HRISTM
St. Luke 201 --"Unto you is born
..,a Saviour, Which is Christ the
Lord,"
0610E again, we • -commemorate
the birth of our Lord and Mas-
ter, Jesus Oheist. , To -day we
commemorate the coining to a .world,
fallen and helpless„ of a long -looked
for Saviour•
Long ages before, this Deliverer
omi I
had been promised, In the Testa-
ment
of d you will again and again .find the
promises, No sooner ?ad the dark
night of sin, through the disobediepee.
of Adam; fallen upon the fair face of.
the earth which God had made very
good, than, like a lonely star shining
in the midn'igh't' sky, the promise• was
given that the seed of the woman
should bruise the head of• ,theser-
petit.
And as time went on, and God, at
sundry tithes and •in divers manners
sipake to his people by the prophets,
like stars coming mit one by one in.
the darkened heavens, promise added
to promise, made the light less dint,
and gave new' hopes and 1'ongin:gs to.
an expectant world,
;Generation after geneyation of men
passed away, having lived and acted
their part in the history of the world.
Centuries one after another rolled by,
and yet the proinised Sun of Right-
eousness arose not. At last "darkness
covered the earth and gross darkness
the -people" and few were found even
in the holy city, Jerusalem, who look-
ed for Redemption. But "when the
fulness:.of time was come, God sent
forth His own Son. So will it be
with the second coming of Christ. \Ve.
often find then asking "Where is the
;prom'ise' of Pbis routing?" 'But God
waits until "the fulness of the time"
shall come.
t Itt-
Tt has been well said by a tho tg
ful, writer, that Tite Divine Nature, as
it has eternity at its disposal, can
well afford to wait and be slow in its
working. It is for mortals to hurry—
for the creatures .of a day to be in
haste, but it is, far the Eternal to move
on with the measured slowness which
we see connected with every law of
the globe on which we tread. For in-
stance how slowly and softly falls the
breaking of the day. How'gentle the
twilight 1 II -Door 'gradually do the
spring' and auttsmuthe winter and
summer, come. and'.go 1 They are
never in a' hurry, they are never ata
tiottary,' ,and yet yop can hardly see.
their movement, They blend together
slowly, beautifully, majestically, So
is it with the affairs of the spiritual
!world -and the glories of the new
.birth. It took centuries of waiting
and training to; bring the marvel of
;God made .man itt the birth of the. Sa-
viour. But "the Lord is not slack
concerning His promise," though He
carries forward His mighty designs so
slowly. And as the Almighty One is
never hasty or in a hurry, so it is
written that "he that believe'th (in.
Him) shall not make haste." It is
for the doubter to make haste, not the
:believer. Faith is always• ce'lnt: it is
skepticism that is uneasy. And so,"
it this
if we have -gone in the s n t i
P
morning to Bethlehem, and seen this
thing whichis come to pass, which
the Lord hath made known unto us"
:and have come thence believing, we
can well afford to wait quietly for the
salvation of the Lord.
How calm was that hallowed` night,
when the Saviour of mankind was
born: we can picture to ourselves the
,little town of Bethlehem lying still
and quiet .under the silent "watchers
of the sky"—the stars, all unconscious
of the most important event that ever
took place is the world, 1 -le the only -
begotten of the Father, the. Bread of
Life, had comedown from Heaven,
and 'Bethlehem, his. destined birth-
place by prophecy and by name, can-
not give Him even the shelter of an,
inn. Silently, quietly the wonderful
event took place. -How little that vast
crowd of Jews who had conte togeth-
er for enrollment, lcnew of the mighty
marvel which had taken place in their
midst, How great, .how .passing our
knowledge, was• that birth. A tiny
tittle Babe cradled'in a.. manger is "the
Mighty God, the Everlasting Father,
the Prince. of. Peace," Tltat infant is
Very Word of God, who was "in .the
'beginning; who was 'with God, who is
God—by whon,,all things were made."
And yet how simple all'the surround
ings of that wondrous Birth. A vil-
lage maiden bending over her Babe.
Around, -the weary travellers with the
;beasts of burden; the Manger cradle,
the silent stars; ttie green slopes, the
touching shepherds! 'White all things
I
are in quiet and silence, Jesus Christ
conte to man, But at that moment,
though Ito voice spake;to the crowd in
that place, it did to the shepherds
silently watching, The solemn stili -
tress of night was broken around them
by a voice; upon the tender gloomm of
the starlight there 'burst forth a glory
of celestial light. - But instantly the
re -assuring words of that angel voiee
calm their fears. "Fear not: for be-
hold I bring you good tidings of
great joy." With bated breath, and
iieacls bowed in reverent awe, the
shepherd's received the joyful message
of the herald angel; and with what
rapture they must have listened to the
angel choir as they sang' thti't first
Christmas anthem, "Glory to God itt
the highest, and on earth peace,
good -,will to men."
As soon as the angels disappeared,
the shepherds hastened to see the holy
+Babe lying in e manger, and having
seen Him, they im'inediately became
the first to spread the Gospel which
had come so wonderfatlly to them-
selves,
Few indeed, eau read the account of
the Saviour's birth, so simply and
beautifully told by St, Luke, with a
heart unmoved.
;Fernlike as the fact is totis, the
glad tidings brought by the angel her-
ald that "unto us is born aSaviour,,
'I
.Christ the Lord,"c_au • a fresh spring

of joy t0 burst up in each heart, that
has felt the burden of sin, and the
need on one "Mighty to Save'
Our ears .can not hear the music of
the angels of Hint: who brought the
message, and of that multitude that
poured forth the chorus of praise, but
there is music in the very words
to [ill the heart with unspeakable joy.
And the very name, Jesus, Saviour, is
,as the melody of Heaven to the ear
that feels that without Him there is
no hope of Salvation.
10, 'happy the assurance each Christ-
mas renews and brings again to all
those who .".
eep all these things and
ponder, them in their heart;" happy
those who can hail this—season not
merely -like the worldly, with no aim)
'beyond feasting and merry -making
but with the thankful joy of those
who have found One mighty to save
-froth. sin, And so it is like a cruel
mockery- to wish anyone a happy
Christmas, save in the deepest and
only true sense of happiness. No
man -or woman can be truly happy
who knows in his inmost heart that he
has never taken Christ as his Saviour,
,and so 'has still on his conscience the
'heavy burden of sin unforgiven.
Christ was born as man at this time
that God might once more be recon-
ciled to mankind. God gave His
;Son as the- Mediator. This then is
particularly a time when all envy and
i lafeeling of one with another should
forever e be buried from sight. :het no

happy home gatherings, warmed not
alone with the glow of earthly love,
but where Jesus sits a welcome and
honored guest, where every rude or
unkind.word is silent before His pres-
ence, there and, 'there only can true
joy be found,
'Corning to us in this int'iutate un-
ion with our common humanity, com-
ing with his direct recognition of our
home affections; coming to .us in the
pages of the Bible and in the realities'.
of His Sacraments; in His Love, and,
in. •the depths of His humiliation; Je-
sus Christ takes us all captive, at
,least for the • moment, by the beauty
and the Targetless of His gift to us, if
not by the sense.: of our utter need of
,Him, and of the mighty strength of
'H•is salvation.
'No mere historic faith in such ,i Sa
viour..10 partial turning of our hearts
to Him will avail, As our Heavenly
:Fattier, out of the tender pity. of His
love, has "given us I -Tis only begotten
,Son to take our stature upon Him, and,
its at this time to be born of a pure
virgin," let us devoutly and earnestly
pray 'that we, being regenerate and
made HIS'. children by adoption and

Holy Spirit.",

WINTER 1929. '
(With apologies to Tentlyson.)
Half a mile, half a mile,
Half a mile onward, • .
Twenty feet, twenty feet downward,
Up through the batt'. a,t snow,
!Plunge into drifts we go,
N'ot but the people knex,
The weatherman hod
blundered.
Snow to the right of tltent,
ISttow to the left of them,
Snow piled itt frons of then,
Theirs not to make reply/
Theirs not to reason' why,
Theirs but t•a .freeze and die.
Flashed alt their shovels bare,
Ont through the frosty air,
icicles hung every where,
Trees hung with icy glare,
No sign 4i thaw in the air,
- - No sun far Bruin to stare.
So he went back to 'where
Storms are unknown,
Where are those prophets bright,
""-IltlThat sage is always right,
Why will they not keep quiet.
IO•h, the wild things they said,
All :the world read them.
When will the sun came out
And break the winter's snout,
