The following letter will be of int-
erest: Dear friends: It gives me great
pleasure to write thanking you for
the lovely gift 1 received in the form
of my gift bag. I am sure it must have
taken up a lot of your time to think
of all the things a sailor at sea would
require, and I am sure you have not
forgotten anything, either. It is nice
to' receive such gifts as these, to feel
the friendship formed between the
men of the fighting forces and the
people at home. We wish, and I am
sure you do also, that the war was at
an end and we could live our lives in.
Peace once more. This fighting ship
HMS. Goodson, built in Boston and,
manned by Scotch and English sail-
ors, will, I am sure, help greatly in
this task. I am myself Scotch. I come
from the Midlands of Scotland, where
the steelworks are, and munitions of
war are made. Although I like Amer-
ica and the people that live in it, I
would rather be in Britain with all
the bombing and the scars of war. I
am sure the American lads in Britain
feel the same towards America and
their •native country. I shall close
now, thanking the pupils of Varna
School once more for their lovely gift.
Yours truly, Daniel Reid. D/J1 426267,

Of the 960,000 Bell Telephones in Ontario and Quebec,
72 per cent are dial instruments. Step -liar -step, the pro-
gramme of conversion to dial service has gone forward in
many cities and towns while the tide, of telephone traffic
continued to flow.
There has been no interruption of.. service — a notable
engineering and- co-ordinating achievement.
War called a halt to this
dial conversion programme.
But it will resume when
materials and men are again
available.
