linked up with the Canada Land Co.
and built the first road through the
Huron Tract; he opened the first
inn along the new road for the in-
coming settlers and harvested the
first crop in Huron. He is said to
have lost both ears in some esca-
pade and always wore a close -fitting
cap over his head,
It is not likely that he knew much
about the politics of Ontario, but
he had quarreled with the Canada
Land Co.; he realized that the
settlers had many grievances and so
.he linked up with William Lyon Mac-

is named after the doughty old
colonel.

carriage shops, a harness shop, and
even a brewery and distillery, Those;
were the gay days of Bayfield,!
on the river the Scotchmen curled.
Tt was impossible to secure stones
from Scotland. The ingenious pion-
eers had stones matte of wood. There
are several old wooden stones in the
attics of Bayfield, reminders of
early days. Then the' young blonde
played cricket. There was a drill
shed and hockey in the winter. The
old-timers will tell ,von that those
were the days. There is not r'oom'to .
