On Wednesday last while Mr,
Fred Kennings was trimming the
trees in front of the resiclen,ce of Mr.
George Iaouglas, he slipped from the
tree where he was working, falling
about twenty-five feet, breaking both
arms at the wrists anti suffering in-
ternal injuries. Dr, Moir was imme-
diately called and rushed him to the
Clinton hospital for an X-ray exam-
ination, and the fractured arms were
set. He was brought home the same
evening and- is now getting along

Mr. Alexander Buchanan Sr. cele-
brated his 90th birthday on Monday.
He has been in poor health for some
time but is able to sit up a while each

The firemen of the village intend
holding their annual Christmas tree
on Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 23, com-
mencing at 2.30 when Santa Clans
will arrive in the village and have
something for every child in Hensall
and district. They have their tree up
in front of the town hall and it is
beautifully decorated by colored
ligh ts.
The Sunday school of the United
Church intend holding their annual
Christmas entertainment on Friday
evening, Dec. 19, and a good pro-
gram will be given
Christmas services will be held in
the local churches on Sunday; both
Inculling and evening, and special
inneic will be given by the choirs,

Riley and the late Chas. Riley

The large attendance at the funeral
af Dr, Chae. A. Howson Friday to
Ball's cemetery was a fitting tribute
e, the !sigh esteem in which he was
held. Deceased was born on 13th cone
Millet and attended S.S. No. 8 and
later tnok up stndy of veterinary sur-
gery, gradnating from Ont. Veterin-
ary College in 1889 and practised with
Dr. Perdue of Myth. The following
year he inured to Auburn and was
married to Miss Ethelwyn Asquith of
Hullett. In the later nineties he was
a large buyer of heavy horses for ex-
port and traveled to England in con-
nection with this trade. Later he en-
tered the sawmilling business and
for maty years he was in partnership
with Edgar Lawson, manufacturer of
large cmantities of maple rollers for
export to England, -After the de-
struction of their mill by fire about
ten years ago he retired from active
business. Nearly all his life he eri-
jeyed excellent health until two years
ago he suffered loss of eyesight by
the bursting of a small blood vessel,
Fortunately his strong constitution
aided hint .n bearing his affliction un-
til he entered into rest last Tuesday.
During his lifetime Dr, Howson held
many public offices and his services
were always marked by some tangible
improvement. He was a member of
the Hullett Council for 6 years dur-
ing which time the community hall
at Londesboro was built, the eastern
portion of the road on the con. 10 was
straightened and a stone crttsher pur-
chased, He served on the school
board when the present school was
re -modelled and on the village trustee
board when the first concrete side-
walks were laid in 1905 and when the
road to the new station was pur-
chased and built, He was a member
of Blyth Lodge A.F. & A.M. In poli-
tics he was a staunch Liberal. The
funeral which took place from the
Baptist Church of which deceased
was an active member was donduct-
ed by a cousin, Rev, Wm. Raithby.

the service Mr. Harvey McGee sang

were borne by Earl Raithby, Frank

by his widow and ,daughter Winnie,
also two sisters Martha (Mrs. Kank-
Mg) of Auburn, and Carrie (Urs.
Jaines McClay) of Chillierack, B.C.
and one brother, Robert of Pentic-
ton, 13.C.

con, motored to Toronto on Sunday.

A very interesting and profitable time
was spent. Rev, Mr. Johnston kindly
presided for the election of officers,
who were all re-elected except that
Mrs. (Rev.) Johnston was chosen
president and Mrs. Ernest Adams 1st
vice Pres. A social hour was spent
when a very delicious lunch was serv-
ed.
Quite a number from the commun-
ity attended the funeral of the late
Dr. Chas. Howson in Auburn last
Friday. He wascouncillor for many
years. Sympathy is extended to Mrs.
'Towson and Miss Winnifred. ,
Councillor Leiper was in Auburn
last Fniday.
Mr. and Mrs. A. Radford of the
10th con. have their son from Port
Colborne with them for a time.
Mrs. George Moon is spending
some days this week with her daugh-
ter, Mrs. 13. Hamilton,

Lawson, Leiper attended the Council
meeting at Londesboro on Monday.

A large crowd attended the pro-
gressive euchre and dance in the hall
last Friday evening, The first few
hours of the evening were. spent in
euchre. Ladies' first prize was tied,
Miss Eva Scarlett winning by a draw.
Ladies lone hand was also a tie, Mrs.
Clarke winning by a draw; men's
first prize was a tie, Mr. Adrian Hogg
winning by a draw; men's lone hand
prize was a tie, Mn. O'Connell win-
ning by a draw. Consolation prizes
went to Mrs. Frank Johnston and Mn,
Art Alexander. After lunch was
served, several hours were spent in

The many friends of Mrs. William
Britton 'unite together in wishing her
a speedy recovery after herrecent
operation in ,Clinton hospital.
We are glad to report that Mn.
Ben, Riley is improving after his re-
cent illness.
The W.M.S. held their annual meet-
ing in the church an Thursday after-
noon, Dec. 11. The meeting opened
with the use of hymn 314, followed by
silent 'prayer for Mrs. Wen. Britton.
This was to -flowed by preryer by MTS.
Robert Clarke. The minutes were
then read and adopted. The treasur-
er's report was given by Mrs. Wheat-
ley, Mrs. Robert Clarke gave an in-
teresting chapter otet ,of the new study
book. A duet, "Silent Night, Holy
Night," by Mrs, B. B. Stephenson
and Mrs. Leo Stephehson was very
much appieciated. The Scripture les-
son from 2nd Luke 8 -18th vvas reed
and commented upon by Mrs. C.
Dexter. A reading entitled, "It is
Christmas Wherever You Go," was
given by Mrs. E. Adams. The lase
