"LEISURE AND THE LIPSTICK" GORRIE
Contributed by Rev. D. A, Armstrong
of Wroxeter.
During the pastIfew years we have
gained nrucll, and not the least im-
portant of these gains is that of Lei-
sure.
The Labour Unions of this and all
other countries have agitated and suc-
cessfully secured a shortening of the
hours of labour. .By the use of labour
saving machinery, and thea speeding`
up of .the meansof transportation, se -
vera] hours have been set free each
day.
But unless leisure is connected to
the highest uses it will hereby make
for restlessness, flobbiness and' dis-
contentedness. Leisure is a positive
danger unless it enables those who
enjoy it to acquire a sensible whole-
some ixiterests—Careful and experien-
ced.
Leisure for What?
For more dancing, more card play-
ing, more movies, inore noisy excite-
ent?
• Or for more reading and thinking,
more good music or healthy excer-
Until. we learn the secret of the
right use of leisure we are not likely
to develop fine character or create a
better society.
Unless we have what :Henry Ward
Beecher called "Moral .dynamite and
intellectual electricity" a home of lei-
sure and comfort may be little more
than a fourth tate boarding house,
'An American Bishop said recently,
that "the right use of leisure would
be the most difficult problem the next.
generation -would have to. face."
Recently.I read this statement from
an expert observer, "that the problem
of youth is. very largely the problem
of the money mad father, and the
bridge made mother," Whether that
is - really so or not one cannot say.
But in both Leisure and the 'Lipstick,
there is danger. We have witnessed
in recent days,•colning striking chang-
es 'in the habits of women, one .caai`
think of none more repulsive than•the
use of the lipstick!
The use of :powder and the rouge
by the'rnajority of Women and girls`
is bad, enough, but the habit of smear-
ing and painting the lips with; a lip-
stick is to me, and I think to most
men, :perfectly detestable. It is a
practise that deceives nobody, and in-
deed is not meant deceive. Indeed it
only makes middle aged women look
-:chore haggard, and if the modern girl.
could discover what she looks like
with a blood : red gash where her
mouth ought to be she would never
use a lipstick again.
Restaurant keepers are complain-
ing of red paint, ruarks on the table
'cloths and napkins, and it is said that
a reckless youth who kissed a.modern
young lady at a dance suffered sev-
erely the next day fropainters colic,
Twenty years' ago, if by some un-
fortunate' accident you surprised a
lady in the act of doing something to
her face, she would have shrieked.
Today, in the halls of theatres, in
hotels, in street cars; in trains, in
church, services, she powders her nose,
decoratesher lips, combs her hair,
and!. generally. Spring cleans her fa-
cade.
'Twenty years ago this was the prac-
tise of, a different type of women, to-
day it the calstoni of our virtuous
girls. How long it 1'vi11: prevaail as a
custom:ago one can say. It cannot
pass away too, quickly, at .least so
many people think.

ST. PATRICK'S DAY
Twas. 1928 on St. Patrick's in Lent
The boys on the 6th line to Ed. Pit-
man's went,
To cut him some wood, so he could
keep warm
And be well prepared for a cold win-
ter's storm,
Little Orval E. Taylor • hitched his
team . to the sleigh,
Got Jack Lorimer aboard and started
away;
He stopped at the sideroad for Lewis
and Fred
And also Ab. Coulter and Jack Mas-
on's'Ed.
They kept right along on the . well

Thursday, Manch, 29th, 1928
Till they came to the lame of young
Clarence Rath;
Who said that he guessed he would
have to stay home,
So he missed all the fun by neglecting
tq come,
At McGal'egor's, the boss and Carl Ben-
nett got on,
Then Telford, .Hughie and Harvey
Black's son.;,
Came on board and the homes broke
into a trot,
But stopped at the school house to
take • on Jack Scott,
Then rushed to the, forest at the rear
of Ed's fare,
Where stood Frank Shoebottoni swing-
ing Ills arm;
They eut down the trees as ,fast its
they could
Trimmed the limbs off and sawed in-
to blocks of hardwood,
They peeled off their ,jackets, and
worked pretty good,
And by evening had cut 35 cords of
wood;
So Teddy concluded -they were a good
bunch
And at 6 o'clock. called, "Boys come
and have lunch."
They filled up on sandwiches, cake and
pie too
And washed it well down with :hasty
homebrew;
The meal being finished they danced
a few jigs,
Then went to the barn to see Teddy's
pigs.
They 'were very nice swine, some sev-
en
ewen or six,
But Telford and Lorimer had been
playing tricks,
Only four could- be seen though' they
hunted the pen,
And searched every corner again and
again].
"My word" declared Teddy there were
six pigs in here
That there only is four seems to me
very queer;;
The absentee ,swine made the crowd
very sad ,
But they counted again and got 12
(not so bad.)
he sleigh then was loosened, the hor-
ser hitched on,
The tickets collected and then, they
were ,gone,
After bidding farewell to Teddy. and
Frank, ,
And feeling as rich as if each owned
a bank.
The ;passengers alighted, each at his
own gate,
And tried to reach home before very
late,
And vowing if TeddY would fur111s11

not the time,
To tell you the ins and outs and make
