An interesting meeting of the Wo- men's Missionary Society of Gorrie United Church, was held in the school room on October 3rd, with fifteen membersand two visitors present, Mrs. Hamilton, who presided, op- ened the meeting with prayer, We sang hymn "0 God, our help in ages past" and Mrs. Ramage led in pray- er. Mrs. Cooke read a passage of the book "The Kingdom in. Everyday Life." Hymn "Colne, ye thankful people, come" was followed by a "prayer of thanksgiving" led by Mrs, Hamilton. The paper, giving an ac- count of the increase of teachers, pet pils and interest taken in Kindergart- en work in Japan in the past twenty- five years, was taken by Mrs. Hamil- ton. Mrs. Carson read a paper on "Japan," Mrs. H. E. Ashton, in giving a her- ald on Africa, read an account of the arrival of Rev. Merle Ferguson and bride, who went to Africa as mission- aries in November, 1934, stating their impressions 'of that continent and the royal welcome extended to them by fellow -missionaries and natives. Mrs. Wylie gave the herald for India. Mrs. Whitfield .gave a splendid outline of the history of the W. M. S. of the Gorrie United Church since its organ- ization fifty years ago, telling of the changes of officers, of the different :plans of carrying on the mission work and off the interest manifested throughout the half century. A poeni, "A Thanksgiving Prayer" was read by Mrs, R. Ashton. Mrs. Ramage then took charge for the business session when .items of business were discuss- ed regarding our Golden Jubilee on Oct. 17th. Miss Edith Sparling, of Korea, will bethe missionary for special prayer during the month. Mrs. Ramage closed the meeting with prayer. GORRIE Sunday, Oct, 13th, is Gorrie Pres byterian Anniversary. Rev. Hanna, of Toronto, is to be the special speaker. Mrs. S. G. Kaine is getting nicely settled in her new home on Main st. Already the outside of this lonely res- . idence has taken on a new aspect. Miss Marie MacMillan, of Listowel, spent the week -end with her grand- parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. Magrath. Mr. and Mrs. Erskine and daughter, Miss Eleanore, also little neice, all of Atwood, spent Saturday at the Rec- tory. Dr, and Mrs, C. C. Ramage and son, Jim, spent a couple of days in London this week. They were ac- companied by Mrs. MacKenzie, Mit- chell. The Deanery meeting of this Dean- ery will be held in St. Stephen's An- glican Church here on Oct. 30th: Mr. and Mrs. Austin Hawthorne and daughter, of Listowel, were Sun- day visitors of Mr. : and Mrs, H. Johnston will be glad to learn he ars rived home on Monday from London, and is recovering nicely front his re- cent operation. He spent a short time with his son, Rev, ,Stanley Johnston, Adowa. Golden Jubilee W. M. S. An historic day .in the life of the Women's Missionary Society of Gor- rie United Church will be marked on Oct. 17th when the Golden Jubilee will be celebrated. A supper and splendid progratn will be given. Meeting On Tuesday evening.of last week the young people of St. James' Church met in the Sunday School room and enjoyed a social evening, and re -organized their A.Y,P,A. The rector, Rev. A. H. O'Neil, occupied the chair for the election of officers which resulted in the following mem- bers being appointed as the executive; President, Miss Margaret Davey; Vice Pres., Miss Marjory I'auliti; Sec- retary, Miss Lily Waller, and reas- urer, Mr. Robt, Paulin, Contests and games were enjoyed, and after lunch was served the meeting closed with prayer by the rector. The many friends of Mr. Allan Mc- Tavish, of Lucknow, formerly of 4th line, Turnberry, will regret to know that he suffered a paralytic stroke one day last week. Mr. McTavish was as- sisting at a threshing and had gone to a creek for a tank of water. He was seen to stumble and fall, when men arrived he was found.. in a help- less condition. Old friends in this community hope for a speedy recov- ery. ecovery. Miss Bessie Lovell Passes Word came to Mrs. W. S. McBer - cher by air -mail on Thursday, .telling of the death' on Sept. 10th, after a. brief illness, .of her sister, Miss Bes- sie Lovell, who has for many years labored as a missionary in Central Af- rica, and only returned to Africa after a furlough in April. The many friends. of Miss Lovell will deeply regret the death of one whom they knew so well and who has given so many faithfu. years of service in the foreign field:. Rev_ Mr. Grant chose for his text, Timothy IL: 4;13 "The cloak that I left at Troas with Corpus, when thou contest bring with thee and the books but especially the parchments". Mr. Grant showed the necessity of reading Bi- ography, History, Fiction, Magazines and most of all, the Bible. The spec-. ial hymns for the day were "0 Word: of God Incarnate", "I think when I read that sweet story", "Shine upon us, Lord", "Break thou the Bread of Life", and the Choir contributed.. a fine anthem "Cast thy bread upon the waters." Forest, has op- ened a jewelry and watch repair busi- ness in this village. We welcome Mr. Deverell and wish him every success. Four in Motor Accident Four of our local young people, Messrs. Elgin Huffman and Wesley Paulin and Misses Mabel Patterson and Ila Sharpin, were victims of a motor accident which occurred Sun- day evening when the car, owned by the former, in which they were rid- ing, turned over in the ditch a few miles east of Fordwich corner, Luck- ily for the occupants, they escaped with minor cuts and bruises, but the car was badly damaged. The Ladies' Guild of the Anglican Church, are holding their regluar monthly meeting and quilting Wed- nesday of this week at the home of Miss Alma Saunders, SALEM Mrs. John Gowdy spent one day last week with friends in Kitchener.
