SE FORTH POPULATION
NOW STANDS AT 2,065
•
When Town Assessor William
Amens presented his roll for
194-9, Seaforth •Council learned
on Monday night that the popula-
tion of Seaforth is now officially
2;065, an increase of 94 over last
year.
The town's total assessment is up
by $320,115, an increase of 23 per
cent. This is -under the new equal-
ized county assessment plan which
went into effect here this year,
All members were present and
Mayor Keating presided.
Messrs. Keith Sharp and Frank
Sills Jr. were a deputation from the
Chamber of Commerce re street
signs for Goclerich street. Council
agreed to pay for materials and
painting, •at a cost under $100, the
C. of C. to do the erecting. One
street is being done for testing' pur-
poses, and if satisfactory other
streets will be marked in a similar
manner.
Fire Chief D'Orleon Sills present-
ed the final report for 1949, show-
ing two fires during' the year. He
believed the educative effort • of the
fire brigade is having some effect.
-Town Solicitor P. D. McConnell
was present and explained steps to
take re a bylaw for the community
centre, so the project will be eligible
under the Act for two grants from
the Ontario Dept. of Agriculture,
amounting to a total of $10,000.
'Under the terms of the Act, a
board to administer the community
centre must be appointed by council
consisting of seven members. Two
are to be members of the council,
named for one year, and five are to
be from outside council, to'hold of-
fice for two years. The council is
to give representation to organiza-
tions which contribute to erection
and maintenance of the centre. Any
vacancies are to be filled by council.
When Mn: McConnell explained
that Seaforth hes deeds to the land
surrounding the community building
and that, the building, upon comple-
tion, will be vested in the town,
councillors learned that the main
fair building, known as "the round
house", also became the property of
the town along with the land it
stands on.
It was explained that the old fair
building may be used to house the
freezing machinery for artificial
ice.
The matter of naming a board
caused some controversy. Reeve Sills

iicatton at the results of their reso-

ruary 24th of this year, -calling on
all Christian people throughout the
Presbytery, to refrain from unneces-

that, in his own township of Goder
ieh, Sunday work had been reduced
761/c this year,
The following resolution, present-
ed by Rev, J. iR. Peters, of McKillop,
was adopted; "We, the members of
Huron Presbytery, wish to go on re-
cord
e
cord as deploring the action of the
Town of Dresden in placing before
their citizens an issue, which has re-
sulted in a glaring case of racial dis-
crimination in Canada: We regret,
that the feeling has gone abroad,
that the churches were apparently
indifferent on this matter, which will
result in erecting a serious barrier
between the races involved, and that
a shadow has been cast upon Pro-
testantism all across Canada, We
sincerely hope, that no such issues
shall ever again be raised in our
country, and that' the action of one
small town shall not become a pre-
cedent for• other centres large or
small."
A motion was passed, strongly op-
posing commercial sport on the Sab-
bath.•
Sympathy was expressed to the
Chairman in the loss of a brother.
