COAL FUMES
Throughout Canada this last few
weeks several deaths have been re-
ported from gas .escaping from coal
stoves and furnae.es, and many other
near -tragedies have been averted by
quick action on the part of doctors,
firemen and others.
In the cold climate of ours we are
forced to use coal stoves and furnac-
es and when they are working right
and are properly operated theyare a
great comfort. But coal gas fumes
are deadly and much care should be
exercised to make certain that the gas
escapes properly. A defective furnace
is a menace and may bring disaster.
If your furnace gives • off gas, find
out the cause.

gIgTbHE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON,
®oma
THE CHRISTIAN HOME
Christmas Lesson.
Sunday, Dec. 23 -Luke 2:8-19; Eph.
6:1-4.
Golden Text:
Glory to God in the highest, and
on earth peace, good will toward men.
(Luke 2:14.)
God had a plan for the salvation
of. the world before ever the world
was created. He had made His plans
for the redemption of lost sinners be-
fore man was created or had sinned.
The world and roan were created at
least 4,000 years before the first
Christ Day, so that for, more than
4,000 years of human history God had
been looking forward to the day of
which we are- now studying, for the
nl
consunation of His loving and won-
derful plan.
Paul writes about this, that "when
1 the fulness of the time was come, God
sent forth His Son." (Gal. 4:4.)
And the writer of the Epistle of
the Hebrews tells us:that "now once
in, the end'of the world (or, consum-
mation of the ages) hath He apncared
to put'away sin by the sacrifice of
Himself:"' (Heb. 9:12.) '
If . Christmas Day is 'a wonderful
days for us, we may be sure'that it is
a much more wonderful day in God's
sight. .

Mr. Durigan Finds. Relief in
Kellogg's ALL -BRAN
''
Here is his enthusiastic letter;
"Am 70 years of age, and for 40
of these years there never was a
week but what I had to take a pill
or some kind of cathartic.
"I took everything, but gained
only temporary relief. Until last
spring my daughter, who is a nurse
in a hospital, brought me some
Kellogg's ALL -BRAN.
"At the end of the week, I knew
I had something that was it, and I
kepton taking it. I haven't taken
a cathartic since. I can eat neat
any time, as often as I like, or any
other kind of food, and no consti-
pation." --Mr. L: M. Durigan (ad-
dress furnished upon request).
Laboratory tests show Kellogg's
ALL -BRAN provides "bulk" to ex-
ercise the intestines, and vitamin B
to help muscle tone. Also iron for
the blood.
The "bulk" in ALL -BRAN is mu
like that of lettuce. Inside the body,
it forms a soft mass. Gently, it
clears out the intestinal' wastes.
How much ,safer than patent med-
icines. Two tablespoonfuls daily
are usually sufficient. With each
meal in serious cases. If not re-
lieved this way, see your doctor.
Sold in the red -and -green pack-
age. At all grocers. Made by
Kellogg in'Lontlon, Ontario.
foreordained, 4,000 years earlier,
should be "the fulness of tune" for
the earthly incarnation and ministry
of His
Son.
Mary, who ..was to be
the virgin mother of the Son of God,
lived .with her husband Joseph in the
City of Nazareth, far to the north
of Bethlehem. And Bethlehem was
"the City of David" in which God
had planned and had revealed in the
Old Testament Scriptures, that His
Son should be born when the time
came. Seven centuries before the
birth of Christ the Prophet Micala
predicted by divine i
nspirat ton: But
thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though
thou be little among the thousands
of Judah, yet out of thee shall' He
come forth unto Me that is to be
ruler in Israel; whose goings forth
have been from of old, from everlast-
ing" (Micah 5:2).
How were Mary and Joseph to be
brought to Jerusalem for the birth
of the babe Jesus? God saw to' it
that the mighty Roman Emperor,
Caesar Augustus, should issue an im-
perial and world-wide decree, just at
the proper time, So we read: "And.
it came to pass in those days, that
there went out a decree from Caesar
Augustus, that all the world (inhab-
ited earth) should be taxed. . . And
all went to be taxed, every ,one into
his own city. And Joseph also went
up from Galilee, out of the City of
Nazareth, into Judea, unto the City
of David, which is called Bethlehem;
(because he was of the house .and lin-
eage of David:) to be taxed with
Mary his espoused wife, being great
with child."
Every Old Testament pophecy con-
cerning the birth of Israel's Messiah
was fulfilled in detail at this time,
when Jesus was born in Bethlehem.
"Shepherds abiding in the field
keeping watch over their flock by
night," were among the favored few
to whom came heavenly announce-
ment of the best news this old earth
has ever heard. Startling things hap-
pened. "And, lo, the angel of the
Lord came upon them, and the glory
of the Lord shone round about them;
and they were sore afraid."
We hear a good deal of light,.cheap
talk today in defiance of God, or in
scoffing indifference. But whenever
men are actually brought into the pre-
sence of "the glory of the Lord" they
lose their indifference and their, de-
fiance; they are "sore afraid.
Yet this was not a time to be
afraid, The angel's first word to these
trembling, men was: 'Fear not." He
gave his reason why they should not
be afraid: "For, behold., I bring you
good tidings of great joy, which shall
be to all people."
At once he explained just what this
"good tidings of great joy" was. "For
unto you is born this day in the city
of David, a Saviour, which is Christ
the :Lord." •
There has been only one Saviour
for mankind and for this 'world sitice
Adam fell and sin entered the hutnan
race. That Saviour is the 'only be-
gotten Son' of God: "For there is one
God, and one mediator between God.
ancl men, the man Christ Jesus; vvho
gave Himself a ransom for all" (I.
Tim. 2:5, 6), The helpless babe of
Bethlehem, "lying in a manger" was
He of whom John wrote: "In the be-
ginning"was the Word, arid the Word
was with God, and the Word was
God" (John 1:1), This "Wordwas
made flesh, and dwelt among us"
(John 1:14).
Why did the eternal Christ come
down to earth, triter our flesh as a
link 41
babe, and live here as a man? Was
it simply, to reveal God' to us? No;
God had revealed Himself through
believers, priests, prophets and kings
over again in Old Testament times,
and could do so: again.
Christ became man, not primarily
in order to live before us, but in order
to the for us. "Neither is there sal-
vation
l
vation in any other; for there is none
other name under heaven given
among men, whereby we must be sav-
ed" (Acts 4:12), •
Because of all this' the "mlutitude
of the heavenly host" Gouldraise.
God that first p
Christmas night into
say: "Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace, good will toward
men."
Sin :had' separated men frpm God,
Christ by His incarnation, life, death
and resurrection, brid$ed the gulf and:
made possible the Gospel of'salvation.
That was God's great Christmas
Gift to a lost world.

King Devil Hawkseed
ys
Bing Devil is a variety of hawk -
seeds introduced into Canada from
Europe and is becoming a very ser-
ious pest in many sections of. Eastern
Canada. It occurs chiefly in pastures
or old hayfields that are low in fer-
tility, and its squat rosette type of
growth, with the leaves close to the
ground, enables it to smother out
weaker plants, causing Hauch waste of
forage. The most economical method
of control is by practising relatively
short rotations on all cultivated an
as and by keeping up the soil fer-
tility by the use of manure or fertil-
izers, On permanent pastures the
weed has been almost ' completely
controlled by using a complete fer-
tilizer made up of sulphate of am-
monia 100 pounds, super -phosphate
300 pounds, and muriate of potash 75
pounds, applied every second year,
with the sulphate of ammonia applied
early in the spring of the odd year.
After two comjplete applications of
the complete fertilizer, it would
ap-
pear,
peal that as good results will be
se-
cured by applying this once every 3
years, with the sulphate applied the
other two years. On lawns the use
of a complete fertilizer, or even sul-
phate of ammonia alone applied on
the wet 'plants, will give good con-
trol and force the growth of the de-
sirable grasses and clover.
