BLUE VALE
The Ladies' AM and W.M.S. of
Knox Presbyterian church held their
regular monthly meetings at the home
of Mrs,. Alex. Moffatt on Thursday,
October 6th. The president of the
W.M.S., Mrs, C. H. Garniss, presided.
The meeting was opened by the sing-
ing of hymn 449. The Scripture,read-
ing taken from John 3:1-21, was read
by Miss Olive Scott, followed by
prayer by Mrs. Peter McDougal. Af-
ter the regular business and singing
hymn 419, • Mrs. P. S. McEwen read
a splendid paper on "The Growth of
the W.M.S, in the Maritime Provinc-
es," organized, for fifty years, show-
ing clearly that the W.M.S. has had
fifty years of prayer, fifty years of
proving, and fifty years of progress.
•After singing hymn 437 the president
closed the Meeting with prayer.
A WINNING POLICY
Great successes are rarely founded
on luck. This is as true of newspa-
pers as individuals. The , policy of
The Family Herald and ;Weekly Star
of Montreal, since its first issue, about
6o years ago, has been to go on im-
proving each issue from 'Week to
week, and give its reader's the best
value that brains and money could
produce. -That policy has certainly
succeeded. Today The Family Herald
and Weekly Star has over one mihion
readers, certainly something to boast
about in Canada. It stuck to its pol-
icy and won the race on merit. Its
readers stuck to it year after year,
proving that a good thing is apprec-
iated. At one dollar a year for that
big weekly of 72 pages no home in
Canada can afford to be without it,
Mr, and Mrs. Garfield Van Stone
announce the engagement of their
niece, Miss- Edna Helena Tainlyn,
only ,daughter of the laic, Dr, H. E.
W. Tainlyn and 'Mrs. Tamlyn, of
Wingham, Ontario, to,Mr. Edward C.
Williams, of Hanover, Ontario. Mar-
riage to take place quietly in October.
FIRES COST $34,000 PER DAY
There were 1o,Soo fires in Ontario
last year, resulting in a loss of $12,-
482,993. The fire waste of Ontario
exceeds $34,000 a clay, or in other
wolds, we contributed $4 per 'capita
to this huge bonfire of property.
The Fire Marshal says that the
great majority of these fires were
caused through carelessness and fully
eighty per cent, were preventable. it
is not an uncommon sight nowadays
to see the countryside lighted up with
flames leaping from the roof of some
well-filled barn. People gather help-
lessly about while the frame work is
gradually consumed and, the whole
structure totters, breaks down bit by
crashes into a heap of burning ruins.
bit in blazing embers, and gradually
Are these fires caused by careless-
ness? Nit always! Are such fires
preventable? We do not know.
Frmers, as a rule, are careful
about fire, for they knew ho W futile
are the fire -fighting equipment and
organization of the rural districts.
The fires caused by spontaneous com-
bustion are so mysterious that one
can hardly say they are caused by
carelessness or are preventable. There
are farmers, however, who even yet
fail to realize that they are tempting
the demon fire when they leave oily
rags and waste piled in corners of the
shed or barn, and we have watched
with amazement others nonchalantly
smoking their pipe while they forked
hay into the mangers or bedded dawn
the live stock with straw and chaff
as dry as tinder.
'Whether innocent or guilty we all
help 'to pay for the enormous waste
of property, Insurance premiums are
included in the cost of everything We
tuy, and as the „fire hazards grow
so does the cost 'of insurance on ;all
the goods, from shoestrings to bind-
ers, that are purchased for daily or
seasonal use.
Efficient fire -fighting equipment is
a great help, but care and prevention
are more powerful forces in the con-
trol of fire, It is for this reason that
a Fire Prevention Week is proclaimed
each year and men, women and chil-
dren are enjoined to gumd against
the needless destruction of property.
