PA ,'MSAY St SON COMPANY for over 700 years "THE RIGHT PAINT TO PAINT RIGHT" Gs COMMUNICATION Report To Township of Tucker - smith on Progressive Conservative Convention in Toronto As the only voting representative from the township I would like to re- port the convention as I saw it. It was the first convention of its kind that I had ever a t t'e n d e d, though I recall almost twenty years ago as a teen-ager,' a journey to London with Glenn Hays, the pre- sent Crown Attorney of Huron, to hear Denton Massey and Gordon Graydon at a party conclave. In our youthful minds were formed lasting impressions ,of polities and particu- larly of these two men. Not many years later I came un- der the influence of Denton Massey and his York Bible Class and inci- dentally, I am now more convinced than ever that if our parties are so much 'concerned with our youth they should be doing more than they apparently are to organize the youth of this country. The convention was a tonic to everyone, affording party leaders and followers an opportunity to meet each other and to see at first hand the fruits of years of organization. It was a privilege to meet Frost, Porter, Blackwell and Roberts, and I was much impressed by the energy each was expending in his campaign effort to win the leadership. It was good to see Elgin McKinley our pro- gressive candidate for Huron Perth, making himself familiar with the party leaders, an invaluable way to learn the know-how that is a require- ment of leadership. To the readers of this article, whether C.C.F., Liberal, Socialist' or P.C., from the speeches of leaders at this convention or prominent leaders of Canada and those coun- tries belonging to the western bloc, it is obvious that communism and socialist trend to -day have reached alarming proportions. While in Tor- onto I talked to C.C.F. party mem- bers who believe that in Toronto at least the next electjon will be a straight, bitter contest between the C.C.F .and Tory parties. The old line party way of thinking seems to be a thing of the past. In our present clay world of practical thinking, 'the individual is doing more for himself than ever before, and rightly so, for modern democra- cy declares the importance and con- sideration of the individual to be paramount. The leader therefore, be - "Fixers" Exposed by Dan Parker Ace sportswriter, Dan Parker, turns the spotlight on big time gamblers who are busy giving sports a bad name by throwing games and corrupting athletes. MOORE'S POULTRY FARM Seaforth, Ont. Telephone 666-3 Members of Ontario Approved Hatchery Association comes more important than ever. In. Leslie Prost we have not only a ca- pable, energetic new premier, but a man whose personality has an ap- peal for all. To the women I would like to point out the important part played by yourselves at the convention. Mr, Frost has a wife who possesses great natural qualities. She was the centre of attraction wherever she went, making countless friends and imp - pressing all she met with her belief and faith in her husband. Another characteristic of this able woman is her descent from very Irish ancest- ors, to this writer at least, a faet that seemed no handicap. We all the know the reputation enjoyed by the charming Mrs. Drew whoseovation when she spoke at the women's meeting was a testimony to her great popularity. We cannot overestimate the, importance of wo- men in politics—they have been the source of inspiration of great men through the centuries, and their in- fluence will not lessen in the future. Out of all the writings we scanned about the convention, few made the impression of a short column of J. V. McAree in the Globe and Mail. " It seems to us to -become leader of the Progressive Conservative Party, and thus premier of'Ontario,– is rather a curious ambition. Yet it is a goal strenuously sought byesev- eral. There is no money in it, or at least not so much money as the leader and premier could earn by other means. There is certainly some sort of public honor in it but the man we admire is the roan who seeks private honor. " The premier will be denounced and covertly insulted by his politi- cal enemies. He will be praised ful- somely by his political allies. Nei- ther of these can add to the self- respect of a decent man. He will have considerable authority over the lives of a great many other people. Who would seek such authority? Why should any rational man want to become the arbiter of others' for- tunes? "If he is an evangelist or a pro- phet, it might be that he covets the position in order to save the people. But the people do not need saving. The new premier will sacrifice most of his home life. He will have to smile when he feels like swearing. He will live in an atmosphere which most normal men would find suffo- cating. He will eventually be expel- led from office with contumely. Un- less he is a Mitch Hepburn he will not have much fun. The time will come when he will, in all probability, curse his political ambitions. Yet what would we do without this curi- osity who helps carry on our busi- ness?" To us it seems to reach the core of the matter and while it presents a bleak picture of our system of public life, we cannot fail to realize how much we owe to leaders such as Drew, Frost, McDonald, lisle y, Rowe, Massey, King, Pearson, •Gray- don, Church Macaulay, and Kennedy. These men are not evolved in the night like mushroors. BUZZ FINNIGAN Egmondville, Ont.
