Rev. R. G. Hazlewood presided at
the first 1948 meeting of Duff's
United Church W.M.S.` In his short
address he told that iwas the W.,
M. S. that kept alive the missionary
spirit in today's churches. hie" spoke
of the great work being done in
mission fields and hospitals which
are helped by W.M.S. contributions.
Ile then conducted the installation
of officers for 1948, The regular
part, of the meeting opened with
surging of Hymn 28, followed by
prayer. Minutes of the last meeting
were read, The treasurer's report
was given and showed that we had
raised over six hundred dollars
during the past year. Supply secre-
tary read a letter asking for used
clothing to be sent overseas. Anyone
'who has good used clothing is asked
to see that it is given to Ml's. S.
Johnston on or before Feb. 13. It
wsa decided to hold the Feb. meeting

Varna United- Church - congrega-
tion held its. annual -meeting on
Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 13. Good
reports were given from all of the

its inaugural meeting Monday, Jan.
Lzth at 10 a.m. in the -twc ,bell,.
Varna, all members were present.
The 1948, Council is comprised of
Elmer Webster, Reeve; Alvin 'Mc-
Bride, Harvey Taylor, 'Harvey Cole-
man and Carl Houston, Councillors.
The. Clerk administered the oath of
office to the newly elected Connell
and they then proceeded , with the
business of the meeting, The min-

By -Law No. 2, providing for road
expenditures for 1948 to the amount
of 522,000.00 was passed. By -Law
No..8 appointing pound -keepers and
fence viewers was also passed. The
newly elected trustees of the P.V. of
Bayfield sat in with the council and
discussed mattes pertaining to mun-
icipal affairs. The twp. joined the
Ont. Good Road Assc. instructing
the Treas.' to forward the annual
fee of 55.00 to the treas. 'Gran'ts to
Bayfield cemetery: of $40;00 and to
the Salvation _of -'$25.00 were passed
and ordered paid. The Treas. was,in-
structed to apply to the Dept; of
Highways for the balance -of subsidy
on 1947 road'. expenditures. Road
Voucher, No. 1 for. 5987.02 and
general voucher for 5282.88 were
passed and ordered paid. Council ad-
journed to meet in the twp. hall,
Feb. 2nd at 2 p.m.

Miss Lucy Woods; -visiting and flow-
er committee, Mrs. Larson and Mrs.
L, Scotchmer; social committee, Mrs.

R. Bassett. The report of the trea-
surer showed a large balance to
start the year. At the close of the.
meeting tea was served by the host-
ess.
On Monday evening the newly
elected reeve and council of Stanley
township entertained -the electors at
a party and dance in the Town hall,
Bayfield, which was largely attend-
ed, The Bayfield Valley Five sup-
plied the music and a group of ladies
sold lunch. Everyone reports on hav-
ing an excellent time..
The meetings of the W,M,S, and
W.A, of St. Andrews Charch were
held on Thursday, Jan; 8 at the home
of. Mrs, Russell Grainger. A feature
of the W.M.S. meeting was the pre-
sentation of a Life Membership .to
Mrs. Colin Campbell from Miss. -A
M. `Stirling, who spoke of the great
importance of Missions •gnd the hon-
or of membership in a missionary or-
ganization. Mrs. Dewar read from
the Study book, "Great is the Com-
pany", a most interesting chapter
which' told the story of the transla-
tion of thescriptures, into languages
of the North American Indians.
The W,A. reported a balance. on'
hand over '5200. with all debts paid
to date. Plans were discussed for
the meetings during the coaling year
and also a collection of second-hand
-clothing to be sent to Western Eur-
one under a plan by the Canadian
Council of Churches. Donations may
be left at -the ,church on or before
Tan. 22, when the bale will_ be
Hacked. After, a lunch was served
by the 'hostesses for the day.
The death occurred in Goderich
Alexandra and Marine Hospital on
Monday, Jan. 12th, of Geo. Greens-
lade. Mr. Greenslade, who suf-
Annual -Meeting To Be Held
The annual meeting of the "con-
gregation of St. Andrew's United
Church will be held on Friday night
at 8 p.ni. Refreshments will be
served at the conclusion of the meet-
ing by the ladies. A good attendance
is hoped for. '
The account of the W.M.S. ap-
pearing in last week's issue stated
Mrs. Hinton had read a letter from
Mrs. Kirkby of Walton, Christian
Stewardship Secretary, stating her
resignation. This was an error on
the part of the correspondent,. Mrs.
Kirkby has not resigned her position
Marie Jarrott is spending a few
days with her aunt and uncle, Mr.
and Mrs. Hugh Love of Hensall.

Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Gackstetter
visited on Sunday with Mr: and Mrs.

fered a stroke a week ago at his
home, Blue ,Water Highway,, North,
and never recovered: He was born
in ,Ilay Township 76 years ago, and
lived- in that vicinity for a number
of years. He moved to Bayfield over
forty' years . ago where he operated
the, "River House" for a number of
years, later he had a Confectionary
store, he moved to Goderich twp,
28 years ago where he has since re-
sided. He is survived: by his wife
the former Cecilia Naftel. He was -a
member of the Canadian Order of
Foresters, Bayfield •Lodge L.O.L.
#24, and a member of Trinity Ang-
lican Church, Bayfield. He was also
the first secretary -treasurer of the
Library Board, a position he held
for twenty-five years.
