Tuesday's Mail and Empire con-
tained the following: "Fifty years
Married to -day 1 And Mr, and Mrs. D.
L. Thomson of 501 Annette street will
celebrate their golden wedding at
home. At noon there will be a fam-
ily dinner—children and grandchildren
assembled together to wish them well.
In the afternoon and evening a recep-
tion will lie held, when old friends will
gather together to talk of old days,
Half a century ago on this very day
in the little town of Hensall, Ontario,
Fenny Illatcliford, daughter of John
Bratchford, became the bride of D. L.
Thomson, There was a bridesmaid
and best man—Mary Blatchford and
George Brown, .To -day they are Mr,
and Mrs. George Brown and. they live
in Hensel]. The wedding was held in
the morning—n crisp; October day.
Rev. S. J. Allin perforined the cere-
mony.. And afterwards there was a
ride in a horse • and buggy to town
forty miles away where the honey -
m000 was spent. The leaves were
gorgeously colored mi dthe tang of
fall was in the air as the newly -
married couple jogged along on their
way. Looking across the years to
that morning of October 29, 1878, Mr.
and Mrs. Thomson view their *mar-
riage in a happy light. And while
there weren't moving 'pictures and
high-powered sports cars the youth of
that period enjoyed themselves. "Did
tbe young people in your day have a
good time.?" Mr. Thomson. was ask-
ed. The still -young brown eyes twinkl-
ed., "Just as good a time as to -day,"
And then came a s.eiles of swift int
pressions—sleigh drives with laughing
young people comfortably muffledin
rugs; corn roasts; sing -songs in the
living rooan of a pleasant farm house;
horse and buggy jaunts when the
grass was turning green in the Aprii
sunshine; huge family dinners with
the roast done to a fine turn. Motor-
cars, tee dances, all the paraphernalia
of modern youth. Different! But the
old days had definite charm, both Mr.
and Mrs. Thomson believe. The old
days—and Mr. and Mrs. Thomson
smiled at one another reminficently.
There are five children, Clara, Mrs.
A. J. Hardman of New York, Mrs.
Allan A. Saunders, Mrs. R. Rice end a
son, Lorne, wishing their father and
mother happiness to -day, And thirteen
•grandchildren, eight of whom will be
present at the family dinner, will join
with their parents in good wishes.
Mrs. Thomson was born in Usborne
township in Huron County. Mr.
Thomson is a native of Buckhaven,
Fifeahire, Scotland. Although Mr. and
Mrs. George Brown are not ebae to
leave Hensall for the reception, Rev.
S. J. Allin, the minister who perform-
ed the marriage ceremony, will be pre-
sent and Mrs. Allin will also attend.
