The Arnold Circle held their
.March meeting at the hone of Mrs.
Geo, Moir on Tuesday evening with
Mrs. Melvin Moir presiding. The
Scripture reading was by Mrs. Roy
Bell after which Mrs. Jack Farquhar
led in prayer. Mrs. Charles Forrest
very ably took the topic from the
third chapter of the study book.
Mrs. Geo. Hess is visiting with
relatives in Detroit,
Mrs. W. B. Carr returned home
recently from a visit with relatives
in Toronto.
Miss Helen Moir returned home
after spending several weeks in
London.
Mrs. Geo. Cowen and Teddy are
visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Cowen
near Blyth.
• Mr. Alex. Mousseau of Brantford
spent the week end at his home.
Mr. Fred Corbett, who has been
confined to his room owing to illness,
is somewhat improved.
Dr. A. R. Campbell of Guelph vis-
ited with friends here last week.
Rev. Joseph Taylor, Mrs, Taylor
and Audrey called on friends here
last -week.
Mrs. Bowden of Exeter visited re-
cently with her daughter and son-in-
law, Mr. and Mrs. John Farquhar.
A lifelong resident, Mrs. John
Leiper, passed away at her home on
Thursday in her 88th year. The de-
ceased was born in Hay township.
She was the former Mary Carlile and
spent her entire life in Hensall, ex-
cept a few years in St. Catherines,
Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. An-
drew Buchanan, Hensall, Mrs, Sadie.
E. Thompson, London, Mrs. J. Walk-
er, Hensall; three brothers, Alfred
E. Carlile, Ernest J. Carlile,'both of
Detroit, and William of Winnipeg.
Private funeral service was conduct-
ed by Rev. R. A. Brook from the
residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Walker
on Saturday afternoon, burial in
Hensall Union cemetery.
Death of Robert Dewar
Robert Dewar, a well known resi-
dent, passed away in Victoria Hospi-
tal, London, on Thursday in his 82nd
year. He had been ill in the hospital
for week. Survivin6'-are his widow,
the former Mary Stirling of Bay-
field, two sons, Roy of London, and
Archie, of Woodham, three brothers,
George, David and .James, all of
Bayfield, a sister, Miss Mary Dewar
of Kincardine. Funeral service was
held from the residence here on
Saturday at 3 p.nt, Burial in Bay-
field cemetery.
Dies in Edmonton—
Word has been received of . the
death of Mrs, Janes Johnston in
Edmonton Hospital on March 20th,
formerly of Hensall. Mr. and Mrs.
Johnston had just moved to thei
new home at Ryley, Alta„ to live
retired, as their eldest son had re
calved his discharge from, the ser-
vice and had taken over the home
place. Mrs. Johnston had not been in
good health since last fall when she
suffered a stroke. Her last illness
was caused by.a fall which fractured
her hip and the shock in her -vealc
ened condition resulted in her death.
The funeral was held from the Ed-
monton funeral chapel to the Ed-
montonShe formerly

Miss Ida Rathwell daughter of the

late Mr. and Mrs. John Rathwell,
Stanley, near Varna. She is survived
by her husband, James Johnston and
three sons, Harvey J., on the home

wireless telegraphy operator, and
three grandsons. Much sympathy is
extended to the family in their ber-

Gnr.. Howard N. Smale, San of.
Mr. and Mrs. George Sniale, arrived
at his home here on Thursday after
three years of service overseas, be-
ing invalided home. He was .wounded'
in action in Holland in December,
1944, with bullet wounds in right
arm and thigh. He spent three
months in hospital in Englancl prior
to being invalided home. Howard
has his aria in a cast and the wounds
in his thigh are healing gradually.
He has the highest praise for treat-
ment-received
reatment-received while in Hospital - "in
England, and said the kindness re- -
ceived on the boat and in landing
would never be. forgotten. He says
it was a great thrill to land on Can-
adian soil. .

She spoke ably and well on the
question of efficiency versus the in-

have in our post-war world. The war
work report was given. - Mrs. Alex.,
McGregor reported 231 ' pieces of
Red Cross sewing handed in. Mrs.
Edgar Butt favored with two Irish
numbers on the piano, It was decided
to have the CKNS ranch boys at the
Easter dance to be held in Hensall.
Friday evening, April Gth, The next
overseas boxes will be packed at the
home of Mrs. Winston Workman in
May. Cigarettes will be sent for the
month of April. Meeting closed by
singing the national anthem and
lunch was served by the lunch com-
mittee.
