Our Publit schools opened Mon-
day and the continuation school on
Tuesday, all the. pupils going back
prepared to do a good year's work.
The holiday passed quietly in town,

Mr, and Mrs. A. J. Sweitzer, who
have been visiting over the holidays
here, returned to Detroit on Wednes-
day.
A watch night service was held in
St. Paul's Anglican church on 'Friday
evening last, to see the old year out
and the newyear in.
The' wedding of Miss Gladys Petty,
youngest daughter of Mr, and Mrs,
Geo. C. Petty of 'H•ensall, to Or.
Gordon LeSinith, of St. Marys, took
place on Now Year's morning at the
residence of the bride's parents, Rev.
Mr. Naylor officiating. Dr. and Mrs.
Smith left immediately on a short
honeymoon trip, after which they
will make their home in St. Marys
where the doctor has been practising
dentistry. Mrs. Smith will be greatly
missedby the village, where she has
always taken an active part in social
and church work, and has also acted
as organist in St. Paul's Anglican
church for this last twelve years.
Mrs.- A. Coxsworlh spent New
Year's with relatives in London.
Mrs. John Wilson, who has been
confined to her room for a nuinber
of weeks, is able to be around again.
The meeting of the Young Peo-
ple's League of the United Church
was held on Monday evening, with a
good attendance' present. The meet-
ing was in eharge of Mrs. Lee
Hed-
den and presided over -by Miss J.
Buchanale The meeting was opened
by the singing of a hymn, after
Which all repeated •the Lord's pray-
er. The Scripture lesson was read
by Miss Marion Passmore. The
topic on "Obedience," was very ably
given by Mr. Sinclair. Readings by
Miss .Gladys Luker and Miss Mettle
Ellis, instrumental by Miss Irene
-spptigliss and a diet by Mrs, A. Joynt
and Miss Margaret Johnson were all
well rendered.

Elder, over the week -end.
Miss Nettie Pepper has been en-
gaged as teaCher of the Varna Public
•,school, and commenced her duties on
Jan, 3rd.

the holidays with their parents, Mr.

end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Mrs. E. Pines, of Clinton, spent
Monday with friends in town.
Quite an excitement was caused in
town on Monady evening when word
was sent in that the barns of William
L.'Green, of the 3rd concession of Tuck-
ersmith, were on tire. The new fire
• department were called on and with
their nevi engine made a quick run
• to the scene of the fire and immedi-
ately began work and kept the flames
from spreading to adjoining buildings
'but owing to the lack of water were
". unable to save the main buildings; If
water had been available the large
horse stable could have been saved.
The newly elected council all went to
the scene of the fire and were particu-
• larly pleased with the work of the
fire engine and especially Councillors
Robert I-liggins and James Priest of
• the old council who put up the fight
last year for better fire protection for
the village. Mr. Green's loss will be
heavy, but luckily most of the stock
-were saved. The barn was otie of
the finest in Tuckereinith township,
. hut Mr. ,Green, Waving- a splendid
bush of his own, will be able to re-
place it.

An old •tinie fidd'lers' contest was
put on in the town hall on Monday
evening, a number of the olcl veterans
in thisdistrict taking part, A large
number were present and were great-
ly interested in the contest, One of
our oldest residents in town, Mr,
Robert Bonthron, toolc first prize in
step dancing and Lee Plalden second.
Mr. and Mrs, ,Lemonn of Ripley
have moved to town and are occupy-
ing the parsonage. Mr. Lemon in-
tends going into business here.
The checks for payment for the of-
ficials in the recent Provincial elec-
tion have arrived and Mr. Robert
Higgins, the election clerk Inc South•
Huron, is sending them out to those
entitled to them in the south half of
the riding.
On Monday afternoon I-Iarry Cook
met with with a painful accident
while coasting on Stewaree hill, a
mile. east of the village. He fell froin
his sled while travelling at a high
speed and cut his knee seriously on
the ice. 'Dr. Fletcher, of Exeter, and
Dr. Dougall, of I-Iensall, worked for
several hours to stop the flow of
blood, and a number of stitches were
required to close the wound.
Mr. and 'Mrs. A. W. Whiteside, of
Goderich, visited friends in town on
S'slonday.
On Monday evening the hockey
boys went to Zurich, the score being
7 to 4 for the home team. The
locals took the lead early in the first

Miss Izetta Merner returned to
New Dundas on Monday and Merton
Merner to techical school at London.
Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Jowett and
Grace, who are spending the winter
in London, were in the village a few
days last week, also Miss Ethel Jow-
ett, who is teaching school at 'Brechin
Miss Jessie Metcalf who spent
Christmas with her parents, Dr., W.
F. and Mrs. Metcalf, returned to De-
troit on 'Saturday.
Miss Rtith Higgins of London,
spent the New Year week end at ber
home.
' Mr._ Nesbit Woods returned on
Monday to Wellesley.
Miss Jean M. Woods returned to
Orton on Monday,
Miss H. Gerrie, who spent the
Yuletide vacation at her home in In-
gersoll, returned to the village on
Monday.
Misses Elva and Ann Dewar and
David Dewar returned to Toronto on
Monday afternoon.
Mrs. Weir of London is the guest
of her sister, Mrs. J. Tippet.
Miss Nina Heard returned to Kit-
chener on :Monday morning.
Misses Anna, Betty and Gwen El-
liott, returned to Toronto, having
spent the vacation at their home.
Messrs. Alex. Living -stone and Win.
Knox of Toronto, who are here for a
few days on a hunting trip are visit-
ing with Mr. W. Sturgeon.
Mr, James Cameron, who was
called home last week on account of
the illness of his mother returned to
Toronto on ,Monday. We are pleas-
ed to report that Mrs. Cameron is
improving nicely,
Mr. A. E. Featherstone of Naicant,
Sask., arrived this week and is visit-
ing Mr. Chas. Parker,
Miss Maud 'Stirling, matron of the
General and Marine Hospital, Owen
Sound, spent New Years with her
mother.
Mr, George Howard of Regina,
Sask., is visiting his mother and rela-
tives.

The box social held on New Year's
eve by L.O.L. 24 was very well at-
tended and enjoyed. In progressive
euchre the prizes were won. by Mrs.
Gemeinhard and Mr. George Wes-
ton, The sale ,of boxes followed, and
after lunch the rest of the evening
wassspent in dancing.
Mr. Samuel Eagleson of Milton,
N.D., is visiting relatives and friends
here.
at is. with deep regret we report
the sudden death of an esteemed resi-
dent, Thomas IR. iBrownett, which
occurred on Wednesday of last week
at the Clinton hospital. His death
was clue to an accident, which tbefell
hint in the woods on Monday after-
noon when a branch of a falling tree
struck him, fracturing his skull, caui-
ing concussion of the brain from
which he really never regained con-
sciousness. Medical assistance was
secured as soon as poesible but on
Tuesday afternoon after a medical
consultation, it was decided that an
operation would be the only hope of
recovery: He was removed tor[the
Clinton:hospital where the operatien
was perfortned. For a time he seem-
ed t� improve, but early, Wednesday
morning his condition becaine worse
and he passed. to the Great ReYend

XIPPEN.
Holmes - Blair. — A marriage of
much more thin ordinary interest :to
a great number of .people in this vi-
cinity was solemnized in St. Andrew's
United Church, Kippen, .an Wednes-
day, December twenty-ninth at eleven
o'clock. a.m. The contracting panties
were Mr. Andrew Harold Holmes, of
Detroit, son .of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew
Holmes, Bluevale, and Miss Mary
Agnes Blair, of Detroit, youngest
daughter of the late Benjamin Blair
and his wife, Elsie Cooper Blair, who
at one time lived hereit was pecule
iarly fitting that this young lady
should come back to be married 'here
for her relatives on both father's
and mother's side have been for many
years and tare yet staunch members of
this church. The church was ,beauti-
fully decorated for the occasion with
spruce branches laden with cones.
From standards wreathed with spruce
swung white bells and pulpit and or-
gan were banked with bloom cycla-
men, schizanthus cineraria and pri-
mula. A large company .of eelatives
and ;friends witnessed the ceremony,
performed by Rev. R. A. Lundy.
The bride, charming in her gown of
rose georgette and velvet and carry-
ing a beautiful ,bouquet of Madam
Butterfly Roses with white narcissus
and maidenhair fern, was given away
by Mr. IRobt. Elgie. 'Mrs. Lutidy at
the organ and Gilbert Jarrott with
violin played the wedding music and
a full choir sang, "0 Perfect love"
during the signing of the register.
After a host of friends had offered
good wishes and congratulations the
bridal party, consisting of close
friends of bride and groom, repaired
to the home of Mr, and Mrs, Robt.
Elgic where in the genial atmosphere
of this very hospitable home a sump-
tuous wedding .repast was enjoyed.
Speeches ands .toasts followed and
then Mr. and Mrs. Holmes left by
motor Inc their home in Detroit.

and father of the groom and Miss

Miss Mary MoNaughton, of Sault
Ste, Marie, .who has been spending
the holidays at the home of her par-
ents, Mr. and Mrs, Jno, McNatigh-
ton, returned on Monday last.
Mr. Harvey MoClymont has re -
tinned home after visiting a week in
Chatham and London.
The fine barns on the farm of Mr.
Wm. Green were burned to the
ground on Monday night, together
with all the season's crop. A. new
binder and a large quantity of clover
seed. How the fire originated is un-
known, as Mr. Green had just finish-
ed choring, when he noticed it in the
straw mow, and it had gained .such
headway nothing could 'be done, ex-
cept to get out the live stock, which
was almost all saved. Mr. and
Mrs. Green have the sympathy of
the community in their loss.
Mrs, Jas. MeClyenont spent the
week -end in London.
Mr. Warren Shelbie had the mis-
fortune to lose a valuable work horse
one day this week,
Mrs, 'rhos. Dayman and children
are holidaying in Detroit ,at present,
Mr. Rabe McNatighton, of Them-
esford, who has 'been spending his
holidays at his home, has returned.
,Mrs. R. ,Geoghegan, of London,
and Mrs, V. McClymort, of °Detroit,
were visitors at Mrs. Tas, McCly-
mont's the past week.
• Horticultural Society. -- All mem-
bers of the Kippen Horticultural So-
ciety are cordially invited to the an-
nual meeting of the Society to be held
in the school room of StAndrew's
United Ohurch on Monday es -ening,

his school in Ottawa after spending

• A pleasant surprise party was held
at the home of Mr. end Mrs. Edgar
Allen, who wererecently 'married,
when 75 Heeds and neighbors gath-
ered at their 'mine on. New Year's
eve, Mr.'Whitinore read an address
and Messrs' Arthur Nicholson and
Dave McLean made the presentation.
The merry crowd then proceeded to
dance out the old year and in the
new. ".
Mr, William Bell returned to Des
trek after spending a few days at
the 'home Of his parents, Mr. and Mrs.
George Bell.
Mr. and Mrd. Samuel Houston en-
tertained a number of 'friends to a
euchre and dance on Monday even-
ing.
