Leave those old ideas at the show-
room door. Come in and see the
car. Then drive it.
Get the feel of the big, smooth six -
cylinder engine, with its GMR cylin-
der -head. Let the car leap forward
at a touch of your toe on the acceler-
ator.ging it to a swift stop with a
gentle pressure of the positive four-
wheel brakes.
And; all the time, experience the easy -
riding comfort of the four Lovejoy
Hydraulic Shock - Absorbers and the
luxury of perfectly -appointed, beauti-

Then -learn Pontiac's amazingly low

WINGHAM ADVANCE -TIMES

June 14th, 08
Father of heaven, Whose love Pro-
found
A ransom for our souls hath. found,
Before Thy Throne we sinners bend,
To us Thy pardoning love extend.
Almighty Son, Incarnate Word,
Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord,
Before Thy Throne we sinners bend,
To us Thy saving grace extend.
Eternal Spirit, by Whose breath
The soul is raised from sin and death,
Before Thy, Throne we sinners bend,.
To us Thy quickening power extend.
Thrice Holy! Father, Spirit, Son;
Mysterious Godhead, Three in One,
Before Thy Throne we sinners bend
Grace, pardon, life to us extend,
Staffordshire, one of the Midland
counties of England, noted for its pot-
teries, its iron works which have made
a `'Black. Country". of :a portion of it,
and its magnificent agricultural stret-
ches, won a famous reputation for it-
self in the realm •of hymnology. Some
of our finest hymns for instance, "The
Church's one. foundation," "Weary of
earth and laden with my sin,'' "Hark,
hark my soul, angelic songs," "My
God, how wonderful thou art," "Sweet
Saviour bless us ere we go," "Father
of heaven whose love profound," and
many .another we owe to writers once
living and working in this county.
Early in the last century it had its
own hymnbooks, several of them, pub-
lished at Uttoxter, Newcastle or Lich-
field. The Rev. Thomas Cotterill of
Cannock, (Staff:) was the best known
of these compilers, and is noted as
being one of the very few "hymn -
menders" •who really improved the
hymns he altered to make them suit-
able for church services, as in "Lor
He conies with clouds descending,"
"Great God what do I see and hear,"
to a certain extent in the three line
version of "Rock of Ages," and in.
Charles Wesley's: "Hail the day that
sees Him rise!"
Another of these Staffordshire com-
pilers was the Rev. Jonathan Stubbs,
of Lttoxeter whopublished a book
entitled: "A Selection of Psalms and
Hymns etc," It a vas in this selection
that our hymn, "Father of heaven,"
litst appeared. Its author was the Rev.
Edward Cooper M.A., an Oxford
graduate and noted scholar. For four
years he was Rector of Hamstall-
Ridware, and from 1809 to 1833 Rec-
tor of Yoxall, both in the same county
of Staffordshire. He was born in 1770
and died, in 1853.
In that same selection another of
Mr. Cooper's hymns once popular now
seldom heard, appeared; "This is the
day the Lord hath blest." Of all the
numerous hymns he wrote, only these
two have survived to our day, chiefly
because of the thousands that, have
been written in the intervening cent-
ury. In 1811 Mr. Cooper published at
Lichfield, his cathedral city "A Sel-
ection of Psalms and Hymns for the
use of his own parish. No great orig-
inality was exercised in naming the
hymnals of..over a hundred years ago
it will be noticed Five out of six of
these books, bore practically the same
title. Our hymn was included in that
book also.
The 1811 "Selection contained only
forty-six psalms and hymns, but it
ran through at least two editions, and
was used in several of the adjoining
parishes, until another '',Selection of
Psalms and Hymns" appeared in 1353
edited by the Rev, C. Kemble which
had a very wide circulation until it in
turn was superseded in 1873 by "The
New Church Hymn Book" compiled
by the same author. These books
both contained our hymn which was
frequently sung to a not very appro-
priate tune called "Cannons" compos-
ed by the renowned Handel, F
Mr. Kemble's book carried our
hymn into general use and from his
time onward nearly every hymnal in
the language contained it. There were
not many hymns dealing directly with
the Holy Trinity, and this one had a.
special appeal to English people, be-
cause it carried on and amplified the
familiar opening .suffrages `of the Lit-
any in the Church of England Book
of Common Prayer.
Mr. Cooper's opening phrase "Fa-
ther of Heaven" proved to be a
stumbling block to many of the com-
pilers, who have printed it as "Father
of•all whose love from heaven," "S'a-
thenof all whose wondrous love,"
1 "Father of all whose wondrous grace"
etc., quite unaware of the real mean-
ing of the author's line, taken straight
from the opening words of the Litany
referred to, The "or there is a pos-
sessive,, the translation of the old Lat-
in de
aleinde coelis, that is .of or belonging to,
residing in; or enthroned in heaven, in
accordance with the Lord's prayer
"Our Father which art in .heaven"
(the "which" being an old English
common gender, not neutral as in
later: use, arid therefore correctly used
of the Lord and Fathcx not only of
mankind but of everything created.)
There is, also as an authority the fine
Old Testament: prayer; "Hear Thou
from heaven Thy dwelling 'place, arid
when Thou hearest forgive." It is not
to the Father,of heaven we sing, but
to "Father, of heaven, heaven being
to put it colloquially the address of
His home where is His throne,
As Mr. Cooper left it the hymn had
four verses as printed above, the dox-
ology forming a fifth verse having
been added by the compilers of
"Hymns Ancient and Modern." Prob-
ably it was the composition of the
gifted editor the Rev. H. M. Baker;
Bart: author of "The King of love my
Shepherd is" and other fine hymns;
The Rev. Dr, Dykes' tune Rivaulx
specially, written for this hymn suits
it admirably, as might be expected'
considering` its makers' undoubted`tal-
ent as a composer of hymn -tunes.
