'Saskatchewan Premier to Probe Riots
Regina—Appointment of a judicial
commission to investigate the trip of
relief camp workers through Saskat-
chewan and consequent rioting, was
made by the Saskatchewan Govern-
ment as 1,500 strikers from the camps
sped east and west to their homes or
relief camps, Complete investigation
will be made with specific attention to
Dominion Day rioting that cost the
life of Detective Charles Millar, in-
jury to about 100 persons, arrest of
120 and damage to city property es-
timated at $25,000.
Bennett Will Lead Party
Ottawa—Prime Minister Bennett
Will continue as Conservative Leader
in the approaching general election.
Following the Government caucus,
Mr, Bennett said: "I told. them I will

Italy Military Active
Rome Italy Supreme Naval Coun-
cil decided to increase the effective-
ness of the Italian fleet in case of a
war with Ethiopia. Premier Mussolini
is understood to have decided finally
that, unless the League of Nations es-
tablishes a mandate over Ethiopia,
Italian troops will wage war to re-
claim lands which Italy considers be-
long to her.
Otto Will Not Be King this Summer
Vienna—Foreign Minister Egon
Berger-Waldenegg denied that form
er Empress Zita and Archduke Otto,
her eldest son and Hapsburg claim-
ant to the Austrian throne, would visit.

U. S. Will Not Aid Ethiopia
Washington—The United States
sidestepped entanglement in the Italo-
Ethiopian. crisis by suggesting that the
League of Nations, which already is
arbitrating the dispute, will continue
its efforts to achieve a peaceful solu-
tion, Ethiopia asked the United States
to find some way to make Italy ob-
serve her obligations under the Kel-
lagg-Briand pact, bay, which she re-
nounced war as an instrument of na-
tional policy.
Flooded; in Peace River District
Edmonton—Most striking sign of a
general improvement in flood condi-
tions throughout the West, waters of
the Peace River were dropping al-
most as rapidly as they rose a week
ago. Citizens were busy repairing the
heavy damage caused in Peace River

Mount Vesuvius Active
Naples, Italy—Mount Vesuvius al-
armed citizens of Naples and near-
by towns with a terrifying eruption
but observers at the Vesuvius Obesrv-
atory assured the populace there was
no danger, Roaring flames spouting
from the volcano, whose lava and
ashies buried the ancient city of Pom-
peii, provided a magnificent display
for hundreds of thousands of Neapol-
itans and tourists in the district.
Mayor of London Loses Action
The manner in which Mayor Geo.
A. Wenige of London, Ontario, had
stopped a sale being conducted by
George R. Gardiner, auctioneer, last
October, was 'termed "inexcusable and
open to censure", by Mr, justice Kel-
ly in a judgment handed down at Os-
goode Hall, His Lordship granted
Gardiner $2,000 and costs against
Mayor Wenige, but dismissed Gardin-
er's action against the city of London.
Mayor Wenige is entering an appeal.

Boy Swimmer Injured
Harriston—Glen Tomlin, 10 -year-
old son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Tomlin,
received painful injuries to his head
while swimming here. Medical as-
asistance was rendered necessitating
several stitches to close the wound.
Porcupine Visits Dundalk
Dundalk—This village had an untis-
ual caller in the form of a full-grown
porcupine, which undertook to make
an inspection of the business section,
but alas, some small boys were the
first to be aware of its presence and
clubbed the animal to death ere more
sympathetic humans had a chance to
intervene,
Clinton Man Injured by Automobile
When struck by an automobile on
Highway No. 4 Friday, Joseph Quig-
ley, Clinton, suffered two broken legs,
a compound fracture of one, and oth-
er injuries. He is in Clinton Hospi-
taI. A. Hilburn, the driver of the car
which struck Quigley, was not held.
Traffic Officers Robinson and Lever
investigated.Quigley had driven his
car a short distance north of the town
to deliver a parcel at a farmhouse.
Reaching the gateway, he pulled up
on the right-hand side of the road,
alighted and walked behind the ve-
hicle and into the path of the oncom-
ing Hilburn automobile. He was hit
by the right fender and thrown vio-
lently to the pavement.
Stolen Good Recovered
Orangeville—Word reached town
goods, part of the valued at $1600
stolen early on Sunday morning from
the store of Hughes and Norris here,
it had been recovered in Toronto, and

Listowel Plant to Reopen
Backed by Mcmtreal interests, a new
industry is being started in the for-
mer

Wallace Street, Listowel, A. E. Wil-
liams, formerly of Oshawa, who has
been Superintendent of the 'A, Shack-
leton Company here for thepast few
years, will head the new industry, to
be known as the Victoria Woollens
and Worsteds. Only local labor will
be employed, and all yarns used in
weaving will be secured locally from
the Maitand Spinning' Mills. As soon
as arrangements are conijleted four
machines will be installed and four
more added every two months t ntil
capacity is reached.
Steal Car from Garage
The garage of Leslie Ball, Landes
boro, was broken into and it car be-
longing to the mechanic was : stolen
and, as yet, has not been recovered.
A car belonging to a London:man
was left at the garage which the
thieves filled with gas, .but it is sup -
;posed they could not get the ,ear start-

a petition asking for investigation in-
to the drainage entering the Maitland
River and at a meeting it was decided
to appeal to the Provincial Board o
Healfh and have an engineer visi

signed by several residents in the im-
mediate vicinity and by representativ-
es of recreation organizations.
Lucknow Teachers Re -Engaged
Members of the staff: of the High
and Public Schools, Lucknow, have
been re-engaged with one exception,
G. S. MacIntyre, of Paisley, will suc-
ceed C. E. Hutchinson, who resigned.
Other members of the staff have been
re -hired upon acceptance of reductions
in salaries made the board totalling

Boy Drowned at Grand Bend
Running into the cold water of
Lake Huron opposite the Grand Bend
Casino while overheated, was blamed
for the drowning of ten -year-old Ed-
ward "Teddy" Colville, son of James
Colville, mechanic on the Pere Mar-
quette Railway in Detroit. The boy
had been in bathing but a few minutes
when his body was found floating on

Dust Caused Driver to
Miss Turn in Road
As a result of missing a turn a mile
south of Antbet l,;y, Mrs. i. 5, Hoeft -
:eel and young danghter of 6998 Blaine
St., Cleveland, were taken to Kiticar-
dine Hospital suffering painful but
not serious injuries caesed when they
were thrown frutn the coupe in which
they were riling, Mr. I•ioeltzcl was
trailing another car, and failed to see
the turn near the "Gospel Hall" itt
Ashfield Township on account of the
dust raised by the car ahead. His car
left the road, crashed through a ditch
and landed between fence posts, Mrs,

Horses IiIled by Lightning
Arthur—To have the team of horses
he was driving suddenly, drop dead,
killed by a bolt of lightning, was the
startling experience of William Cook,
a West, Luther fanner living about
sty miles from here. Cook was oper-
ating a seed drill sowing a field of
barley and buckwheat when the light-
