THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON
..omromn.._. :., ......
LESSON IX.—MAY 27
'The Wicked Husbandmen” Markle:
1;i2; 13: 1-37.
Golden Text.—Jehovah knoweth tthe
way of the righteous; But the way of
the wicked shall perish.—Ps. z 6.
_THE LESSON, IN ITS SETTING._
Time.—Tuesday, April 4, A. D. 30,
Christ's last day of public teaching.
Place.—The temple in Jerusalem
and the Mount of Olives.
meanings tarnished food for thought
to the most profound minds, "A man
,planted a vineyard," The vineyard re-
presents God's purpose for His peo-
ple, It is what Christ ,ealled the king-
dom of heaven, The "man" of course
is God Himself, the Infinite Planter,
the Maker and Owner of all, "And set
a hedge about it," This hedge . repro-
sents in the parable the many restric-
tions of the Jewish religion, the re-
rluiremetit of circumcision, of many
sacrifices, of ceremonial abl ttions, of
tithes, of the strict observanceof the:
Sabbgth and of the feast days, "And
digged a pit for the winepress. And
built a tower," Here the workmen
were•' sheltered from the storms, and
here they might even live, This fea-
ture of the parable indicates. that God
expected the Jews themselves to do
their part in keeping the nation pure
and strong, while he provided the
'with every advantage for driving
away the foes of the true religion,
"And let it out to husbandmen, and
Went into another country." The hus-
bandmen were tenants who rented the
vineyard on condition that they
should pay the owner each year a
certain proportion of the products.
"And at the season." Let our youth
be such that "at the season" in our
years of maturity, we; may have -a•
rich harvest to' bring to the Owner
of our lives. "He sent to the hus-
bandmen a servant." The "servant"
or slave represents one of God's spe-
cial messengers sent to the Jewish
people to summon them to righteous-
ness and to the 'service of their hea-
venly King, some great leader like
Samuel or Elijah or. Isaiah, "That He
might receive from the husbandmen
the fruits of the vineyard.". Christ's
teaching contained many pleas for
fruits, God is not satisfied with feel-
ings or words or ceremonial obser-
vances, but He wants deeds' of kind-
ness, acts of courage, persevering eff-
orts, souls won for eternity.
"And they took him, and beat him,
and sent him away empty." The Jew-
ish people were not content to ig-
nore the prophets, to send them away
empty, but their uneasy consciences
aroused them to hate God's servants
and persecute them bitterly.
"And again He sent unto them an-
other servant: and him they wound-
ed in the head, and handled shame-
fully." In Matthew's version of the
parable, Matt, 21: 33-46, we are told
of two groups of servants who were
sent, the second company larger than
the first,
"And He sent another; and him
they killed." Wickedness becomes
worse as it is allowed to go unpun-
ished. "And many others; beating
some, and killing some." ,As, after
Pharaoh had harde,ned his heart a -
THE STORY OF THE UNFAITH-.
FUL HUSBANDMEN.
"And He began to speak unto them
in parables." "Parables" is in the
plural, though Mark gives only one;
two others are. given, "the Two Sons"
and "the Marriage of the King's
Son." The stories are different, but
the main point of all three -is the same.
It is, a comparison of one thing with
another, usually of some material
thing or , secular happening with a
spiritual truth. These little stories
were not to be forgotten. Much of
their point could be grasped by the
poorest intellect, while their deeper

'l'he ,Jews knew well what poverty,
peril, and dire wretchedness were in-
volved in this giving of the vineyard
"unto .others."
"Have ye not read even this scrip-
tpre." Did they not understand. "even
this" Bible passage? How then could
they be regarded as fit leaders of the
nation? "The stone which the build-
ers rejected, The same was made the
head of the cornea," Some have
thought that the psalm took its rise
from an actual occtirrence in the
building .of Solomon's Temple, namely
that among the piles of cut stone laid
out and numbered for the great edi-
fice the builders failed to find the one
designed for the 'corner -stone, the
Most important position of all, the en
tire building seating upon it, and that
finally it was found in a disused cor-
ner of the temple area, covered with
refuse, having been thrown away as
worthless, The comparison serves for
all who, though scorned by inen, are
exalted by Jehovah, and best of all
for the Lord Jesus Christ Himself,
who, despised and 'rejected of ,then,
was finally raised far above all princi
palities and powers, and placed beside
His Father on the throne of the uni-
verse.
":1 his was from the Lord, And it is
marvellous in our eyes?" From the
Lord because only He could so re-
verse the judgment of the world.
Marvellous in men's eyes, because
running counter to all worldly ex-
pectations, the greater coming from
the less, the lowly. being preferred
to the proud, the loftiest honor of
history being assigned to a crucified
convict.
"And they sought to lay hold on
Him." In their blind wrath they
would fulfil Christ's prophecy on the
spot. They had Murder in their
hearts. "And they feared the multi-
tude;
ultitude; for they perceived that He
spoke the parable against them."
Christ's parable was clearly direct-
ed against the leaders of the Jews,
but He was so popular with the com-
mon people that these leaders did
not dare seize Him. They must
wait still further, and seek ,to incense
against Him the Roman` authorities,
who alone could condemn Christ to
death. "And they left Him, and went
away." They gave up their immedi-
ate attack, but continued their plott-
ing. It was this same set of cruel and
selfish schemers who finally brought
about Christ's death.
gainst the pleas of Moses, at last Je-
hovah hardened His "heart and fixed
him in his iniquity; so the Jewish peo-
ple, after exercising their violent pas-
sions' against the prophets : of right-
eousness for generations, became es-
tabliizhed in their cruelty and wicked-
Iiess.
"He had yet one, a beloved, Son."
Christ was constantly upheld by the
knowledge that His Father loved
Him (John 3:35; 5:2o) and was watch-
ing over Him with tender solicitude,
whilebat the same time, for the good
of the world, He allowed Him to suf-
fer and would allow Him to die. This
sante blessed consciousness may be
cherished by all Christians. "He sent
Him last unto them, saying, They
will reverence My Son." He had hith-
erto sent only slaves; now He sent
'one far dearer than all His salves.
Who can doubt that these words re-
port for us the mind of God, the plan-
ning and consultation that took place
in heaven before the incarnation of
Jesus Christ?
"But these husbandmen said among
themselves, This is the Heir, come
let us kill Him and the inheritance
shall be ours." It is not easy to see
how the wicked husbandmen expected
'to get possession of the vineyard after
the death of the heir; but the applica-
tion to the case of worldlings is clear,
fox they thing: that, if they can only
stifle. their conscience and silence the
claims of Christ, they can enjoy the
world and the present life without
molestation. How little they realize
the miseries inherited, in wickedness.
"And they took Him, and killed
Him, and cast Him forth out of the
vineyard." They did not even grant
the body a decent burial, but threw
it out of the vineyard where the Son
had been killed, for the dogs ° and
carrion birds to feast upon. Thus
was Naboth crucified outside the walls
of Jerusalem. The Saviour had for
weeks been prophesying to His dis-
ciples that the hatred of His enemies
'
would result in His death, now He
does not hesitate to announce it pub-
licly, though
ub-licly,'though hidden in a parable.
'"What therefore will the Lord of
the vineyard, do?" Christ saw that the
iniquity of the Jews was fiilled full; He
did not speak this parable in order
to turn them from their evil ways,
but to proclaims the penalty that a-
waited them, "He will come and des-
troy the husbandmen,, and will give
the vineyard onto others." In the time
of the exile most of the lntsbaudnien
had been destroyed and the vineyard
had been given for a time to the As-
syrians: Later the land was seized by
the Greeks and,. then by the Romans.

TAKE YE HEED.
Continuing these admonitions in
view of the future, Christ bade His
disciples takeheed to themselves,
be prayerful,be trustful, be firm. They
had a great work to do, nothing less
Phan the winning of the world to
Christ; but that work involved a fierce
contest against sin, the opposition of
rulers, the oppositionof their own
dear ones, the hatred of "all men'',—
that. is, of all the Christians. But they
are .God's elect, God's chosen; they
have God on their side. The Son of
man would come with great pow,'
and. glory..' He would send forth his
messengers, and He would gather His
chosen to Himself. What a triumph
to await! What a consciousness to
support the Christian! What an ally
and what a power available for all
who will lay hold upon 'them!
