that fire -blight Spread chiefly by
rain, that the fire -blight bacteria .pv-
erwinter in healthy looking tissues ad-
jacent to the dead areas (cankers),
and that the most reliable method of
control is the removal Of all infec-
tions': during ;winter pruning.
Infected twigs and branches in ap-
ple frees should be cut at least 6 in-
ches 'below the cankers, and in pear
trees at least 12 inches below the can-
kers. Judging .,:from results obtained
so far, it is not necessary to disin-
fect pruning tools When removing in-
fections,: during the winter •months,
Large branches and tree trunks with
cankers that d'O not girdle them, can
he sa-ved by :treatment. Remove the
exterior In:Own bark on antl beyond
the cankers, and paint over with a
disinfectant. With large cankers in
apple trees remove the outside, brpwn
bark to a distance of 6 inches below
and above the canker, and 3 inches at
the sides. In pear trees the area
should be twice as large, The disin-
fectant recommended -is prepared as
follows: In a 'glass or enamel con -
tallier mix 1quart water and 3 quarts
glycerine, .and heat to about 175 de-
grees F, First dissolve ounce cy-
anide of .mereury ,then 3/4 ounce bi-
chloride of mercury. Store only in
glass containers.
Caution: This is a deadly poison,
Only a thorough job in pruning out
fire -blight will give worth while re-
sults.' Since fire -blight is chiefly •
spread by rain, particular, care must
-be taken to remove twigs at, the top
of the- trees.
