THE WINGHAM ARENA.
Last Thursday the Arena was to.
be sold under the auctioneer's ham-
mer, but, at the last moment, this
should be remembered that the pro-
ceeds are for a very worthy cause --

The World Economic Conference
reminds us of Napoleon's array. They
keep marching up and down the hill,
and when they are half way dip the
hill they are neither up nor down.

After every holiday and week -end
the papers report the loss of many
lives. What price pleasure!

that this building, which cost the
citizens of Wingham about $21,000,
should not be sold • and removed at
a sacrifice price. They therefore re-
commended to the Town Council
that the ratepayers be given the priv-
ilege of endorsing a By-law to pur-
chase the Arena.
The Council agreed with the Cham -

A London Minister asked that his

would have been news if this offer
was not accepted.

Premier Bennett and President
Roosevelt are given credit for sav-
ing the collapse of the World Econ-
ber of Commerce and the ratepayers omic Conference. It look now as if

The rise of the Canadian dollar and
the pound sterling. during ; the last
week were the highlights of the
news.
the By -Law is prepared and' the ne-
cessary arrangements completed.
It was 'on November 29th, 1919,
that the Arena built by Harry Wards -
man was blown clown and it was not
until Tuesday, Nov. 11th, 1924, that
-the construction on the present Ar-
ena was commenced, and this by the
efforts of a number of public-spirited
citizens. The Arena was opened on
January 26th, 1925, and all were ag-
reed and still agree, that this Arena
is one of the finest for a town of.
this population, in Ontario.
Once before . the citizens had an
opportunity to help finance this pro-
position. This was in December of
1927, when the ratepayers defeated a
by-law' to loan the Arena Co. $5000.
The vote was close, 325 for, to 334
against.
For a short time after this the Ar-
ena did very well financially but for
the past few years the same as a
great many other rinks, they have
had difficulty in meeting their. obli-
gations. The result of this was the
Arena was . advertised for sale,
It will be clearly up to the rate-
payers now whether they wish to buy
this property or not. It surely would
be a shame if this building were sold
and removed from town, and it now
looks as if this will take . place un-
less the ratepayers pass the 'by -lax-
for it purchase. j

The Toronto papers are -sure that
the Provincial election will be held
in October, but the Premier states
he has not heard of it. Maybe he has
