Stevens was stricken with pneumonia
on 'Friday last, •and was taken to a
hospital, where she passed peacefully

Dykes;, After finishing her education,
she went to Toronto to take a posi-
tion. -.Besides' her bereaved husband,
she leaves to mourn her loss, two
young sons Dewy and 'Charlie; her
grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam
Reichert and an uncle, Nelson 'Reich -
art, of Hensall. The funeral was held
on 'Friday afternoon from her late
•, home, and the remains were interred
{ in 'Toronto.
The public school held a skating
arty on the rink on 'Friday evening
last, with a lenge crowd attending.
After a few hours' skating a dainty
lunch was served.
Mrs. E. Jackson visited for a few
tidays with relatives in 'Clinton.u
The Zurich Lodge of Masons held
a banquet and concert in the Town
Hall on 'Wednesday evening. The
entertainers for the evening were 'Miss
Pearl Newton, elocutionist, and Miss
Edith Grainger, contralto, who gave
an excellent entertainment, besides
other local numbers. The Avondale
orchestra, of Lucan, °ave a number of

in dancing till the early hours of the
morning.
The services in the United Church
on Sunday last were largely attend-
ed, the church 'being filled to capacity
both morning and evening,. The 'Wo-
men's choir, consisting of over thirty
voices, rendered excellent music for
the occasion. Mrs. (Dr.) Reid, of To-
ronto, sang solos at both services and
these were greatly enjoyed by the
large coneregations present. At the
evening service, Rev. Mr. Sinclair
spoke on "A Young 'Woman's 'Woo-
ing, or a Bride's Destiny." Next Sun-
day evening the subiect will be
"Copyists, Imitators, Mimics."
Mr. Roy Todd visited over .the
week -end with friends in Exeter.

er -ill -law, h'Ir. Fred Perry, in Clinton,on Monday.
Mrs, D. McNaughton is visiting 'for
a few days with relatives in Exeter,
Mr. R. E. Pickard, of Exeter, was

William Johnston celebrated his
seventy-sixth birthday on Monday,
the 13th, and is still active and healthy.
He and Mrs. Johnston have been re-
siding here for the past three years,
coining from Goderich,
Tuesday, February 14th, was the
fiftieth anniversary of the marriage of
Mr. and Mrs. John W. Tippet. At the
Methodist parsonage, Feb. 14th, 1878,
Miss Isabella Higgins became the
bride of Mr. John Tippet being at-
tended by Mr. George Haacke` and
Miss Jane Higgins. Rev. J. A. Bro-
ley performed the marriage ceremony.
Three'members of the family are liv-
ing, Mrs, Wm. Mustard,,, at Florida
for the winter,. Mrs. Dymond of De-
troit, William of !Billings, Montana.
Mr. and Mrs. Tippet did not celebrate
'their golden, wedding, but spent the
day.

The hot supper and entertainment
under the auspices of Trinity Church
Thursday
evening,9th,was a splen-
did success. The super was all that
could be desired and was served in the
town hall basement. The program
consisted of recitations by Lorna
Westlake and Jean Dunn, songs by
Chrley and Maudie Parker. Several
fine selections by the orchestra, violin
duet, Arthur Peck and Dr. A. Newtofl
Brady, piano duet by Mrs. Paull and
Miss Ploy Edwards; dialogue by Har-
old McLeod and Mary Widcombe,
and a splendid play, Miss Doulton's
Orchids, the various parts being taken
well by Messrs. A. 'Dunn, H. Baker,
and Fred Heard and Mfsses Lucy
Woods, 'Susie Westlake and Annie
McLeod.
On Friday evening a ten -cent tea
was served; The total proceeds were

Word was received ir, town on
Monday evening of the death of
Henry Sheffer, at Kippen. Mr. +Shef-
fer was one of the oldest men in this
district, and had many friends in
town, who were sorry to hear of his
death.
The condition of Mr, John 'Cald-
well, who is lying seriously ill at his
home east of Hensailr-shows no im-
provement.
Special re -opening services will be
held in Carmel Presbyterian Church
on Sunday next, Rev. Mr. Mcliroy
will occupy his own pulpit, at +both
morning and evening services, and
special music will be given by the
choir. The church has been nicely
painted and decorated.
A pie social will be held in the
basement of 'Carmel Presbyterian
Church on Wednesday evening, Feb.
22nd, and a good 'programme will be
given, end lunch will be served after-
wards.
Mr. and Mrs, 'Gordon Appleton and
Mrs, Ernest Appleton, of Exeter,
visited over the week -end with Mr.
and Mrs. Thomas Appleton.
The services in Carmel Presbyter -

day evening was well attended. A
good programme was given and Mr.
James Watt acted as the chairman,
owing to the absence of Rev, Mr.
Abery, At the close of the pro-
gramme Miss ,Amy Parsons put on a
contest which was interesting, after
which several sorts of games were
taken part in. Towards the close of
the evening lunch was served, after
which a circle was formed and all
sang "'Should Auld Acquaintances be
Forgot," and God Save the King. All
went home feeling that they had en-
joyed a real good evening. Notice
will be given "when and where" the
next social evening will be held.

Icing, predeceased her three years ago
in Seattle, and another daughter, Mrs.

Two sisters also remain: Mrs. Mary
Amt Sherritt, Portage La Prairie and
Mrs. Sarah Smith, Delhi, California.
Mrs. Jarrott leaves 31 grandchildren.

ment was given on Tuesday morn-
ing by Iris Honor judge Lewis at
Goderich in the case of OwettGeiger
against Reeve Robert 'Higgins at
Hensall, where Owen Geiger endeav-
ored to unseat Reeve ,Higgins, on the
grounds that he was a county 'auditor
at the time a his nomination. The
Judge directed that the seat be vacat-
ed, each party to pay their own costs.

years conducted the Kippen hotel,
The funeral took place on 'Wednes-
day afternoon to Maitlandbank cern-
etery, Seaforth; the service being con-
ducted by Rev.' R. R. 'Conner of Kip -
pen. The late Mr. Shaeffer was ;born
93 years ago in'"Waterloo county. He
carte to Zurich while a young man,
where he married Miss 'Dsechert, who
predeceasd him 15 years ago. He is
survived by one daughter, Mrs. Wil-
liam Watson, of Seaforth, The late
Mrs. James +Dick of Seaforth was also
a daughter. The late Mr. Shaeffer
will be much missed in the community.

Prior to 'her marriage she was Miss
Agnes Jamieson, daughter of the late
Thomas and Mrs. Jamieson. It is 86
years and five months slice she was
born at New +Glasgow, near Quebec
City. When the. deceased was quite
young, the family left Quebec' prov-
ince and came to Ontario, settling on
the 'Parr line in Hay township. In
1859 she was married to Mr. Jarrott
who lived in Vaughan township, near
Toronto. ':Mr, and' Mrs, Jarrott pur-
chased a farm on the •Parr line in
Stanley township, and resided there
for a number, of years, before they re-
turned, to Hay,, And lived on the Lon-
don road. for nine years, They later
retired to Exeter where Mr, Jarrott's
death occurred seven years: ago. Mrs.
Jarrott catne to this neighborhood to
live near her children, Her amiable
disposition and remarkable qualities

Mr, Wm. Knox had his stable mov-
edfrom the village to his grass farm
one day last week, which he recently
purchased from Mr. D. Millson.
On Monday of this week the 'boys
putt on a big rabbit drive in which all
the'nimrods of the 'country and some
from Seaforth took part. They cov-
ered all the territory between Kinburn
and Winthrop ,for two blocks wide.
It made a very exciting and lively af-
ternoon of sport. Some of the rabbits
took a lot of killing, from ten to fif-
teen shots,' and then some made their
escape through! the lines. However,
in the neighborhood of fifty jacks
were 'bagged and the boys had a good
days' sport. 'Perhaps 'another drive
will be made in the near future, While
the walking is ,good and the ammuni-
tion hangs out.
