People are beginning to suspect that

may even have reached the inner

-he never was much of a star. He
joined the Giants about mid-season
in 1944, getting into 47 games,.
mostly as a pinch hitter, In 1945
he took part in 121 games, hitting
,272 and cloutifig 18 homers, The
next Spring he reported to the
Giants' training camp, but failing
to get even an interview with Man-
ager Mel Ott, jumped to Mexico.
When he came back, after two
seasons down Mexico way, he was
promptly banished from organized
ball -for a term of five ygars-
which, for a player of Dandy's cal-
ibre, might as well have been life.

our humble opinion Organized
Baseball has beeii getting away with
something akin to - well, if not
murder, at least mayhem -for
many a long year. And were won-
dering if it will be able to do so
much longer,

- that the present situation would`
never have cropped up if. old Judge
Landis had still been in the driver's
seat. The Judge was an eminent
jurist long before he was a baseball
Czar and probably understood, as
well as •anybody else, just how
shaky are the underpinnings that
prop up that mighty structure.
Time after time the judge advised
club owners to settle cases such as
Gardella'a out of court rather than
risk having their one-sided con-
tracts come under- the unbiased
scrutiny of The Law - and de
clared -unconstitutional. ,But judge
Landis is gone- and in his place
they have "Happy" Chandler, who
can tie knots in Landis's record u
a gladhander and after-dinner
speaker -but who isn't fit to carry
his brief case for shrewdness and
ability.

baseball contracts null and void, and
make all the payers free agents.
Try and visualize the picture should
star players on poor -paying clubs be
at liberty to dicker with teams like
the New York Yankees or Cleve-
land Indians, It's too painful to
even think about -and as we've
almost come to the end of our space,
we shan't do so any more.

thought. Through the years we
have been in a position to see much
which intrigue us personally. In
the form of "Publicity" - on be-
half of Baseball, as well as what
gets printed in the papers, More
and more such stuff tends toward
publicizing- not what a guy does
-but how much he gets. Think,
yourself, of ail the pictures you've
seen recently about DlMaggio sign-
ing for a hundred grand -Lou
Boudreau signing for $75,000, and
to on and so on.
So, should the, Supreme Lourt
judges come to the conclusion that
Baseball is a business, who will be
to blame? Not the magnates, of
course, who foster such publicity.
It will all be -Danny Gar'della's
fault - Danny, who, wouldn't be a'
good boy and stay put when they
told hint` to go and stand in a corner
for going where he eould.get more
money for working at the only trade
he knew.
Hockey, of course, is quite differ-
ent -although we seem to recall,
faintly, sums like a hundred thou-
sand dollars and the name of Mao -
rite Richard being bandied about in
she sports columns not so long ago.
