in Dumfries that Peter Pan was born.
Sir James revealed the .setcret of

On another occasion the curtain rose
on Barrie as a lady and another youth-

Barrie rose to the occasion. Putting

WIND AND RAIN ATTACK ROCKS
Elements Cause the "Eternal kills" to Ct'tisr'ble Away.

,lalnes'IIutbop, a doctor by profession, laid' the cornerstone of modern
geological thought when he declared that all changes in the earth's surface
,1n'list beexpiatesd in terms of such, forces es can now be observed at work.
He was born in 1726 and died in 1787.
Secrets of Science.
• By David Dietz.
The first agent which attacks the
rocks is the atmosphere. Its action Se•
both chemical and mechanical.
The structure of a rock. is a very
complicated affair, The elements
which compose the rock are first
united into a number of minerals.
These minerals id turn unite to form
the rook. Granite, for exa.Inple, is a
mixture of three minerals known as
quartz, feldspar and mica.
The oxygen, thecarbon dioxide and
the water vapor in the atmosphere
enter into chemical combination with
various minerals found in the different
rocks,
This action increases the volume' of
mineral matter in the rock. As a re-
sult strains are set up in the rock and
it cracks and .crumbles, justas iron
crumbles when it runts.
Temperature changes also hasten
the decay of the rocks. When the nun
shines upon a rock, the outer portion
Is heated and expanded. This sets up
strains inthe rock whioh •result in
large cracks. Temperature changes
between clay and night cause expan-
sion and contraction of rocks and con-
sequent cracking.
Certain products formed in rocks as
a result :of the chemical action of the
atmosphere are soluble in water. Con-
sequently when 1t rains • they are dis-
solved by the water, leaving the rock
in a Porous condition.
The mechanical work of the atmos-
phere is performed by the winds.
The wind blows the particles re-
sulting front the decay of the rocks
against the rocks themseives, thus
wearing them away stili further.
The falling rain oleo does a certain
amount of meohanical wearing down
of the ?Lice. ' '
The wind also serves ae a transpor-
tation agent, moving the products of
rock decay from one place to another.
The transportation of the linest`per-
tieles—dust—ie nearly universal. Much
dust is carried far out to sea, where
itfalls upon the 'water and settles
down upon the sea floor.
In the great eruption of the Kraka-
toa Volcano in the East Indies in 1888,
volcanic dust was carried all around
the world by the winds in 16 days.
The wind also rooves the larger par-
tieles .of rock decay known as sand.
Except in' the case of severe .wind-
etorms, It does not lift the sand into.
the atmosphere, but merely moves it
along the earth's. surface.
As 'a result of this, great sand hills
known as dunes are often formed.
'rheas are found along the eastern
coast of the United States to -day, and'
along certain parts of the coast of Eng-
land and continental Europe. Also in
tete arid regions of Kansas, Nebraska,
Colorado, Wyoming, Arizona and in
the Sahara and the vast planes of Cen-
tral Asia.
Dunes range from 10 to 300 feet Sn.
height. Due to the feet' that the wind
biiowe tate sand up one slope of the
dune and down the other, the dun -es
gradually shift their positions where
there are strong prevailing winds.
Frequently they bury fertile tends and
forests"beneath them as they shift
their positions.

The ground was hard, the air was
etild, my,road was lonely; I walked
