Mrs ,Reid is laid up with a couple of
broken ribs.
Car Takes Fire.—'D. Lediett's car
took fire while standing nn the street
at Win+gh•am the other evening when
'there was a short circuit in the . ba't-
-tery cable. Mr. Waine, of the Super-
test Oil Company, got the battery
•disconnected before the fire gat any
-start, .but the floor 'boards were slight-
ly burned and one of the battery posits
.burned off.
'Charged, with Reckless Driving.
.Mrs, Orville Beavers, of near Exeter,
was charged with ,reckless driving and
says she was going only at ten or
:twelve miles an hour, tOn :the charge
of driving without a permit a fine of
$10 and costs was imposed in the pol-
ice court at Goderioh. The reckless
striving charged was remanded for a
week. Mrs. 'Beavers had 'come out
of a laneway into the path of a fast
moving car, causing it to go into the
ditch as the driver of the car did not
see her in tithe,
Third Season with No Crop,—
"County ' Clerk G. W. Holman has
'just received a letter from 'his son,
'Wilmot G. Holman, of Moose Jaw,
in the dried out area, in which he
states that for the third year in suc-
cession he will have no crop, A splen-
did rain cane for three days last week
:but this is too late though it may help
to give them a little food for cattle
:and horses. He writes that he will not
have fifty bushels of wheat and oats
;this year.
'Mrs, Tom Marks Dies. ---Mrs. Tom
'darks, wife of one of the four Marks
brothers. well known to the theatrical
world of Canada, died iu the hospital
in Perth, Ontario, last week after a
long illness. Tom Marks retired from
the stage 10 years ago to the peace of
-the farm life on the old homestead on
Christie Lake, In his 45 years he play-
ed many parts, in drama, in comedy,
as an acrobat and singer of Irish bal-

the United States. Mrs. Marks was
formerly Miss Ella Brockenshire of
Wingham.
Funeral of Mrs. J. E,
ton friends friends were sorry to hear on Sun-
day of the death of Mrs. (Rev, Dr.)
J. E. Hogg, of Strathroy, tvhich oc-
'curred rather suddenly in the General
Hospital at Toronto, where she had
for some weeks been undergoing
treatment, a couple of operations has-
ing been performed in the hope of
saving her life. :Mrs, Hogg had had
a severe illness last year and all last
summer had been somewhat of an
invalid but her health had improved
.,o much that it was :naught that she
was on the way to edmpfete recov-
ery, until about the time the fancily
