was reported to have been 20 degrees

low. Two reliable thermometers at
the Collegiate Institute registered the
fewest, temperature as 14 below.

especially for education, the adminis
tration of justice and good roads•
Mr. Hayes expressed the idea that if
the members of the council mixed, up
instead of dividing into two groups
along political lines it would be bet-
ter, and make for sociability. He
closed by expressing the hope that
the council` would be prompt in con-
vening at the hour named, so that the
]Business might be done in good time•
The members of the council were
all present with the exception of Mr,
Johnston, of W. 'Wawanosh,'who is.
kept at home suffering with sciatica,
and a resolution expressing sympathy
with hint was passed, together with
the decision' to put him on •the pay
sheet for the session:
The auditors presented the follow-
ing statement of the finances of the
county, from which it will be noted
that there was a deficit of receipts
below expenditures for the year of
$17,215,77, .with however, county rates
unpaid at the end of the year of` -over
that amount, The report also ,com-
mented on the change in the office of
county treasurer' and congratulated.
Mr. Gordon Young, the new .treas-
urer, also,' making a feeling reference
to the services the council had had for
so many years from Mr. Lane, first as
county clerk and more recently ats
county measurer, He had come to
be recognized as a leader in county
matters,

In connection with the count, andi-
tors' financial report Mr; Lane gave

the county's share of the cost of the
work done on the Provincial Highway
in '1926 was not due until Sept., 1927,
and arrangements had been made
with the 'Province to carry this in th

A statement of the expenditures in
I927 on the Huron rd. between Gode-
rich and Clinton 'was submitted show-
ing $47,638,50 for construction and
$1,761,36 for maintenance as the. 20
per cent. of total cost payable by the
county, The total,expenditure on the
road for 1927 was $2380192,49 for con-
struction and $8,806.79 for mainten-
ance, The expenditure on construe-'
tion of Huron road pavement in 1926,1
together with interest, amounted to
$3'1,726,10 as the county's .: 20 per 1
cent„ making a total debt, . 'by the
county to the. Province of $81,125,96,
Simcoe County is seeking the co-
operation of. Huron -county in peti-
tioaiing the Legislature to change the
open season for the hunting and tak-
ing of deer from 30 days to 15 days.
