Mr. and Mrs. Tom Watson of Lon- don with Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Ben- nett Anniversary services were held in Bethel United Church, McKillop. A large crowd attended both services. Special music was furnished by the choir, under the direction of Mrs. Leslie Bolton. Guest speaker for the day was Rev. William Mali, of Thames Road United Church , A large number of friends and neighbours assembled in Walton Community hall on Friday evening in honor of Mr. and Mrs. William Roe, newly -wets. The evening was spent in dancing to the music of Wilbee Orchestra, which was enjoy- ed by all. Just before lunch was served Mr. and Mrs. Roe were called to the platform by William Dennis, master of ceremonies. who read the address and Murray Dennis present- ed Mr. and Mrs. Roe with a purse of money. Lunch was served. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Murray of Long Lake, Man., recently visited Mrs. Murray's uncle and aunts, Mr. Ed. Davidson and Miss Bessie David- son, Mrs. Calvin Hillen and Mr. Hillen and fancily. Mr, and Mrs. Wallace Sholdice and son, of St. Catharines, with relatives. Mrs. Wm. Kearney in London. Mrs. Pat. Special music was given by the Hugh sisters, daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hugh, a Swiss family who recently came to this country, also solos by Miss Ruth Balzer of Mitchell, and Mr. Chas. Lightfoot of Stratford. Rev. Lederman gave an appropriate sermon. Bride And Groom Presented With Gifts On Wednesday evening a group of Hensall associates met at Miss Ellis' then proceeded to the home of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Glenn where a delightful social time was enjoyed in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Mervyn Hayter, recent bridal couple . who have returned home from their wed- ding trip. After viewing the beautiful array of china, linen, household furnish- ings, and wedding gifts, Mrs. B. Kyle, Mrs. D. Kyle and Mrs. Lillian Hyde provided entertaining contests. Miss Ellis contributed an interesting reading in costume. The guest of honour, formerly Miss Margaret Glenn, received the following gifts: a coffee table and what -not from the group of girl friends, a hymnary from the Even- ing Auxiliary and a clothes hamper from the Wolielo Class. She made a fitting reply. Delicious refreshments were served at the close, Mrs. B. Kyle, Mrs. D. Kyle, Mrs. Lillian Hyde, who arranged the affair were ably assisted by Mrs. Glenn and Mrs. Hayter. The monthly meeting of the W.M. S. of the Hensall United Church was held in the schoolroom on Thursday. The meeting opened with the Presi- dent Mrs. W. B. 'Cross presiding. Hymn "My Faith looks up to Thee". The devotional was taken by Miss Ellis followed by prayer by Mrs. Lammie. Mrs. Ed • McQueen read a paper on Temperance. The roll was called, 14 members and 1 visitor present. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted. Miss Ellis was appointed as a dele- gate to the W.M.S. Presbyterial to he held at Centralia Oct. 12th. Mrs, E. L. Mickle and Mrs. Manns were appointed on the lunch committee for November. Mrs. Fred Appleby contributed a beautiful piano solo. The United Church is celebrating the Golden Jubilee Anniversary this year and are making great prepara- tions for the event. ., On Sunday next the 17th Oct., The Rev. Harold Snell, Exeter, will be the guest minister, and on Oct. 24th, Rev. A. W. Gardiner, Egmond- ville, will be in the pulpit, and on Tuesday, Oct. 26 a grand turkey dinner will be served in the Com- munity hall Preparations are being made to serve 600 people in the same olid fashioned style as in the years of the past. The Church services will be at the hours of 11 am„ and 7:30 p.m. A good turn out is hoped for. Several ladies from this W.M.S. Society are attending the sectional meeting at Duff's •Church, McKillop, on Wednesday of this week. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Manning and family and Mis. Margaret Manning visited friends at Lucknow, Sunday. Miss Winnie Sav- auge has kindly consented to be our guest to demonstrate on weaving and leather handicrafts. The topic, hospitality in the home, will be given by Mrs. Jlugh McGregor. The roll call is to be answered by naming a factor to be a good citizen. Mrs. Eldon Jarrott will give the motto, `Events in Canadian History which. make me proud to be a Canadian". A contest will be conducted by Mrs. Ernie Whitehouse and Mrs. William Doig is lunch convener. STAFFA Staffa Women's Institute met at the home of Mrs. Roy McDonald on Wednesday evening with a good at- tendance. Mrs. Houghton, the vice- president, was in the chair. Roll call responses were answers to: "Who pioneered your home or farm?" A report was given of a bale of Moth - Ing weighing 20 pounds, and sent to Scotland to the Denny Institute. It was decided to send a CARE box of. lard to the same address this month, and a box of food and fruit later. Donations will be gladly accepted for the parcel Mrs. Lloyd Colquhoun, with Mrs. C. Plans were discussed for the next meeting, when. the branch will be guests of Mrs. Lorne Hodge, Crediton. who moved there this year from Staffa. Mrs. B. O. MacDonald gave a reading. Mrs. Duncan . McKellar, historical research' convener, eontri- buted an interesting account of the settling of Perth` county and the Huron Tract and: mentioned a num- ber of the first settlers around ,Staf- fa and Cromarty, among them the late John Whyte,founder of the Whyte Packing Co. . Ltd. Other names of early settlers were Parke, Legett, Gardiner, Hoggarth, and Hamilton. INITIATION IS FEATURE OF H. S. DANCE The first party and dance for this 1948-49 term at S.C.I. was held on Friday evening hi the auditorium of the High School, During this party the main feature was the initiation of this year's first formers. The evening's entertainment in- cluded novelty and modern dancing. Lunch was served by the red team, which was the losing team of the an- nual held day. During the course of the evening •Francis "Zeke" Huisser, the captain of the blue team, thanked the reds for their fine party and entertain- ment. Howard Hackwell, president of the Students' Council, thanked all who attended and helped to make the first party a success. The next party will be a costume party some time between Hallow- e'en, Oct. 29, and Sadie Hawkins Day, Nov.' 13.
