REAFFIRM STAND ON
TEMPERANCE
Huron Social Service Workers Elect
E. Bender of Blyth, President
.Seaforth, June 23. -The county was
well represented at•_the Meeting of•
the I-lurolt County social service
council convention held, in Northside
United Church on Wednesday, over
a Hundred delegates being present.
The afternoon meeting opened at 2
o'clock with Mr, E. Bender, of Blyth,
in the chair. Dr: Irwin, the newly ap-
painted secretary of the Ontario Pro-
hibition Union, was the first speak-
er. The character ($f the liquor bus-
iness, he said, had,, been exposed as
never before through the customs in-
vestigations which were a very se-
vere indictment of the traffic. The
present conflict centres more around
moderate drinking. °He hopled to see
a large degree of activity. in our:edu-
cational methods. "In; our educative
program, we should make the danger
of alcohol stand out everywhere and
bring the knowledge of the ordinary
',up to are scientific Standard of the
present day. From a scientific point
of view a very strong, almostcom-
pelling, argument could be put up
against indulgence in alcoholic li•
-
guors.
It was moved by Rev. Mr, McTav-
ish and seconded by Mrs. l3eavers
that this convention express its
hearty appreciation of -Dr. Irwin's- ad-
dress which was very sane' and sen-
sible and the high service to which he
has been. called.
The following committees were ap-
pointed: Nominating committee: E.
Bencler and W. g. Willis, of ,Wing
ham; P. A. McArthur and Mrs. A.
McGuire, of, Brussels; Mrs: 13. W. S.
Beavers, of Exeter.
Resolution. committee: Rev. W. J.
Mains, of Walton; A, B. Carr, of.
Blyth; Mrs'. R. Strachan, of Brussels;
A. T. Cooper, of Clinton; A. 'Bailie,
of Goderich; W. T. Fellow, of God
erich..
The pastor, Rev. W. 15. Lane,
pointed out that total abstinence is
the onlysafe attitude towards intox-
icating liquor. Every total abstainer
helps to -kill the liquor traffic. ,Every .,
man°who' is not helps to keep it alive.
Every man who is nota total ab-
stainer helps to make the highway
unsafe.' Mr. Lane framed a total ab-
stinence pledge which every member
grf his official .board, signed as well as
the majority of his congregation: and
which they commend to other congre-
gations and which solves the problem
of Government control and every
,thing else. The pledge so commended
itself to the convention that a .reso-
lution was passed that this plan 'be
recommended to the ministers
thratughout the country and that this
plan{ be adopted, • •
The pledge is as follows:. "I de-
clare myself a believer, in total ab-
stinence' and purpose with God's help
to abstain from the use of all intox-
icating:liquor as ,a beverage. Further-
more, I will earnestly ,endeavor to
lead others to see the wisdom of tak-
ing a similar position."
Mrs, Beavers drew attention to the
fact that ,an. the province thosewho
liad signed the, pledge in their early
,d,ays are the present • temperance
workers, It was resolved that the ap-
preciation of this convention be pre-
sented . to the members of- the Fed-
eral and Provincial Houses, Thomas
McMillan and W. J. Medd, both of
whom are pledged to temperance;, al-
so of the service rendered by Inspect
•or Fellow. One of the speakers hoped
that in four years after experimeit'
and, experience the people of Ontar-
io would have prohibition fort their
true sentiment.
A. delicious luncheon was served by
the Ladies', Aid Society of the North-
side church; Interesting after-dinner
speeches were made by Rev. W. P.
Lane, Messrs. Bricker, McArthur, •J.,
McNay, Mr. Stanley, of Lucan, Rev..
Mr. McTavish and W. J. Medd,
M.P.P.; interspersed with' community
singing led, by Rev. and Mrs, W.
Barker, of Walton.

the hyrn'n "Fight the Good Fight,"

a3th chapter' of Romans. Tire' pastor

of welcome to the - delegates. Mrs..

Mr Stat ley, of Lucan, gave a forc-
ible' address. Preferring to GOvcrn-
rn,ent Contr1 he said that although
the Temperance people had no faith
in it they would, not be the ones to
break the law. He believed that when
the record of last year. is N+ritten that
it with not be a defeat for the tern -
perm -ice eatt$e. The forces that the
temperance people have tofight in
the future are the brewers and dis-
tillers who have put their' hand to
every act of government legislation.
Beer by the glass is where the fight
stands now.
In closing Mr. Stanley made a plea
for Sabbath observance; "The young
people are much the same now as
they ever were. They need compan-
ionship
r
and lehldership, They ake

are snaking 'them,
