MOTHER'S DAY
Next Sunday is Mother's Day, and
all the churches will be holdingser-
vices in honor of the mothers of this
country. The idea of IVlother's Day
till train has been on exhibition'
in Ottawa, Toronto and Hamilton;
was visited by . thousands of people
at each place it wa;; on exhibition.
All seem to agree that this train
which is bound for the World's Fair
at Chicago, is the last word in this,
class of Railway equipment, The vis-
it of this train to Canada was a splen-
did opportunity for Canadians to see
what the Mother Country considers
her best in passenger' trains, but it
may be `a difficult matter to arrange.
for further exhibitions of this spec-
ial on > its way back •frdm Chicago;
because souvenir hunters, despite
close watch of officials, took any-
thing they could possibly get hold
of as souvenirs. A grease cup, off the
was first suggested by Miss Anna , engine was even taken by some per -
Jarvis, of Philadelphia, and since that son,Tltat most people would be quite
time has been held the second, Sun-
dlay each May, satisfied to see over this train is
)riate idea most likely, but those who stripped
IC seems a, most apptol
that one Sunday of the year is set
aside to pay homage to mothers. To
those who cannot be with their mo-
thers on this day, bring happiness to
her by letter, or by a gift. Pay tri-
bute to the best mother in the world
on Mother's Day -your own Mother.

!PREMIUM ON GOLD
The decision at Ottawato pay Can-
adian gold mines in terms of the
highest prevailing market price in the
world which at present happens to be
in Landon, is a boom to the gold
mining industry. The price being'paid
paid at present is $27.'73 an ounce,
which gives a: premium of about 33
per cent, Why the Canadian Govern-
ment should pay a premium on gold
mined in this country is hard to un-
derstand. It is in their power to stop
export of gold and the mines can
more than pay on the standard price
but with this premium, they are plac-
ed in a most enviable position of re-
ceiving more : for this product than.
it is worth. ,
The worker in the mine gets no
more for his labor than if the mine
were getting the standard price for
gold. True, the stockholders will re -1
ceive larger dividends, many of whom
live outside Canada, in fact, most of
the mines are controlled outside Can-
ada, but it is the Canadian taxpayer
who foots the bill for these increas-
ed dividends and we cannot see why
they should be thus burdened.

NO FIRE .TRUCK AT PRESENT
The Council at its last meeting
took up the matter of new fire fight-
ing equipment` for the town. They
all seemed to agree that the fire
truck that gave the demonstration
here was an ideal apparatus to meet
the requirements of the town. Some
were in favor of purchasing the ap-
paratus and paying for it by the is-
sue of 10 -year debentures of about
$408 each, Others, while in favor of
this apparatus felt that such expendi-
ture should be endorsed by the rate-
payers, but neither motion hadsuf-
ficient votes to .carry, so for the pre-
sent at least, no great addition will
be made to our fire fighting equip-
ment:
