There's a wideness in God's mercy,
Like the 'wideness of the sea;
There's a: kindnessin His justice,
Which more than liberty.
There is nb place wwhere earth's sor-
rows
Are more felt than up in heaven;
There is no place where earth's fail-
ings
Have such kindly judgment given.
There is plentiful redemption
In the Blood that has been shed;
There is joy for all the members
In the sorrows of the Head.
For the love of God is broader
Than the measures of man's maid;
And the heart of the Eternal
is most wonderfully kind.
Pining souls! come nearer Jesus,
And Oh! creme not doubting thus,
But with faith that trusts more
bravely
His great tenderness for us.
If our love were but more simple,
We should take Hina at His word;
And our lives would be all sunshine
In the sweetness of our Lord.
This .hymn is really a cento, or a
contracted version of Dr. Faber's
hymn, evhich appeared in his. "Ora-
tory Hymns;" published in 1554, in
eight verses, the first two of which
were as follows:—
'Souls of arenl why will ye scatter
Like a crowdof frighten'd sheep:
Foolish heartsl why will ye wander
Froth. a love so true and deep?
Was there ever kindest shepherd
Half so gentle, half so sweet,
As the Saviour Who would have us
Conte and gather round His feet:"
Another cento begins with "\Vas
there ever kindest shepherd." Both
are found in many hymnbooks, and
enjoy considerable popularity,
The verse beginning, "For the love
of God is broader," is one of the most
charming and sweetest ever written,
in the estimation of the writer of
these articles, and the last one is al-
most, if no quite, equal to it. The
tender: manly sympathy of the whole
hymn is, in fact, exquisite, and had
it found fitting musical -expression it
would lone ago have been considered
entitled to rank .among the ten most

nothing is more truly Catholic than

considering is capable of being- sung
