succesOlel sale of fine stock on Thurs-
day lest. There was a big crowdand
the bidding was good. Eight cows
and heifers reached as average of
over $100 ugh; 9 yearlings averaged
over $75 each, and spring calves went
as high as $50. ,Hogs brought good
prices too.' Geo. 91. Elliott wielded
the hammer in his usual efficient style.

Mr. Geooge Kirkby from Normal
School at Stretford spent the week
end at his home here.
Miss Anna McTaggart, who is
teaching pear Varna, visited With her
parents over the week end.
QUite'a number of friends and nei-
ghbors aesembled at the home of Mr.
and Mrs, Herbert Mantling on Mon-
day eveniog of this week. A good
time was spent with cards and danc-
ing.
Mr. 3. 3. lloGavin shipped three car
loads of stock to Toronto on Satur-
day, They were sold at a good pripe,
but Mr. McGavin foend that the mar-
ket was rather slow.
Mr. Gordon McGavin went to To-
ronton on Tuesday to attend the con-
vention of the Provincial Plowmen's
Association in the King Edward hotel
on Wednesday of this week.

way and hotel expenses. The letter
advised against audits -extending back
more than five years, as audits over a
lengthy period were of little value,
Records were .often not in goad con-
dition and officers when appealed to
were unable to remember the circum-
stances. If competent auditors were
appointed froth year to year the nec-
essity for a special audit 'disappeared.
In the case of a township in Huron
county in which a special audit was
held extending back to 1917 the cost
amounted to $2,5189.60.

cil of Hastings asking for an amerid-
ment to the statutes so thot the whole

roads was for travel and not for pow-

Mr, C. A. Robertson, MLA., was
present and, being invited to address
the council, congratulated the Ward-
en and inembirs on their election.
He said the Old Age Pension Act
would no deubt come in for amend-
ments and now was the time for the
county council to make its wishes
known. He thought the council
should study legislation and put their
conns clusioin the fogns of resolu-
tions. The cost of edecation had < in-
creased rapidly and grants de-
pended on the expenditures. If the
cotnity had to increase its expendi-
tures in* order to get increased grants
there was scarcely a limit to -the ex-
tent you might go,

and Mr. Irwin, an ex -Provincial .en-

that, whereas the work of the Old
Age Pension committee of the coun-
ty has to do with expenditures as fol-
lows: Dominion Govt., 50 per cent.,
PrOvinCe, 30 per cent, county, 20 per
cent., this council is of the opinion
that the expense of said committee

way in leeeping the boy or girl out of

The balance of the time of the
court is taken up with hearing quar-
rels between husband and wife and
between neighbors and a thousand
other petty quarrels between friends
which never come to a hearing in
Police Court and should neverif it
con possibly be avoided. This is the
stand I have taken. This branch of
the magistrate's work- is steadily
growing fram year to year and if it
continues at the present rate a dom-
estic relations court will have to be
established to ttake care of this most
impoftant branch of the work,
Of the 475 cases heard and dis-

Just by.way of comparison in the
year 1918 there was levied and col-
lected in the police court of the coun-
ty $714. At this time there were two
judges in the county and practically
all criminal cases were sent up for
trial. As 9 stated before there were
109 criminal, cases disposed of in pol-
ice court and tsvo out .of this 109 were
committed to stand trial at a higher
court, thus relieving the county of a
large expenditure in juries anti other
court at

oners committed in '1927 as follows:
Theft, 41; intoxicated, 21; assault, 9;
intoxicated with car, 8; having liquor
