home of the former's daughter, Mrs.

Word was received here last week
of the death of Margaret Jane Tiffin,
on August 24, at Wilkie, Sask,, widow
of the late Mr. Hetherington and'i,
daugtiter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jos.
Tiffin of Langside, and sister of Mr.
Jos. Tiffin in the village. She leaves
to, mourn her a grown-up family of
six children.
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Isaac and
daughter of .Brantford ,and Mr. and
Mrs. W. Hawthorne of Brantford,
visited on Sunday at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Jos, Holmes.
Mr .and Mrs. George Garton and
Oliye,..George and John, spent Sun-
day at Kitchener,.with their daughter,
Mrs, Arthtir Holland.

The 80th birthday anniversary cif
William Thom of Gresham was cele-
brated at a surprise dinner in his
honor at Jack West's El Porvenir
on 'the base line road Saturday eve-
ning, July 20. It was a family gather-
ing, planned entirely without Mr.
Thorn's knowledge.
Present were Mrs. William Thom
and Bill and Mr. and Mrs, Charles
Taber and family of Gresham, Dr.
J. W. Thorn -,and family and Mrs.
Potter of Bend, 'E. P. Thom and
family and Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Thom
of Portla'1•rd, and H. A. Thom and
family from Longview, Wash,
A very pleasant family gathering
was held at the home of Mr, and Mrs.
Nathaniel Bolt of Marnock on Sun-
day, when Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sage
and two daughters, Mrs, Lippe ; and
Miss Olive and also Mr. and Mrs.
Chas. Sage and baby daughter, Bev-
erly motored from Rochester, New
York, and spent the week -end here. It
is twenty-three years' since the two
sisters, Mrs. Sage and Mrs. Bolt have
been together here. Among others
who were present -were, Mr. and Mrs.
G. Moore and family of Rockwood,
Mr. and Mrs. Alf. Mitchell of Wing -
ham and Mr. and Mrs. John Pardon
and family of Whitechurch.
Mr .and Mrs. Jack Sherriff and Mr.
and Mrs. Milton Sherriff of Hamilton
spent Sunday last with their uncle,
Mr. W. R, Farrier.
Miss Agnes Wilson, R.N., of Strat-
ford, is visiting at the home of her
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Wilson.
Quite a number from here attended
the funeral of Mrs. Donald MacDon-
ald,. of Langsi'de on Tuesday. Mrs.
MacDonald has been ill for a good
many years.
Mrs. Williams Sr. and Mr. and Mrs.
Bert Williams, of Illinois, and Miss
Jean Williams, of Dungannon, spent
Monday at the home o,i; Mr. and Mrs.
Thos, Moore.
Mrs. Reuben Tiffin and Charlie and
Mrs. Victor Emerson, also Mrs. Du-
ckering and daughter, Annie, who
have been visiting with Mrs. Emerson
for the past two weeks, motored to
the latter's home at Drayton on Sun-
day.
Miss Phronie MacDonald of Tees-
water and Miss Belle McArthur and
Mr. Lester Streeter of Paisley are
visiting this week at the home of Mrs,
Murray.
Mrs. Ab. McQuillan spent Sunday
last with Mr. and Mrs. McCluskey of
Guelph.

Presbyterian W. M. S. Met
Mrs. 5. R. Greig presided over a
well attended meeting of the W. M.
S. of Knox Presbyterian Church, held
at the home of IVirs. Archie Messer
on Thursday afternoon. Following the
regular opening period and discussion
on a few items of business, Mrs.
Harvey Robertson read the study
chapter, giving a graphic account of
"A Day's Visit in Formosa."
Mrs. Greig was appointed superin-
tendent of the Mission Band, filling
the office made vacant by the removal
of Mrs. D, 3, Falconer.
The President closed the meeting
with prayer.
Ladies' Aid Had Encouraging report
The 3rd. quarterly meeting of the
Ladies' Aid of Knox Presbyterian
Church, was held on Thursday after-
noon at the home of Mrs. Archie
Messer with the President, Mrs. Alex.
Mowbray in charge.
Encouraging reports were received
from the four groups showing 'the
financial result of the activities of the
society, Following the business meet-
ing the ladies were invited to the din-
ing -room, where tastefully arranged
tables were laid and the ladies of the
East Boundary group served a Mystic
Tea; Solving the menu was interest-
ing and difficult, and when served was
most delicious.
Frank Stamper has purchased the
house and property belonging to the
John Hutton estate, getting possess-
ion at once.'
The Y, P. S. of the Presbyterian
Church presented; the play "The Col-
onel's Maid" at Jamestown on Friday
night.
'The regular'horithly meeting' of the
Mis'sioit • Band of the` 'United Church
was held on Sunday afternoon in the

Institute To Meet September 17
The regular meeting of ` the Bel-
grave Women's Institute will be held
on Tuesday afternoon, September 17
at the home of Mrs. J. M. Coultes.
Mrs. 'Jas. Taylor will be in charge of
the topic and Mrs, S. Procter will
lead in the current events discussion.
Mrs. W. Pocock will have charge of
the Motto. Music by Sara Cole.

Miss Irene Jefferson has returned
from a holiday at Port Stanley.
Mrs. Ted Mills of Toronto, was a
Sunday visitor with Mr. and Mrs.
Norman Thompson.
The Women's Institute met last
Wednesday at the home of Mrs. R,
Chamney, the meeting was in charge
of the President, Mrs. Bert Thomp-
son. Delegates were appointed to the
Annual Convention at Goderich. The
paper was given by Mrs. Jas. Craig,
Miss B. Boyle gave a reading entitled
"The Unusual Visitor" and instrumen-
tal and vocal music was given by Mrs.
Ernie Doerr and. Miss Edith Stoltz of
Auburn.
The W. M. S. of Donnybrook are
invited to Crewe on Thursday after-
noon of the week to join with them
in their meeting. Miss Maude Howell
missionary on furlough from Trinidad
will be the guest speaker. The reg-
ular meeting of Donnybrook W.M.S.
will be held the following Thursday
Sept. 19, at the home of Mrs. Bert
Taylor,
Donnybrook School re -opened last
Thursday with Miss Elaine Bamford
as teacher. Miss Caldwell of Blyth is.
the new teacher in the 9th school.
Miss Donna Armstrong has gone to
London where she will attend High
School.
Mr. Levi Marwood and his sister,
Mrs. Robb, moved last week to their
new home in Auburn,

to sleet with then on Thursday, Sept,

Stewart Chamney spent a few days
with his sister, Mrs. Ernie Doerr, of

Mrs. George McRoberts opened her
home for the meeting of the Women's
Institute on Thursday with the new
president, Mrs. Lorne Durnin, in the
chair, The roll call was answered by
"My Favorite Pickle Recipe".. Plans
were made for conducting a booth at
the School Fair to be held on Sept.
25th. Mrs. Ecl; Purvis favoured with
a solo. In her paper on "Dressing up
Home -Grown Vegetables" Miss Mad-
eline Gaunt gave many useful hints.
Miss Geta Webb was appointed pian-
ist for the remainder of the year in
place of Miss Miss Florence McQuil-
lan, who leaves shortly to train in the
Stratford Hospital. Lunch was served
by the hostesses, Mrs. L. Durnin, Mrs.
C. Murray and Miss Annie Durnin.
Miss Muriel Hall, -of Toronto, was
a week -end visitor, with. Mrs. J. 13.
Rutherford.
Miss Muriel Pardon, of White-
church is staying with her grandpar-
ents, Mr. and Mrs. Arch. Anderson
and attending Continuation School'
here. Willie Humphrey of Belfast is
also attending.
The annual Thank -Offering -of the
W.M.S. will . be held next Sunday
morning at 11 o'clock when Miss Car-
oline Wellwood, missionary on fur-
lough from West China, will be the
speaker.
Messrs. Frank and Tom Todd were
visitors at (he C. N. E. last week. The
former also attended' rite meeting of
the Polled -Angus .•Breeders' Associa-
tion, of which he is. President. •

Death removed on Friday evening
a highly respected citizen of -the com-
munity in the person of Mrs. ;,Alex.
Stuart, at the age of :81, Mrs. Stuart
had been confined to bed since early
spring when she fell on the floor,
fracturing her hip, at the home a her
son, George. Before her marriage to
Mr. Alex. Stuart, who predeceased her
nearly twenty years ago, Mrs. Stuart
was, Miss Elizabeth Radcliffe. Surviv-
ing are four sons and one daughter,
Charles of Moosomin, Sask., Joseph
and George at home, Gregor of Chi-
cago, and Miss Anna, of Toronto. One
sister, Mrs. Wm. Cameron of Mitchell
and two brothers, Messrs. Tom and
Dan Radcliffe, of Dakota, also sur-
vive. The funeral service was held
from her alte residence .on Monday
afternoon, in charge of Rev, H. IvL
Wright, of the United Church, with
interment in the Dungannon .Cemet-
ery. The pall -bearers were, two sons,
Chas. and Joe, two nepliews, John
Cameron and.. Ross Murray, and two
neighbors, Chas, Durnin and George
McRoberts. -

Miss Vera, of Courey's Corners, are
spending a couple of weelcs in Lon-
don with Mrs. Little's sister, IVirs. Alf.
Armstrong and Mr. Armstrong,
Miss Ellen Andrew, of near Zion,
spent `Saturday afternoon with her
friend, Miss Jean Nelson, of Courey's
Corners.
A very fashionable wedding took
place in Hackett's United Church on
Saturday afternoon at four o'clock of
Mr. Ferries Mathers, only son of Mr.
and Mrs, Ferries Mathers, east of
Lucknow, and Miss Maizie Hackett,
only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alec
Hackett, 14th con, near Belfast, The
bride looked very charming, dressed
in white lace and wedding veil. Her
bridesrnaid, Miss Winnie Lane, and
the groom was supported by Mr. Mel-
vin Hackett, twin brother of the
bride. They will reside on the groom's
farm :east of Lucknow. We wish them
a long, happy, prosperous married life.
