There was an unusual 'spell' of wea
tiler iii February. The sun was s
hot, that the perennials started perk
iug up. There must have been at leas
a dozen plants, :that were quite greet
and flourishing, Since that' thne ther
has been several falls of snore, s
whether the plants will -survive of no
remains to be seen. The English Vio
lets had a surprising amount o
growth, There is an edging plant ii
the garden that is nameless, It wa
given to me by a neighbour, who 1
one of those sort of gardeners, wn
has a beautiful garden, but does no
know the names of half the plants hegrows. It always makes ane uncom-
fortable to have a plant T cannot
name like meeting someone whose
face you know and yet cannot name
them. Sotne day I hope T will find
out what it is, as it is such a pleasant
little plant. It is green from the time
the snow goes, has several shades of,
green in its foliage, does fade some-
what. Lastly it spreads, not riotously,
but just enough. , Altogether it is a
very 'satisfactory covering plant.,
Perennial Gardens
A Perennial garden is a joy.. Each
spring the plants come up one by
one, as old friends' to greet you. Some
poli up very early and perhaps they
are the most welcome. Others take
their own good time, until you almost
despair of them. The ' Chinese .Lan-
tern Plant is one of these, but at last
it starts to grow; and is._ even more.
welcome after a little anxiety over its
delayed appearance. One must pos-
sess one's soul in patience, when you
hays a Perennial Garden, because if
you go digging about, too soon, you
may destroy some of the precious
plants,
If you have grown Annuals, and
then start to grow Perennials, you
will be delighted with the length of
the blooming season. Months before
you are accustomed to having bloom,
you will have flowers in your garden,
and with judicious planting, .you can
have bloom until the snow comes.'
Chrysanthemums are about the latest
flowers to bloom, and for that rea-
son should be included. 1 have seen
Sweet Alyssum to bloom after the
first fall of snow. Last summer even
the Alyssum had quit blooming
through neglect. However the rains

Garden Gossip
This is being written in March be-
fore it is possible to get into the gar -
•den, and each day' of sunshine makes
Inc long -.-to feel the earth between
my fingers' once again. Any gardner
knows the feeling! Our garden is a
Perennial one, and I a n.full of cur-
iosity to know just what it will be
like this year. Last suninier, we were
away two months, leavinga nian to
keep the place weeded. He did not
show up once, so when we returned;
the garden was chocked with weeds:
It was such a dry suni.nier, that the
few plants, which could be seen above
the weeds, were wilted and forlorn.
Some of them will not survive, 1_ am'
sure, What a•crop of weeds there will
be this year, as judging from appear-
ances all the weeds bloomed and scat -
t cannot be changed: This is a great
mistake. . Lel you; spirit, of. Adven-
ture have its chance, inthe limits of
your garden. Move your plants
around, and try them in ,sit
-
nations in your garden, and. in close
combination with other plants. Eithe-
er 'by design or .nuance, you may hit
upon some delihtfuI color combina-
tion. Last year I planted in a right:-

clump of Hollyhocks in stades of pink

Foxglove. It wastoo soon to look

titins, one must have the same seas-
on of bloom andsome relation as to
height, Shasta Daisies and Coreopsis
make a good combination. Pinks and,
Forget-me-not planted so closely that
they intermingle' are very lovely. Col-
ored flowers appeal to the much more
than white ones, but to have an ef-
fective garden you rust have an ab-
undance of white flowers, as they add
to the interest and color of all the
other flowers.
Perennial plants should never be
planted in straight rows. If there is
room, they are best planted in clumps
of at least 3 to 5 plants. Planted in
this way, there are bays of shade and'
shadowandare much more beautiful,
than. when planted in .the mathemati-
cal precision of stiff straight rows.
Shrubs
Shrubs and Perennials make a nat-
ural alliance and. are a very pleasant
form of gardening for the lazy gard-
ener, who does not want his or her
garden - to take too much time or
work. ',Ve are accustomed to having
flowering shrubs in the Spring, but
many people do not realize that one
may have perpetual bloom, through-
out the season, by proper planting
of flowering shrubs. If there is room
in the perennial garden; they make
a splendid background, but they are
equally' lovely as specimen plants
planted singly.
The 1930 ca't'alogue of the \Vm.
Rennie Co. is a specially attractive
one, as it has so many colored illus-
trations. They give illustrations of
20 flowering shrubs, and this is a help
in planning your planting, or as an
aid in identifying the shrubs which
you see in other gardens. Many peo-
ple propogate their own shrubs. This
take time, but somehow the years
roll around quickly, in garden grow-
ing and developing.
Generous Gardeners
Last of all, do not be a stingy gar-
dener. Our gardens are like our lives
—we get out of them, just what we
put in. If we give of ourselves or of
our gardens' then our lives are that
mulch richer:
