Bender of Blyth, President .Seaforth, June 23. -The county was well represented at•_the Meeting of• the I-lurolt County social service council convention held, in Northside United Church on Wednesday, over a Hundred delegates being present. The afternoon meeting opened at 2 o'clock with Mr, E. Bender, of Blyth, in the chair. Dr: Irwin, the newly ap- painted secretary of the Ontario Pro- hibition Union, was the first speak- er. The character ($f the liquor bus- iness, he said, had,, been exposed as never before through the customs in- vestigations which were a very se- vere indictment of the traffic. Mr. Lane framed a total ab- stinence pledge which every member grf his official .board, signed as well as the majority of his congregation: and which they commend to other congre- gations and which solves the problem of Government control and every ,thing else. "I de- clare myself a believer, in total ab- stinence' and purpose with God's help to abstain from the use of all intox- icating:liquor as ,a beverage. Further- more, I will earnestly ,endeavor to lead others to see the wisdom of tak- ing a similar position." Mrs, Beavers drew attention to the fact that ,an. the province thosewho liad signed the, pledge in their early ,d,ays are the present • temperance workers, It was resolved that the ap- preciation of this convention be pre- sented . to the members of- the Fed- eral and Provincial Houses, Thomas McMillan and W.
