FIDDLERS' CONTEST
Cardno's Opera Hall was well fill
ed on Tuesday evening and the two
hours' program was thoroughly en-
joyed. Interspersed ,between the sev-
eral contests the McDougall-McKin
non •orcliestra. rendered selections,
coinic 'songs •-and dances by, Dave
Houston, of Kincirdine, and pipe •sel-
ections by John M0E.wing-, of (Pais-
ley; and Scotch song and story by
the Chairman, Hugh ,McDougall, • of
Tiverton, 'Whose children, Annie
'Bell •and Flora, sang several songs
in 'Gaelic. Although there were sev-
eral withdrawals in the contests, the
competition was' keen, each contest-
ant being wet! received.lby the audi-
ence, 'Following the contest an old
time dance was staged which 1W1111
well attended, the music being fur-
nished by the. McDougallsMoKinnbn
and the Royce orchidtras. The 'fol-

The annual lansiness 'meeting 65 the
senior W,M.S. was held in the selio61
room of First Presbyterian' 'church
on Tuesday afternoon. Mrs.:"F.. Hi
Larkin presided and conducted ;the •
devotional exercises. Encouraging re-
ports were read by the secretary sad,
treasurer and the secretaries of the
various departments. The society
during the year raised abont $500 for
missions, $100 of which was contri-
buted by the McKillop branch. 35
books were sent to a library in an iso-
lated place. There were 70 subscrip-
tions to the' Glad Tidings and 23.

BROKE THREE RIBS..
' iconstable William Gillespie is laid
up at present with three .broken ribs,
the result of a fall last Wednesday on
some ice oh the short cut behind the
public school. He went about as
usual for several days unaware he
had received more than a bruise by
his tumble, On Saturday the injury
'became very painful and ,he visited
the doctor, His many' friends hope
he will soon he able to besout *again
in his usual good health, Mr. Chas.
Ralph is substituting for him as con-
stable.

'WATCH NIGHT SERVICE.
The 'Young People's Society of
Northside United Church decided
that instead of bolding their regular
meeting on Tuesday. evening they
w.ould 'hold a watch night service on
the last •night of the old year, and
gave the congregation a very cordial
invitation to join them. 'A goodly
number accepted and assembled in
the .basement of the church about

consisted of community singing, and

spent in games and conversation.
