REED CANARY GRASS
Reed Canary grass (P,.halaris
arundinaeea) is a' hardy, long-lived
perennial, characterized by its
smooth, broad leaves and coarse
stents. Under favourable conditions
this grass may reach a height of
from 6 to 8 feet and produce -a yield
of 2 to 4 tons of hay per acre, States
F. S. Nowosad, Division of .Forage
Plants. Central Experimental" Farm,
Ott.
Thawais grass thrives best in moist
locations which are low-lying and
poorly drained. It will grow and
thrive in water for considerable
periods and grows particularly well
where free water is near the surface
of the ground. This grass, however,
may he injured by deep stagnant
water during the hot summer
months. It is admirably adapted to
fertile soils, muck or fairly well de-
composed peat and readily spreads
by its underground steins once it is
established,
