A large crowd attended a delight-
ful banquet held in Duff's United
Church on May lst. The Session of
the Church • entertained several mem-
bers and adherents of the church
who have recently returned from
overseas. Two previous banquets
have been held, and at all three,
about twenty members of His Ma-
jesty's forces have been thushon-
oured. After enjoying a bountiful
meal served by the ladies of the
church, Rev. Hazlewood, as chair-
man, proposed, a toast to the King,
which was followed by singing God
Save the King. Mr. S. Johnston read
an address of welcome which was
followed by a short programme. Rev.
S. H. Brenton of Ethel was the
speaker of the evening and his ad-
dress was much enjoyed by all pre-
sent.
In keeping with Daylight. Saving.
Time, Sunday School at Duff's
United Church will begin next Sun-
day at 10:30 Daylight Saving Time,
and church service will begin at 11:
30, for the summer months. Next
Sunday, being Mother's Day, the
Sacrament of Baptism will be ob-
served.
TUCKERSMITH
Death of John McMillan:—
The death occurred in the hospital
on Tuesday, of Mr. John McMillan
in his 49th year. Mr. McMillan suf-
fered a stroke on Sunday, his side
being paralized. He was the eldest
son of Mr. Hugh McMillan and his
wife, the late Mary Gormley, Tuck-
crsmith. He was -1 born and lived in
Tuckersmith all his life, residing on
the farm with his father and blather.
Surviving are his father, one brother
Hugh, . Tuckersmith, and one sister,
Sister Mary Frances, of St. Joseph's.

taking 'place Thursday morning from
his late residence, lot 5, con. 9,
Tuckersmith, to St. James' Church,
Seaforth, Rev. Father Hussey con-
ducting the service, Interment in St.
James' cemetery.

scripture lesson was read by Mrs.
Houghton, and Mrs. MacWilliazn led
in prayer. The roll call was answered
by 11 members, Mrs. Town Scott,. sr.,
gave the thankoffering prayer; the
Glad Tidings prayer was offered by
Mrs Keith McLaren; Mrs. William
Harper gave a paper on "The iChal.
lenge of Our Day"; the first chapter
of the new study book on Africa was
read by Mrs. Lloyd Sorsdahl; and
the meeting closed with prayer by
Mrs. MacWilliam.
The Ladies' Aid Society met at
the close of the W.M.S. meeting,
with the president in charge. A let-
ter was read from a family in Hol-
land who had received a bale of
clothing from the Society. The meet-
ing closed with prayer by Mrs.
Houghton.

Varna School pupils won top
honors at the Goderieh •Musk Pesti-.
vat, capturing one of the Huron
County shields in the chorus, sung on
Tuesday night and second place in
the chorus sung on Thursday night.
Kenzieth Keys won first place in the
solo eleven years and under,
George Murray Beatty won second
place for boys solo fourteen and
under. Duet eleven and under. Ruth
Clarke and Kenneth Keys. won sec-
ond place. Much credit is due Mrs.

Those from Varna who attended
the Huron County Festival of Music
at Goderieh, last week, and who were
awarded prizes for vocal solo, first,
Kenneth Keyes, second, George
Beatty; vocal duet, Ruth Clarke and
Kenneth Keyes, second, In the uni-
son chorus the school came first,
winning a shield. In the two part
songs the school came second.
Note: Varna chopping mill will, be
operating 3 days a week, Tuesday,
Thursday and Saturday; and Wed-
•nesday afternoon, commencing Tues
day, May 14th, until further notice.
The stores in Varna will observe
the Wednesday half holiday until
further notice,
Mr. and. Mrs. David Sofer, who
spent the past week with son Harold
and Mrs. Sofer, returned to their
hone,' Sunday, •
Several from the community at-
tended the Thompson—Aldwinkle
wedding held in St. Paul's Church,
Clinton,. Saturday.
Since most of the centres of im-
portance have adopted Daylight Say-
ing Time, Varna, to avoid confusion
decided to go Daylight Saving, so
next Sunday the Church services will
be one hour earlier.

accompanied by Miss Hazel Wisson
and Miss Irma Schultz of Straf--
fordsville were Sunday guests of
former's sister, Mrs. Soper.
Mr, and Mrs. George Gibson and
daughter Isabel, Oakville, visited at
.the home of Mr. and Mrs. M, Elliott,
Mrs. M. Reid, Mrs. E. Chutez', Mrs.
M. Elliott and Miss E. E. Mossopat-
tended the annual meeting of the
Huron Diocesan board of the Woman's
Auxiliary in St. Paul's Cathedral and
Cronyn Hall, London , Wednesday,
Mrs. Reid and Miss Mossop going as
delegates.
Mrs. Gemieithardt of Wyoming is'
the guest of her brother Mn A. Gal-
braith and Mrs. Galbraith, at the old
homestead.
Roy Elliott accompanied by his
sister, Mrs. Frank Grieve and Mr.
Grieve, Seaforth, are visiting their •
sister, Mrs. 3. Ferguson and family,
Sudbury, this week.
Mr. James Stephenson was renew-
ing acquaintances In Hensall Tuesday,

William H. Lobb Passes—
One of the best known citizens of
the district died early Sunday morn-
ing in Clinton hospital in the person
of William H, Lobb, in his 85th year.
NIr. Lobb was active in municipal life
in Goderieh Twp, all his life and for
some years had served as reeve. At
the time of Isis death he was a mem-
