SHOULD BE CARED FOR (T1ie'Wat:erford Star) As this is the year of the celebra= tioll of Canada's Diamond Jubilee and; as ineetings are taking place, and committees being formed, while many others are giving their opinions as ,to: the best method of celebratipn I thought it would not be imposing too much upon the public to give my hum- ble opinion. In an article in the Advertiser quite a number gave their views, Some of these I was heartily in accord with, and especially with what. Tom Moore, President' of the Trades and Labor Congress, said in 'his address. He said that the emphasis should ' be placed on the pioneer developrxiient of the country. This brings to my mind one `very essential matter that should receive consideration from many township 'councils in Ontario, and that is the neglected and dilapidated rural grave yards. In last week's .Star, it states that a Bill is now on its way through the. Ontario' Legislature, giving all ceme- tery Boards in townships authority to assess plot holders for the upkeep 'of the cemetery. Thismay be all right in some places, but in many others, where the tombstone date 'back 70 or So years, th,e people in the community know little or nothing a- bout the dead, and many even care less. This is not as it should be. I am sure we must all agree with the poet when he said: "Perhaps in this'neglected spot. is laid, Some heart once pregnant with celes- tial fire, ! `Hands that the rod of empire -might -have swayed ' Or waked to ectasy the Airing lyre." 'These neglected cemeteries are an eye sore to many community , espec- ially as many of them are situated close to school houses. In the -early days the church and school.co-operat ed more closely than they do now in the promotion of religious education. Most of the small churches that grac- ed, out' rural ethimu pities in the pion eer days have disappeared and the church 'yards are no k5tiger used as burying planes, as no onedesires to. see,his relatives or friends laid ill the most neglected spots of Ontario. As a teacher I would" like' to see something done to put those yards in proper shape so as to show a little respect to the pioneers who sacrificed so much in coming to this country and laying., the, foundation of our beautiful and prosperous province. In one school I taught in, there was a centete`ry just a few rods from the school and during the four and a half years 1 spent in that section not oti8 'thing was Clone to improve the unsight- ly appearance of the ground. In my present school there is a grave yard just' across the road ,and conditions are even worse, as the yard is not fenced, and most of the tombstone are lying flat on the ground, Some broken, and others cover with grass and rubbish. One great lesson we teachers should endeavour to impress upon our pupils is beauty, We should try and have good models or ideals kept constantly before our pupils so that the pictures will' grow up with the child, and make an indelible impression on' the mind. I feel it is impossible to teach beauty in its highest aspect as long as we have such unsightly scenes kept daily before the pupils. It inay. be possible to have .these. grave yards cleaned attd each memor- ial ,erected at its ;proper place, but it would be quite easy to erect a mound in the centre of 'the yard, and have all the tombstones placed in some kind 'of symmetrical form, so that the yard could be cultivated and planted with trees honor s in 1 and memory x n y of our early pioneers. Many of the in- scriptions ,:on the stones referred to, date prior to 1867, the year of 'Con- federatior, and so I consider are wor- thy, of any little honor we can show (then) the dead. In every commun- ity aun-ity many public spirited. nen and women wise found who will take hold of a matter of this lcind; and give vain - able le ab1e assistance to councils cxls in making theseyards parks `ds attractive , or -beau- . ty spots, and no time is more oppor- tune tune Char the pnese t, when cantit- tees are being formed to make this' Diamond jubilees success; , e Editor I'ltop Mr, rr I have not en croached too rnueh upon your valu- able space; It.
