Clarke .5 As I write it is the Week before Christmas - and what weather! The wind is so cold it seems utterly im- possible to keep the house warm - for the first time since we had the furnace installed. That is because the wind is in the southwest and all our storm windows arc on the north and north-west of the house. But at any rate it isn't storming so we have touch to be 0:ankh:I for, especially with coal in the cellar and a recently cut woodpile in the yard. I wish I could he sure that everyone else was equally fortunate, I feel the cold so much myself that it just makes elle wonder how people eau suffer hark of heat, clothe, food and bediting and still survive, * si ;; Well, 1 have just turned on tete radio and judging froin the storm news from Buffalo we, by compar- ison, certainly have little to com- plain about on this side of the bor- der - at least, not at present. And then, as if to convey the impre$sion that Old Mau Whiter is not always in a harsh mood I saw front the kitchen window the most glorious sunrise I have seen in weeks - flame tipped purple clouds against a back- groied of the palest green. A typ- ical Turneresque sky -except that Turner's pictures are mostly of sun- sets, are they ]tot? When I said something to son Bob about the beautiful sunrise he told me I should .have seen the mooul He said (bat when he went to the barn it was dike walking out on to a great beam of light. So now 1 suppose I should get up to see the moon - and I :thought I was doing pretty well a- bout the sun. Excuse me a tuinute...I think it is light enough now for the hens to feed - so I had better go and feed "ern, Br -r -r , , : It's good to be back in the warm again! I wish I were as anxious to get down to business first thing in the morning as our busy biddies. Barely light enough for then( to sec and yet they are tip and doing and had laid exactly one clozrn eggs just to start the day right I suppose. In fact one of thein couldn't wait for the dawn so she dropped her egg in the night. And now, having listened to Geo- ffrey Ford pinch-hitting for Jim Huffier. it is time to get breakfast pfor Partner. You gee we have breakfast in relays here. Bob is gen- erally up and out to the barn before Partner guts up. That way we can be sure of Partner getting a little extra rest. 'But then Bob is natur- ally through 'first - hence the two breakfasts. Partner, like nearly all sten, is just about as stubborn as he eau be. I want him to sell some of his cows. and he nr t t- on keeping (hem, Olt yes lie des say this one and that will be , iiil, ped out "when they are dry", but lin beginning to think the means "dry" alter the next time they have cone in fresh, 1 "threat- ened" this morning to go ;luso and help with the milking later on if`Ite still kept so many tnilch cows "Well", said Partner, "if it ever be - exiles accessary to help withthe milling that will be the time to call. the truck in and ship then( all outl" Yc.0, ice, Pariner has the idea that milking is no job for a woman - which will strike litany farm people as a gllter ]lotion. Taking it ail in all this milk bus• Ines, is 'unite a job, -'9: often think that :when a, farmer startsshipping tnilk lila like a marl taking; to 0011115, The more he has the more he wants. A. farmer who separates his milk and sells the cream does 't worry particularly when his 1111 k supply falls off. He has his pigs and itis poultry to utilise the skint 1ni110 and, generally speaking, he has something coming in most of the time from his by-products. Rut a fanner selling milk .. well, he pro- bably starts by shipping two cans. Then maybe he has half a can over and he thinks if only he had a little more milk he could ship three cans. So he econts around and buys an- other cows. Ily now he has reached the early stages of ]bilk -drunken- ness, Later he imbibes still further. He thinks if twelve cows bring in so-and-so he might as well get a milking machine and milk twenty- four. That is just fine for an up and coming young dairy farmer - that is the way it should be. But there are too many older men also trying tate sante strait - overtaxing their strength for the sake of selling milk and, still more milk, and mare than likely tete women, who, in all pro- bability have reached the age when they should be taking things easy, must still go to the barn to help 1' milk the cows that kelp tete mills cheques rolling in. But maybe I had better quit be- fore I say too much. VOICE OF THE PRESS ANIMAL LORE The following advice courts from t Wall Street expert: "Be bullish in a bull market; be bearish in a bear market." And, we would add if you can't be tither, don't be a goat, or you're an ass,- - Toronto Sat- urday Night MARK OF GOOD MAN In this wave of crime, what, thc country needs is more plowing matches. Who ever heard of a good plowman who didn't go straight? -Ottawa Citizen. ODDS ON THE WINNER When a motorist decides to race a train to a crossing, it doesn't ]nat- ter which wins. Have You Heard? "Johnny;" said Itis mother, se verely, "someone Itas taken a big piece of ginger cake out of the pantry." Johnny blushedguiltily, and fidgeted around, "Olt, Johnny," she exclaimed, "I didn't think it was in youl" "It ain't all," replied Johnny, "part of it's In Elsie," Fifth -Avenue Shopper: "What a frightful price you ask for that hat!" Salesgirl: "I know, Madam, but it's a frightful hat." - "And now," said the history teach- er brightly, "can anyone tell me.who Joan of Arc was?" The class was silent, and then one small boy ventured tentatively, "Maybe she was Noah's wife?" He: "Honestly, now, do you, women like egotistical men as well as the other kind?" She: "What other kind?" Salesman: "Are you interested in book ends?" Xmas shopper: "Yes that's . al- ways the bit. I read first," During the war the British flew 18 railway Icomotives to Burma, Pardon Me Severely jostled in the thunder- ing herd of London's rush hour, a fragile young woman finally found herself in a solid block, Her sense of humour was not impaired, however. She poked her face close to tete car of an adjoining male: "Look, she demanded tartly "my rib -is it Crushing your el- bow?" GOVERNMENT RELEASES TIRES.'
