Jaist recently the perplexing prob-
lem of whether the tomato is a veg-
etable or a fruit was settled for the
Minneapolic office of the Internal
Revenue Bureau of the United' Stat-
es. According to a ruling emanating-
from
manatingfrom the govertunoiit headquarters at
Washington, the tomato is a vege-
table, and just because it is a vege-
table and not a fruit, its Pike goes,
tax free, a United Statestax of two
cents a a'allo•n being imposed on
drinks made froth fruit,
The tomato is mentioned in North
American records as early as 17814
but it is not until well on in the 19th
century that it came into popularity.
at this date an extension of time till
Feb. 1st next, was given the Collect-

ce of taxes 'remaining unpaid. After
the passing of a large number of ac-
counts which, will appear in the fin-
ancial statement and prior to ad-
journment a vote of thanks accom-
panied by some complimentary re-
marks were paid to the Reeve from
the members of Council for the cap-
able manner inwhich the business
had been conducted, during the year,
and which was fittingly replied to by
that official.
