TRY MIXING SOME REASON
WITH ROMANCE
(By Dr. Louis E. ;13isoh)
All men and women, nb matter how
fine and talented and educated they
may be, have shortcomings, A de-
mure little miss may be catty ,and..
jealous and nagging to the point of
. e`xasperation when her true natttre is
exhibited. A ,perfect gentleinan may
be a fiend when aroused Married,
folk continually complain that their
partners have changed. In reality
they weren't different before. Rom-
ance only made them appear different.

How often,,does love" fully realize
that marriage carries with, it not only
the prospect of closer Companionship
and.the enjoyment of endearment and
caresses; but also responsibilities of
the gravest sort. Clothing, shelter,
food, 'a share,in carrying out the needs
of the children, these invariably fol-
low in the wake of marriage. An.d,this
aftermath of '.the marriage ceremony
is a stern and . often painful awaken-
ing,
Both men and women should learn
to control romantic love tendencies
before'. they marry. If a little reason
were only stirred in with the love
play' there would be fewer marital,
disatsters, Individuals should, enrich•
their experiences with people. They
should study the characters of men
and women, young and. old. They
should"'become thoroughly acquainted
with the traits of their engaged friends
and •then observe what happens after
they marry. Above all everyone should
try to know himself dor herself like a
book. Dissect your own emotional
life. •Behonest with yourself.
_ u
" Catalogue your strength and your
weaknesses. Know what you really
want. Watch your own reactions un-
der diversifed conditions. Learn how
to soften your prejudices. Practice'.
• giving rather than taking. Feel con-
vinced that thorough understanding
and sympathy are valuable assets to
character building. Don't always try
to'have your own way. It is far bet-
ter to co-operate with someone you
love than to "put something over,"
.Piofit by, observations and the lessons
of experience.
Beware of selfishness in either xnan
or woman. Women, especially, like
to be noticed. They enjoy being the
centre of admiring eyes. They crave
fine clothes. All this is perfectly
natural, even commendable—but if
overtone it means Inordinate vanity
and a vain woman will never make a
good, wife. Much more could. be said
• about the p'rbblems of marriage, es-
pecially regarding the relationship of
love itself. I do not say, though, that
love and marriage are incompatible
and invariably form an explosive mix-
ture.

What I claim is that when a person,
is deeply in love --when his instinctive
romantic yearnings are dominating
the emotions—the reason is likely to
go by the board while theindividual
commits error. But, if possible, nev-
er marry without the experience of.
love. Let yourself fall as deeply in
love as you can, Give full swing to
romance. Then wait. Wait until you
emerge sufficiently from the pleasing
drowning sensation' of love to get 'a
perspective. Use your reason before
•you,make a choice of a life's partner.

making the setting of the waves eas-

asier''has no mission in the world, such.
as making the hair glossier or more,-
attractive
oraattractive in, any way. It doesn't
even make the wave stay in longer. It
is simply used for making the wav-
ing easier. Most waving fluids' are
based on the same formula, their col-
or being tate main difference.
FINGER WAVE IS EASY WITH
SIMPLE INSTRUCTION
(By. Josephine Huddleston)
Waving fluid, is not essential to'n'a
good' finger wave if the hair has the
basis for a good wave whether it be
a permanent or natural one.
Finger waving is an outgrowth of
water waving, where the wave was
set in the hair with • combs arranged
in proper sequence to .produce the.
desired effect --a wave which resem-
bled a marcel but to which no iron
was touched. '
Yon realize of course, that- a finger
wave is only possible when one has
naturally curly or permanently curly
hair. Finger waving merely meads
setting a wave in the hair with the
fingers, but I can assure you it is a
far more intricate accomplishment
than mere statement indicates, The
person, giving the finger wave .must
know how to manipulate the fingers
so that the waves go where they are
wanted and that they stay there when
set, This brings tts to waving fluid.
which is' often used
Waving fluid is a'harmiess prepar-
ation, made of ingredients that hold
the hair together flatly. It is some-
thing like the old bandoline that was
used to hold the spit -curls of bygone
days in place, The fluid is applied to
the hair while it is wet and. other than
DYE YOUR OLD (SLIPPERS
Don't discard your soiled white and
light''colbred slippers.' Instead, get a
bottleof liquid black shoe dressing or
one of the numerous harmless black
dyes now on the market, apply to the
shoes and let dry. Presto! New af-
ternoon footgear,
Of course, after a few wearings,
the color may start to fade, but an-
other coat of the liquid is all that; is
necessary to remedy this,
TABLE MATS OF YARN
For•all those who have made hook-
ed rugs of yarn and have bits of the
yarn left over, this idea will be par-
ticularly appealing. You can make
the most amusing table mats of them
which are an excellent protection and
very attractive as welt The tiny bur-
lap squares may be purchased already
stamped or you may get the burlap
and make your own designs.
These mats have been found to be
as satisfactory as the asbestos mats,
and, in fact, often seen better on ac-
count of ‘their thickness in preventing
the heatfrom the dishes from marking.
