some fifty-three times as strong as
a horse or a man.

concerning the- British Prime Min-

While travelling in the south of
Prance sotue time ago•, he met a man
with whom he bad been at Cam-

self as "Baldwin."
"Baldwin? Baldwin Let me see,"
the other pondered. Then suddenly
his lace lit up.
"Oh, yes, of course. I remember
you now. Stanley Baldwin, wasn't it?
We used to call you 'On, Stanley, on,'
you know, because you were so ener-
getic. And 1'll bet you have got ori."
Then, seeing a somewhat surprised
look on the face of the Prime Minis-
ter, he added interrogatively:
"But tell me—you don't mind my
