SMOKEY SAVED DROWNING 'M -ASTER
J. T. Donaldson, of Atlanta, Ga., owes his life to his dog, Smokey.
The caninerescuer held Donaldson's head above water when the
automobile in which he was riding plunged into a creek. Another
passenger in the car, Ben W. Noyes, was drowned. Deputy Sheriff
Julian Peacock looks on as Smoky joyfully greets master.

Levant Files Demand

French mandates in the strategic

Famine In India'
According. to the latest reports
of the food situation in India fail-
ure of the monsoon—the seasonal

—in December and January pro-
duced a drought in the Madras
district more severe than can be

Harvest in one of the worst -hit
districts in the 1942 and 1943 Ben-
gal famines, was only one-sixth of
normal.
The food minister in the Indian
Government said that unless In-
cia's food resources are conserved
"we shall not be in a position to
fight the demon of starvation two
months hence."
Scrap 6,000 Planes
Six thousand 'planes which cost

scrapped by the United States

considered militarily obsolete and

The United States government
last week made ready to takeover
operations of the tugboat system
in New York's big harbor as e
paralyzing strike tied up com-
mercial shipping. And meanwhile
New York's 7,500,000 residents
were cut off by the strike from an
estimated 80. per cent. of their fuel
supplies and nearly half their food
supplies. There was an estimated'.
week's supply of each on hand.

but wer're able to teach then pro-
duction methods in a very short
time," said Mark Gross'son of
plant owner S. Gross, "Of course,
if they want to stay in the busi-
r,ess and become all-round men,
they'll have to work quite a while."

by the veterans will stand up
against any in the world,", Mr.
Gross said.

in Canadian cash is represented in this Hereford. Jack Smith
delivered it to the,Stouffville herd of George Rodanz, Toronto, Ont.
New world's record was established when Mr. Rodanz bought the
bull, Del Zento I, at an Oklahoma auction. Rodanz, 37, started his
career trucking produce from Stouffville to Toronto.
