GIVEN ON "PEACE"
The Gorrie branch of the Women's
Instituto met t on Wednesday sdaY & fter-
noon at the home of Mrs, John Ca-
thers, and had as their guests, the
Belmore Institute. Mrs, L, F, Ash-
ton, president of the local branch,
presided, and opened the meeting in
the usual manner with the Ode and
Lord's Prayer, followed by the Min-
utes which were adopted; and sev-
eral items of business, Misses Stok-
es :•of the visiting society gave sever-
al guitar duets which were very much
enjoyed. The paper of the day was
given by Mrs.. (Dr.) Ramage, who
spoke on the subject "Education is
a better National Safeguard to a
country than a Standing Army," and
gave the societies an idea of the work
acco"mplished by the League of Na-
tions, the causes of the late war, in
bare facts, and the great need of
"Peace" throughout the length and
Breadth . of the whole world; that
there be less selfishness and in short
"Do unto others as you would have
them do to you." Total disarmament
with all nations and cancellation of
all war debts: Following this excel-
lent paper, roll call was responded
to by „a suggestion for a "Good Dish
for a Hot Day." Mrs. T. Abraham
of the -visiting Institute spoke a few
Newels before the meeting was closed
with the National Anthem: '..During a
social half hour refreshments' were
sexed; by the hostess and the lunch
committee.

Mr, and Mrs. William Gregg have
purchased the property of Mr. Max-
well Abram, perhaps better known as
the Williams House,; Mr. Abram pur-
chased this property some three years
ago. Mr. and Mrs, Gregg Will not
take possession for some little time

OBITUARY
Thos. G. Shearer
The death occurred. in Turnberry,
lot 2, con. 2, on Sunday, Aug. 6th,
of Thos. G. Shearer after a brief ill-
ness of two weeks' duration, The de-
ceased had suffered from two strokes
earlier hi his life and it was a third
which was responsible for his death,
The late Thomas Gibson Shearer
was in his
76thear. He was

remaining there for two years he and
his parents returned to Scotland and
took up their abode at Rothsay, Here
they lived almost four years before
,coming to Canada. They settled on
the farm now owned by Arthur Fitch
one and one-cittarter iniles south of
Behnore in the Township of Howick.
After spending his youth ori the
farm he attended school and obtain-
ed his second class teacher's certifi-
tate. Altogether he taught eighteen
years, fourteen and one-half years of
which were spent at Orange Hill
where he achieved great success in
the profession.
Next he changed
purchased the farm now owned by
Jos. Thomson on the 9th con. o
Remick, where he lived until just a
little more than a year ago.
He took an active part in public
life, spending five years in the town.

(Elizabeth), of Amulet, Sask. He had
one sister, Mrs, William Twamley
(Margaret) of Lucknow, who prede-
ceased : hint some years ago.
The funeral was held fronthis late
home on Tuesday afternoon to Gor-
rie cemetery. The pallbearers were:
