succeeded in securing equal represent-
ation with the clergy at the annual
Conferences.
Up 'to the union of the Methodist
with the 'Presbyterian and Congrega-
tional Churches last June, there was
in eac,h one of the Methodist Confer-
ences a body of men, known as the
Stationing Committee, and it is in
living memory when this committee
placed ministers according to the dic-
tates of its own judgment, and the
be-
ing sent received
e will of Heaven, isters as But
here again the people began to assert
themselves, and to demand a voice in
choosing wwito should minister to them
in holy things. Flenee the invitation
system carte into vogue in the Metho-
dist Church, and although each invita-
tion was qualified by the words
"subject to the will of the Stationing
Committee," yet, woe betide the
Stationing Conunittec if it failed to
honor the request of the inviting
Board.
Well, so much for the organization
of 'these church conventions and for
the changes that have taken place in

This year the new United Church
of Canada is holding its first Confer-
ences, and there may be some diffi-
culty in getting the machinery in
stttooth working order.
These annual gatherings afford a
welcome opportunity for the meeting
of old friends, for hearty hand grasps
and for joyful looking into old -dime
friendly faces, and for hearing voices
that, for a considerable period, have
not been heard,
While these gatherings are pleasant
outings for all, they bring strenuous
work to their official members Great
sheets of tabulated statisties have to
be carefully gone over and conclusions
drawn frau them as to the material
progress of the work, and knotty
problems present themselves for solu-
tion, so that it is no wander if these

meetings are composed in almost, if
not in, every case of an equal number
of ministers and laymen. 'But while
such is 'the case to -day, within 'living
memory, the Methodist Conferences
were composed entirely of ministers,
and thus, in view of the unchecked
power of its clergy, it was said of the
Methodist.church that while it was of
all churches,'the simplest in its theo-
logy, it was the oncost despotic 'fir its
government. This was in accordance',
with the spirit and disposition of the
little autocratic Englishman, John

As the years trent by, however, the
Methodist laity became restive under
this .clerical domination, and at last
