Short Course Classes.—Friday, Jan.

'Horne Economics oonducted by the
local Department of Agriculture,
Clinton. Thi 5 course wa.,5 attended to
the number of 25 boys and 40 girls
daily. Besides these, a ttarge num-
ber of Visitors came to the Course
particularly in 'the afternoons to take
advantage of the different leetttres
and demonstrations. Courses such
as these have become decidedly popu-
lar in the majority of rural com-
munities and while their purpose is
the dissernination of agricultural and
household information, yet the social
activities carried an by the organized
classes in after years are highly im-
portant results. It is to be hoped
that successful Courses of this nature
will be held ie other parts of the

Dear Editor: I was sorry to hear
of the .death of Mr, Holmested, of
Seaforth; Mrs, Gardiner, of Walton,

The lady who swain the English
channel last year is 'here for -a visit
and there is quite a fuss being made
over her. I think she is an Ameri-
can, Mrs. jemey Yining and her
sister Isabel and a friend, Johnny
Walker, all left for California last
week, They were conveyed to the
atation in the ear of Mayor Foster.
The former is the mother of George
Young, the swimming champion,
who has been so much in the pnblic
eye recently. Parliament opens on

Three times below zero here so far
this winter -17 below last Wednes-
day. Fnactures of wrists and ankles
are an every day occurrence. I have
escaped so fare thank goodness. I am
informed that there was a' wild time
on Queen street, a block west of the
city hall one afternoon last week. A
couple of Servian gypsies who posed
as phrenologists and palmists at-
tracted a number of roughs and
toughs from Eastern gurope, as well
as some British born vagabonds.
Beer -and gin was brought in. Little
children of one of the women ran
Screaming out on the street and it
big crowd soon gathered, which filled
Queen street °for a block. Some one
turned in a fire alarm and phoned
for the police. Police from the Mot-
tles west station soon arrived, as well
as a Bre brigade. They found men
and women fighting all over the house
and in the baek yard one Russian
amazon hadeknocked do -4n three men
with her bare .fists. The screaming of
the women and shocking profanity of
the men was something terrible. Two
stoves had been upset in the melee
and a fire was just starting but the
fieemen had little to do. One woman
was left to take care of the children
end the other 20 were piled into
dragons and taken to police stations.
Next morning in police court they
got 'what was coining to them,

Thursday Sessions.
The report of the county valuators
Was the main matter discussed at the
Wednesday morning session of the
county coun.cil. et was on a motioa
to go into committee of the whole to
consider the 'report that Dr. Milne,
Reeve of Blyth, objected tO the mat:
ter being discussed, on the -ground
that the appointment ofthe valua-
tors was illegal, the resolution of the
council having been that two rural
and one uoban valuator be appointed.
The proceeding being illegal it was
useless to discuss the report.
The council, however, event into
c.ommittee, and' Reeve Sanders, ef
Exeter, said that the aggrieved mu-
nicipalities which 'felt they were not
'fairly treated in the valuation had de-
cided their only course was to ap-
peal to the county judge or take ad-
vantage of the !further provisions ,of
the aot. It would be -more than use-
less to discusthe valuation, as there
were differences of viewpoint, As
sample of some valuations he cited
the case of an urban property valuat-
ed tit $2,500 by the cieuety valuators,
which was bought some years ago
Lir .$550 arid the owner would be glad
today to take $800 for it, .
Reeve Geiger, of Ilensale, who -was
tnember .of the Warden's committee
which appointed Mr, McQuillan when
the orightel urban representative re-
signed. said he had stood out for the
carrying out the motion passed by
the council and the appointment of
-an urban man, aild any other course
was illegal.
Warden McKibbon, of Winghem,
said he had tried in Wingham to get
a man to act as valuator :and Mr.,
Muttnings had tried itt Goderich but
a inati could not be got to act for the
price the county was paying.
Mr. +Johnston, Reeve of West 'Wa-
wanosh, said he was ,prepared to ac-
cept the valuators' report thotigh his
township was raised by it,
Dr. Milne said to adopt the valtia-
tors' report would mean the wipirig
out of a small village like Blyth ,prac-
•tically, Twenty-five years ago it 'haci
a population of 1,210, now only 635.
There was nothing for the people to
,riet and the population was gone ancl
yet the vatuators' report increased the
rating of property very considerably:
Finally it WAS' moved by .141essrs.
McEwen and Hayes that the council
adopt the valuators' report as pre-
sented .and a 'bylaw be passed eon -
firming the 'same, and making the 'fig -
tons contained in said report tlte basis
of equalization for county purposes
for 1927.
