FLOWERS FOR THE LIVING
. With the passing of 1949 we recall
an incident in the life of Duff's
United Church, Walton, of more than
ordinary interest.
In the late 50's of the last century,
among the new settlers who carne to
build 1101(1" in this new lance, were
James and Mrs. Smillie,. who settled
on the 19th Concession of trey Tp.

Halo of his death fifty-five years later.
11. 1560 when the Sunday School was
organized. Mr. Smillie became its lirat
superintendent. From that day onward
the name of Smillie has been closely
linked with the various organizations
and the life of Duff's Presbyterian
Church and, since union, of Duff's
United Church.
Last spring Miss Mary Smillie—now
the only surviving member of the fam-
ily—tendered her resignation as treas-
urer of the church, having served in
that capacity for a period of forty-
Sive years. In passing the writer won-
ders how many to this county have
matched that record. Forty-five years
is a long term in any office. To win
and hold the trust and confidence of
the growing congregation throughout
the years was uo mean accomplish-
ment.
The ministers who have come and
gone found in Miss Smillie not merely
an efficient treasurer but a counsel-
lor and a friend, ready always to go
the second mile, meticulous in detail.
Jealous for the good name of the
church and generous in the support of
Mrs. Looby will reside in Dublin.

Rourke officiated at the wedding of
Miss Anna Raftis, daughter of Mr,
and Mrs. Patrick Raftis, of Arthur,
to Leo Vincent Carlin, son of Mr.
and Mrs. James Carlin, of Seaforth.
St. Peters choir sang during the
ceremony. The bride was given in
marriage by her father. She wore a
light blue dressmaker suit, small,
black ribbon hat with plastic bow
and veil trimmed with sequins. Her
accessories were of black plastic and
she worea corsage bouquet of red
roses. Miss Margaret Holland of
Toronto, as bridesmaid wore a light
beige dressmaker ' suit, beige hat
with plastic trimming, black acces-
sories and corsage bouquet of pink,
roses. The groomsman .was the
bride's brother, Michael Raffia, of
London, and the ushers were Pat
Raftis of Arthur, also a brother, and.
Harry Reynolds of London. At the
reception held- at Lynn Lodge, the
bride's mother received, wearing a
black wool suit, winter white hat
and blackaccessories, a corsage
bouquet of white roses completing
her costume. The groom's mother
wore a brown dress, matching hat
