made his Home since the death of his
wife in Clinton eight years ago, with
'his son, Mr. J. Wellington Johnston,
residing on the homestead. hlr. John-
ston was a son of the late Mr. and
5lrs, 'Thomas J.olteston, pioneer resid-
ents of Varna. He was predeceased by
his wife, formerly is{iss Catherine
'Moffett, whose death occurred after
retiring to Clinton .from the home-
stead a short distance from Varna,
which had been their residence the
greater part of their married life. Mr,
Johnston 'had been tailing in health
for some m'on,ths. Surwivin,g are one
son and one daughter, Air, J. W.

Johnston, Goderich. The funeral,
which was largely attended was Held

Passing of John Edwin Sproat—Af-
ter am illness of two weeks' duration
the death occurred early Friday mor-
ning in 'his 412nd year, of john Edwin
IS,proat, second son of William Char-
ters Sproat and the late Janet. Gem-
mel]. 'Sproat, Mr. ,Sproat contracted a
severe cold 'which later develo'ped into
pneumoinia. A private service was held
aft the family residence at 1.30 Sunday,
conducted by Rev. .E. F. Chandler o'i
St, Andrew's Church, ,Kippen, and in-
terment took p'l'ace in 1Rodgervi'tle
cemetery, Hensall. Surviving are his
widow, )Mary Yuddeil; one daughter,
Janet; his father, two brothers, James
Earle and' 'Dr, William Charter
'Sproat, and one sister, Mrs. John, Ad -
len of North Bay.
W„MIS. day at St. Andrew's was
one o'f special interest, it being the
annual birthday party of the Auxili-
ary. The ladies of the B,ruce'fiel'd Aux-
iliary attended themeetingand put on
a very fine programme.. In the ab-
sence of the President, Mrs. Brem-
ner, Mrs. Chapman presided. The op-
ening devotional period was in charge
of the Kip'pen president, Mrs, Cooper.
The subject for study was "Educat-
ing a Fifth of the World.” taken from
chapter 1II., "Living Issues in China."
Those taking 'part were Mrs. -Chap-
m'an, Mrs, Moffatt, Mrs. Hazelwood,
Mrs. Aikenhead and Mrs. A. Mc-
Queen. Mrs. Baird ,gave the dev'o'tion-
al leaflet and Miss Bowey a leaflet
on "Why World (Peace" A piano and
violin ,duet by Miss 'Stackhouse and
Mrs. McBeath and -a solo by Miss

Little, presided. The meeting opened
by singing hymn 434, followed with

Scripture lesson was read by 'Mr. Ar-

the topic, "Watchm'an" was .given by
Mr. Toni Bla'nehard. The pastor, Rev.
Mr. Morrow, alos,'gave an interesting
talk. A reading "1 Will Be Good"
was given by Miss Olive: Pryce.

meeting closed by all repeating the

Woman's Missionary .Society accept-
ed the invitation ta attend the birth-
day parity of the Kippers .Auxiliary last
week. A 'pleasant and prolfitable after-
noon was spent. A number of the

'The anniversary .services were held
in the United Church, O'c'tober 2.9'th.
'The day being anideal one the audi-
torium was fitted to capacity at both
services. The preacher for the day
was Rev. Mr. Craik orf ,,Goderich,'who
preached two splendid 'sermon's which
were listened to with rapt attention by
the large congregation. T'he', music by
the choir under tube leadership o,f Miss
Murdoch, w-a's mu'c'h appreciated. The
voluntary offering' was in the neigh
