TIMOTHY STARTS
TO PREACH
'To the Editur av all thim
Wingham paypers.
Deer Sur:—
It begins to look loike as if thim
lads over in ould London will all be
lavin fer home widout annyting to
show fer theer thrip, barrin a good
time. Some payple will be afther
blamin France, an some will say that
President Roosevelt trowed a mon-
key wrinch into the masheenery, an
mebby some will tink it wus Hitler,
arr Musselino, arr Rooshia, arr the
King av the cannibal oilands who
sit:topped the clock, but the rale ray -
son fer the failure is that iviry fellah
wus tinkin av the byes at home, an
av what he ,cucl. do to plaize thim the
besht, an av how rnanny votes he
wud win arr lose at the nixt
elick-
shun be rayson av what he said arr
did at the Conferince.
Yis, an srure what caused the
thrubble theer, is what is the mat-
ther wid the whole wurruld at the
prisint toime. 'Tis silfishness, an iv-
iry fellah pityin himsilf, inshtid av
tinkin av the thrubbles av the other
fellah, that has trown the thrain aff
the thrack, an not be rayson av an-
nyting bein wrong wid the rails at
all, at all. Me frind, Tam McLean,
arr annyWan ilseimay buisl the besht
hoighways in the counthry, an not be
able to prevint accidints, so long as
some fellahs want to hog the whale
road, an not give army consideraalum
to the resht av the thravellers.
'Tis the way av the wurruld, even
in the Churches, fer payple to went
to thravel just a little bit fashter than
the other fellashr, an 'give thim the
dusht. If ivirybody wud fergil about
his own plans an thrubbles, an shtart
tinkin av the fix his naybor is in,
tings wud be betther, so they wud.
Av coorse, I know it is aisier to,
praich than to practice, ispishally
whin ye hey a lame back yersilf, an
the missus won't let ye wear yer
•shkunk skin bilt, unliss ye take yer
• males, an shlape in the woodshed.
But as ould Tammas Carlyle set in
wan av his books, "If ye ottly con-
sidher that ye deserve to be hung,
which is mosht loikely, thin ye will
be plaized if ye are sintinced to be
shot instid", arr wurruds to that ef-
ickt ne mimory is not what it
wance was, fer remirriberin tings.
Fer inshtance, if thin Grits shad
ivir git into awfice agin, it wud be
bad polishy fer us Tories to worry
about the wreck av the ould parthy,
but we shud pity the counthry, an
prepare fer the nixt elickshun. The
praichers do be tellin us that love an
charity mane the same ting, an inch -
by they shud know, but I don't want
to tink that the missus only married
inc fcr charity, an because I had no-
