I' k new warden -elect was escorted to h seat by Mr. McQuaid and was swo in by ex -Warden Klopp, who co gratulated him'on his election to th office, Mr. Hayes made his opening r marks brief, saying it was better get dowp to business .firse, so that the end of the term the eouncillo would be able to say that they he !done their duty to their constituent 'and to,the county as a whole, H was gratified at being accorded th honor of being warden, but the pos tion brought' responsibilities' and was' a much more difficult matter t manage the county now than it use to be, as expenses were much higher especially for education, the adminis tration of justice and good roads• Mr. Hayes expressed the idea that if the members of the council mixed, up instead of dividing into two groups along political lines it would be bet- ter, and make for sociability. He closed by expressing the hope that the council` would be prompt in con- vening at the hour named, so that the ]Business might be done in good time• The members of the council were all present with the exception of Mr, Johnston, of W. 'Wawanosh,'who is. kept at home suffering with sciatica, and a resolution expressing sympathy with hint was passed, together with the decision' to put him on •the pay sheet for the session: The auditors presented the follow- ing statement of the finances of the county, from which it will be noted that there was a deficit of receipts below expenditures for the year of $17,215,77, .with however, county rates unpaid at the end of the year of` -over that amount, The report also ,com- mented on the change in the office of county treasurer' and congratulated.
